- @Elcobbola You block bots here before they even edit? See the userpage. We don't need to query Commons anyway, but a bit disappointed to see such a hasty block on a legit account that expressly won't make any edits. (Blocking also prevents our API access, in case you didn't know) — MusikAnimal talk 19:48, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
- I am disappointed to see the condescending snark in response to a legitimate block. Per COM:BP, "Bot accounts not authorized by the Commons community are not allowed to operate on Wikimedia Commons" and per COM:IU: "Usernames that are inappropriate for editing on Wikimedia Commons may be blocked. These names include [...] Misleading usernames that may give the impression that the account has authority it does not have. Usernames should not contain the terms [..] 'bot'" (underline added) If there is a period unapproved bots "that expressly won't make any edits" should be allowed to be exempt from our policies ("such a hasty block"), by all means provide it and I will adjust accordingly. - @Elcobbola Apologies, I didn't mean to have a snarky response. I'm not used to Commons and this sort of block on many projects is hasty. I would have guessed you read the user page, understood who and what you're dealing with, and realized blocking is accomplishing nothing but damaging the bot's SUL status as if we've done something wrong here. Not a single API request was even made to Commons (other than account creation), and there isn't going to be (this bot exists here only because I used meta:User:Krinkle/Tools/Global SUL to auto-create an account across all wikis). How would you know if an unapproved bot is running anyway? The API is open… there are bots running all the time without an account, much less community approval. Anyway, rules are rules :) Sorry for questioning you.
- I've no particular interest in getting the bot unblocked because we don't query Commons at the moment. WikiWho will never preprocess Commons pages since they aren't considered "content", but we may allow arbitrary use of the tool on any wiki/namespace in the future. It is possible someone would want to use it here, in which case the block will be problem, but that's many moons away. I cringe at the idea of seeking approval for something I can do without an account, but I digress :)
- Have a nice weekend, — MusikAnimal talk 20:32, 28 April 2023 (UTC)
