Upload patrol[edit]

Hi Hoo man, As posted in the Village pump I've created a tool enabling us to mark uploads as patrolled systematically with ability to cut out timeframes with From: and Until: stamps, and ability to Hide already patrolled uploads. I noticed you were previously active or interested in this and invite you to install the userscript and continue this way. See also COM:RUP. If not already request patroller right and confirm your Wikimedia account with the Toolserver as this is required. Feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback on my talk page, in the Village pump post or report bugs on the Tools feedback pageKrinkletalk 16:49, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

IRC/CentralNotice[edit]

You're on the POTY committee and an admin on Meta. Could you come to IRC sometime so we could discuss a global notice? Thanks, theMONO 03:54, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Once again. theMONO 01:16, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hoo man. If you would like to receive the 'image-reviewer' flag, you need to file a request at Commons:License review/requests. You are receiving this notice because the right has been removed from your account after being added prior to. Thanks! --ZooFari 15:00, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

COM:FR[edit]

Hi Hoo man,

Thanks for helping with file renames.

Please read COM:FR before doing renames. Point 2 at What files should be renamed? is meant for camera generated names and should not be used to change file names from one language to another (point 2 at What files should not be renamed? ([1]).

Cheers. --  Docu  at 04:41, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You mean File:DSC duerrensee02.JPG (and the other file with a similar name), don't you? I know COM:FR and thought it would be better to move those images because of the DSC in them and the new title seemed to give way more information. After all, that for sure is a border case cause the old name already included the lakes name - Hoo man (talk) 12:36, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

File:Canadair CL-415 en vol.jpg[edit]

Are you sure the image is for CL 415 ? I declined renaming because the description gives diff. story. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 11:01, 23 May 2012 (UTC).[reply]

Oh, didn't see you declined the request (as I only moved about a minute after that), on that I fully trusted in the user who proposed the renaming, as he seems to be trusty and to know what he's doing... you might want to message him instead - Hoo man (talk) 11:06, 23 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some baklava for you![edit]

Thank you for renaming files of KV 504! Akaniji (talk) 01:13, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome :) - Hoo man (talk) 01:01, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a typo. It's called The Kissing Cocks because they resemble two roosters kissing. "The Kissing Rocks" is a tourist euphemism. - Gilgameshkun (talk) 14:40, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I did some additional research on the internet and both names seem possible to me. After all I think we can keep this name as it's widely used. Feel free to move it or change the description according to your wishes though. I'm sorry for the confusion caused but it's hard to find a reliable source for this. - Hoo man (talk) 09:02, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. To be honest, there seems to be a very slow-motion revert war at Ha Long Bay, which may explain why "Kissing Cocks" did not appear at the article sometimes when checked (but appears in its edit history). "Kissing Cocks" seems to be very offensive to some people (with "Kissing Roosters" being no less so), which is probably why "Kissing Rocks" became such a common alternative name in the first place. But one can see how they do resemble two roosters, with the vegetation on top resembling rooster combs. You don't mind if I restore the categorization for same-sex kissing that was here before? - Gilgameshkun (talk) 09:35, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

The Holder of the wiki barnstar[edit]

Thanks for taking User:CommonsDelinker on your shoulders, taking some weight off two other earlier giants of Commons, Siebrand and multichill! I hereby award you the Holder of the wiki barnstar.
With such a master, we can be confident it will prosper for many more years, even in its new location on Wikimedia Labs. --Nemo 14:04, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As this finally worked out now... thanks :) - Hoo man (talk) 21:00, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Technical Barnstar
The Technical Barnstar is awarded to anyone who has enhanced Wikimedia Commons through their technical work (programming, bot building, link repair, etc.).

This barnstar is supposed to be an appreciation of your hard work (Moving CommonsDelinker to labs, etc.).  :-) -- Steinsplitter (talk) 21:23, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not edit the MediaWiki: namespace on Commons in your capacity as a Wikimedia steward. There are over 250 local administrators whom you can ask for help if you need to change anything in that namespace. Thank you! odder (talk) 13:43, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I personally don't think that we need something like that for purely technical changes with no effect on end users (until you consider fixing JavaScript errors an effect on users). I will keep my hands of commons in the future, though. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 13:56, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Odder: See also Special:Contributions/Krenair. I think fixing uncontroversal JavaScript errors is allowed? :) --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:29, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoo: Oh, don't you get upset! What I meant is that Commons lies outside of the global mandate of stewards. We have enough admins to be able to deal with all sorts of interface chances on our own. Your contributions here are appreciated, just please try to use existing community processes to edit MediaWiki: pages. (Pinging an admin with Echo notifications or dropping a short line on the IRC channel #wikimedia-commons usually work fine.) odder (talk) 14:41, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder[edit]

Hi Hoo man. I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request. When you want to delete a page by manually using the {{Delete}} template, please remember to follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion, otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:23, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. It took me a bit to find out what you mean (I made quite some deletion requests recently), and it seems I confused {{Delete}} with {{Speedydelete}} when proposing a user page for speedy deletion. I'll be more careful next time. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 08:20, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that one. Sorry for the lack of direction. If you still feel the old edits to that page should be hidden in the spirit of DENY, I would support that decision, but we would have to get an Admin involved.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:05, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Usually I consider deletion the nicer solution for promotional pages, from accounts with very little history in a project, but I don't think this is worth re-visiting. --Hoo man (talk) 11:19, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

CommonsVandalism.php[edit]

Hi! In this edit, ToadetteEdit removed the link to your tool CommonsVandalism.php. I tried to find any background information on the tool before marking the page for translation. However, https://hoo.toolforge.org/ gives 403, the PHP file itself gives 404 (as stated in the edit summary), and https://toolsadmin.wikimedia.org/tools/id/hoo contains no data. Is the tool available somewhere? Is it at least open-source so that it can be resurrected by someone else in the future? —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:13, 23 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tacsipacsi: I sadly don't seem to have this around any longer (maybe in some old backup somewhere, but I wasn't able to find it after some casual searching). Anyway, as far as I can remember this tool was awfully simple: It basically just displayed all edits from the recentchanges table that were done by an IP, not yet patrolled, and had an edit summary that indicated that the file description was changed. While it definitely wouldn't be hard to re-built such a tool now, I don't think it would provide much value these days. Cheers, Hoo man (talk) 11:40, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
