Nikon in Thailand

[edit]

Dear Hdamm, I saw that you have removed Category:Products of Thailand from several Nikon camera models as being "inapplicable". Seeing that these cameras (D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D200, D300, D300s, D3000, D5000 [possibly also the D3100 and the soon to be announced D7000] and several lenses too) are made at Nikon's production facility in Ayutthaya (if I am correct, this is Nikon's largest production facility in the world), what category would, in your view, be applicable? Perhaps a Category:Made in Thailand or Category:Industry in Thailand analogous to Category:Industry in Germany? I think having such a category would help someone in writing a future article about Thailand's industrial output, which, if I am correct, generates more income for Thailand than for instance tourism which features very prominently in Wikimedia. I am also thinking of cars and motorbikes by for instance Honda, Yamaha, Toyota, Mitsubishi and many more, all of which are companies which have huge production facilities in Thailand. - Takeaway (talk) 09:58, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Takeaway. I removed that category because I had the inpression, that it would suggest, all Nicon cameras were exclusivly produced in Thailand. Which I could not imagine. In my opinion the Products of Thailand category should be reserved for genuine Thai products like - well - Thai silk or Singha Beer. Whereas Nikon is for me something typical Japanese, no? In the age of globalisation you could literally put millions of products into this category.
On the other hand I would second your suggestion of a new category. Maybe something like Category:Made in Thailand, "Made in Germany" is actally a seal of quality here in G ;-). "Industry in Thaland" could also be ok, but in my eyes is too specific. --hdamm (talk) 12:58, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Hdamm, I am actually gravitating towards Category:Industry in Thailand because it is specific. That way you won't see things categorised double, or even worse, people not knowing if something should be categorised in "Products of Thailand" or in "Made in Thailand". Also, "Industry in Thailand" itself can then be categorised in to Category:Industry by country. "Made in Thailand" would be very difficult to categorise as there is no such category as "Made in by country" for instance. For instance, Category:Made in Germany hardly contains any media at all, and it is categorised under "Products of Germany" which, in the case of Thailand, we are trying to avoid.
I can also imagine "Industrial products of Thailand" as a subcategory of "Industry of Thailand" in which the Nikon cameras and the cars I mentioned earlier can be categorised. "Industrial products of Thailand" can actually be categorised in both "Industry of Thailand" and "Products of Thailand" without there being any chance that people might be confused with Thai silk or Singha Beer. - Takeaway (talk) 12:49, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I can see your point and I agree with it. --hdamm (talk) 13:39, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okidoki! I started the Category:Industry in Thailand and put all the Nikon 'made in Thailand' cameras in there. I don't know much about cars and trucks so I hope that someone else will sort those out. Cheers! - Takeaway (talk) 06:26, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
