Hello Unravel17,

I have seen that you have uploaded a derivative map of File:China 1820 zh-hant.svg with the comment "...The original map contain a mixture of Traditional and Simplified Chinese." Could you please tell me which text elements in File:China 1820 zh-hant.svg need to be corrected, i.e., changed from simpified to traditional? I will then upload a corrected map.
I also uploaded a simplified Chinese version (File:China 1820 zh-hans.svg). Could you please have a look at it if it also needs any corrections in this respect? Greetings --Furfur ^{⁂ Diskussion} 13:13, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

To me, I am a Simplified Chinese user, so I wouldn't be annoyed, yet using Traditional Chinese mixed with Simplified Chinese characters could be offensive for some Traditional Chinese users. So I do believe that it needs some correction.

I just checked Simplified Chinese version, the characters are also mixed. In Simplified Chinese version in some part of Outer Mongolia, you use both "圖" and "图", but "圖" is actually a traditional from of "图" that you forgot to remove from the original Traditional version. And you should use “谢” instead of “謝”, "颜" instead of "顏", "库伦" instead of "庫倫", "归化城" instead of "歸化城"

In the traditional Chinese version, in Guangdong/Canton, somewhere near nowadays Hong Kong, you should use “廣東” instead of “廣东”(a misuse of 东/東). You should “直隸” instead of “直隶”, "1758之後承襲自准噶爾汗國的清朝與中亞各政權邊界" instead of "1758之后承袭自准噶尔汗国的清朝与中亚各政权边", "山東" instead of "山东"(another misuse of 东/東).I don't see any further mistakes you make, but actually there could be more. Yet, I am not writing in Traditional Chinese, so I am not so that professional.

For me, much of this kind of translation is done by my computer. It's like when you are typing in Simplified Chinese, and then you use the same input but typing Traditional Chinese. But if you are not typing a sentence or a phrase but a single character, it could be less accurate.

Hello Uravel17, thank you for your explanations. I will correct the two maps. These maps should be as accurate as possible, so please tell me if you find any more errors in them. 1. I can type the traditional characters with the same input method, e.g. Pinyin that I use to type Simplified Chinese. Most traditional characters and simplified characters are one-on-one relationship. So this can solve most problems in such conversion.
2. If you use Chinese in MacOS (like my MacBook Pro bought in China), when you right click a selected sentence, and then move on to Services, you will probably see an option named "Convert text to Simplified Chinese" and another option named "Convert text to Traditional Chinese", which is also helpful to the translation.
3. In Chinese Wikipdia, there is a table for conversion between traditional characters and simplified charaters, which may help the translation. But I am not an expert in doing this.

But the problem is that sometimes, more than one traditional character is simplified into one simplified character, so if you translate Simplified Chinese back to Traditional Chinese, it could be less accurate. So, as a Simplified Chinese user, I will research about these problematic characters if I see some. But I think most Traditional Chinese users understand more what is a good writing of Traditional Chinese than I do. So, maybe a check from Traditional Chinese user is needed.--Unravel17 (talk) 09:18, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

@Furfur: Sorry, but I still noticed some more misused characters that I didn't find at first.

In Simplified Chinese version, in somewhere in Outer Mongolia, you should use "扎萨克图汗部" instead of "扎薩克图汗部", in which "萨/薩" is misused. Also, you should use "三音诺言汗部" instead of "三音諾言汗部", in which "诺/諾" is misused.

In Traditional Chinese version:

1. The capital city of “山東” should be "濟南" instead of "济南", which is a peninsula close to but not bordering Korea in land.
2. The Capital City of "安徽" is “安慶” instead of "安庆", which is an inland province in East China, close to "江蘇" and "浙江".
3. "貴州" is a province in Southwest China whose provincial capital is "貴陽". The province is surrounded by four provinces of "雲南", “四川”, "湖南" and "廣西". So, you should use "貴陽" instead of "贵阳" when referring to the capital and "貴州" instead of "贵州" when referring to the province.
4. The capital city of "湖南" is "長沙" instead of "长沙", which is to the east of "貴州".
5. The province of "陝西" shouldn't be "陕西", although 陕/陝 is technically the same character. "陕" is not regarded as the standard form of "陕/陝" in Traditional Chinese, although Traditional Chinese users might write "陕" in everyday life.
6. The capital city of Tibet should be "拉薩" instead of "拉萨".
7. To the north of Tibet, you can see a standalone "图". I don't get the point why this character is there and it is a simplified character! The traditional form should be "圖"!

I checked Chinese Wikipedia, the province in the peninsula to the north of "山東" and bordering Korea should be "盛京將軍轄地", because "盛京" is not the name of the province, but where the local ruler was. "盛京將軍轄區" means places ruled by the general guarding in the city of "盛京". But the province was not given a name until 1907. Since 1907, the province was called "奉天" and the capital shared the same name in Chinese but remain its Manchu name as Mukden. Also, “吉林” should be "吉林將軍轄區", which means places ruled by the general guarding in the city of Girin. The province wasn't named until 1907. Similarly, "黑龍江" should be "黑龍江將軍轄區", which means places ruled by the general guarding Heilongjiang, a river that cut across the province. --Unravel17 (talk) 11:20, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello Unravel17, these files are in the public domain, so please feel free to make error corrections. The only thing I would like to ask you is to preserve the general layout (colors, etc.), or at least discuss any intended changes (I am open for improvements), because I intend to create other historic maps of China and would like to use the same layout throughout. Ich have now uploaded new versions and hopefully corrected all the errors you mentioned.

If you think that 吉林 should be changed to 吉林將軍轄區 in the traditional map, shouldn't this also be done in the simplified map – 吉林将军辖区 ? And likewise 黑龍江 / 黑龍江將軍轄區 / 黑龙江将军辖区 and 盛京將軍轄地 / 盛京将军辖地 ? --Furfur ^{⁂ Diskussion} 12:20, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

I think yes. 吉林將軍轄區/吉林将军辖区, 黑龍江將軍轄區/黑龙江将军辖区 and 盛京將軍轄區/盛京将军辖区 should be used. 地/地 and 區/区 are both OK, but I think they should be consistent here. But "區/区" is right now used in the template that refers to the provinces of Qing in Chinese Wikipedia, so I will prefer "區/区". --Unravel17 (talk) 14:24, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
