First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons:License questions.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

"Geograph images" with higher resolution than on Geograph[edit]

Hello. I've noticed that (some years ago) you've uploaded several pictures to Commons that are tagged as coming from Geograph Britain and Ireland, but that are in much higher resolutions than Geograph has. This is a bit of a problem for two reasons. First, it means that the claimed "source" is inaccurate: these files aren't available on Geograph. More importantly, Commons licensing policy says that we don't assume that a licence for a low-resolution version of a picture also applies to a high-resolution version. This means that we don't have any evidence of the CC BY-SA 2.0 licence claimed for the high-resolution versions of these pictures.

I've found the following files affected by this:

There are a few possible ways to correct this this. Probably the best would be for the contributor of these pictures on Geograph to upload the higher-resolution versions to Geograph (via the "Upload a larger version" link on the image page). That way all the information on Commons would be correct and Geograph's pictures would be improved as well. The alternative would be to update the file descriptions on Commons to accurately indicate where the files came from. For instance, if you took the photos yourself you could put {{Own}} in the "source" field and ideally replace {{Geograph}} with {{Cc-by-sa-2.0}} and {{Also geograph}}. A final approach would be to downgrade the pictures to the versions that we do have good sources for, but obviously I'd like to avoid that if possible. --bjh21 (talk) 22:55, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
