Hey Llez, out of curiosity, where did you get the template for your eecent QIC nomination? I'm asking because you included a 2= at the end. If there is any documentation that still recommends that I'd like to fix it. --Dschwen (talk) 19:13, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Focus stacking

Du verlierst all die Feinheiten.

2) Blitzeinsatz ist fast ein NO GO.

Schau Dir einfach mal meine Bilderchen an.

Hallo Alchemist, warum ist Blitz ein NO GO?

Bien amicalement --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 15:54, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Melo broderipii

Dear Llez, there is a common misunderstanding about M. aethiopica and M. broderipii; both look alike, but M. broderipii can grow to 35-36 cm, whereas M. aethiopica stays below 25 cm. If you have a shell that is 23 cm plus, you can be quite certain it is M. broderipii. see also http://www.gastropods.com/5/Shell_5215.shtml and http://www.gastropods.com/8/Shell_148.shtml. The shell I have on photo, is quite an odd one. Still I believe it is a well known species. I haven't come across such a shell in encyclopedia, the 25 years I have collected them. I am busy unpacking the hundreds of species I have. Terrible those packing materials...I am digging like a mole down here. By the way, do you use a macro objective for a greater field depth (sharpness on backside of the shell)? Is the 60 or 100mm lens recommended? Or just the AV modus on the camera? Love your photos. Just got a good camera at my disposal, the EOS1000, much better than the fujipix8000 that can only do large shells. Great fun. Still I am not used to discussion pages...where and how to reach others...I hope this will do MerlinCharon (talk) 22:57, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Hello Llez, thank you for your reply. Why it is not a giant M. aethiopica? Well, it is possible, but...there are world size records, and it is only one in several thousands that can measure up to record size. What are the odds you stumble upon just that? Generally speaking, yes the apex of M. broderipii is quite high, usually. If a shell gets damaged, the snail repairs it but it can grow in a different direction, also when young. These become the so called 'freak shells'. Another possibility is that environmental factors can cause the shell to grow differently. The snail reacts and adapts to the environment and consequently the shell gets another shape, colour, size, or weight. Even when young the spines can already begin to spire upwards instead of downwards (while the rest of the shell stays the same). Or, with some species, grow even further downwards than normal and become 'fusiform'. So that is a reason for me as well. ++ searching the internet ++ Now it is about 25 minutes later, and I have seen more material at conchology.be, the site of Guido Poppe. I will use that site for reference in the future. I guess the last M. broderipii photograph (from Guido Poppe as well) on gastropods.com has been a mix up. Yes, I do believe it is Melo aethiopica...pity though it has two large chips at the posterior, and a hole drilled in the anterior to hang it on the wall...but it would be a monstrously large aethiopica...I will revert the change, if possible. I have found a good way to use the camera, manual is the answer, 1/200 sec., ISO low, and F between 10 and 14. Works great. A macro objective is still on my wish list...expensive stuff. Best regards, MerlinCharon (talk) 18:31, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

hello Llez, it is me again. It seems your shell on the photo IS Melo broderipii...great fun this...All the best MerlinCharon (talk) 18:46, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

I just read you other question, was it labelled as such...no, like I said, I have never come across such a shell before. I bought it from a private person, in his house, about 25 years ago. ~The man was not a big collector of shells, he only had a handful of commercial grade and very common shells, along with some stones and other gray stuff. I found this one interesting, and he told me it was from Indonesia (does the shell come from the Dutch colony back then?). but since then it remained an odd shell in my collection, because I was never able to find anything about it...until internet came and I decided to unpack and review it once more...quite an unbelievable story: only one shell somewhere in a village and bingo! that is also why I couldn't believe it MerlinCharon (talk) 19:18, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Magenta comment in QIC

Bonjour Llez.

I'm sorry, it could be much better understandable in english, but I don't know the good words (nor in german...)

Re Pleuroceras categories

Hi Llez, in regards to the Pleuroceras categories, could you visit and comment on the Species level categorization of extinct taxa thread at the Tree of Life wikiproject. Also when you do create categories it would be very helpful if you would fully complete them such has been done at Category:Pleuroceras by including the taxonavigation and wikispecies tamplates. Also a Paleobiology Database (for fossils) and/or World Register of Marine species for marine taxa link is preferred if the databases have an entry for the taxon. --Kevmin § 17:35, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Genus or not Genus

Bonsoir, I told Kewin I disagreed with this approach. I am fully aware of the problem and I agree entirely-made hunting synonyms, too many, that we find everywhere. But I especially hope that we can freely create the category that seems useful. If there is a problem we solve piecemeal. Anyway, even for the genus Homo is not complete consensus. It is the position I will try to defend. What do you think? Bien amicalement --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 18:38, 26 February 2011 (UTC)

Hi Llez, I just wanted to let you know that I updated and moved one of your images, the "Lithymnates" laurenti specimen, to the current binomial Archepseudophylla laurenti. The species was transferred from Lithymnetes to the newly erected genus Archepseudophylla by Nel, Prokop, & Ross (2008). It would be wonderful to have more extinct insect image loaded onto commons if you have access to specimens! You're right! I've done it. :)
I take this opportunity to tell you that I like your photographic work. My comment in your last nomination isn't a reproach, just an explanation of W.S. and Benh's comments. I know well that the shell is completely covered by tissue in many marine gastropods, but isn't the case of the majority of your FP of shells... Sometimes, I think really that your photos have more them place in the category "objects", as the skeletons (ex:file:Diceros bicornis MNHN.jpg), because the shell is actually solely an external bone!
Maybe, your work would be more appreciated! :)

Too black white rhino

Hello Llez.
Thanks for your message and your appreciated review (as always).
I understand what you mean, and you are not totally wrong (Clin).
When I began this masking job, I had the same idea.
(well, it is not so bad at high size...)
I don't know how you do, but for myself, my maskings are all "hand made", with GIMP.
Then it should be very boring to re-do all the work at the boundaries, with the small and detailed soft brushes.
Do you know a special tip to avoid this ?
It is a good occasion for me now to congratulate you another time for your great job with the shells or amonites.
It is absolutely not boring to me, even if I'm not a specialist.
Winter panoramas are sometimes boring too !! But spring is coming, and critters, bugs and flowers will be back soon... (Heeeelp!)
I like very much the marvels of the nature you show, and you (your pictures!) make me feel sometimes the (too) famous "wow" effect.
I agree with your general opinion about the encyclopedic "spirit" of Commons, even in the FPC page.
IMO, it must be a place for all contributions and contributors, even with different goals.
There is sometimes too much testosterone in reviews...

--Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 15:38, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Missing data in picture

Hi Llez,

Sorry I was away from FPC for short while. I'd like to justify the missing EXIF on my pictures of Invalides. It's a stitch as you may have guess, and at that time, the soft I use (Hugin) did not include them in the final panorama. Also, I used a rectilinear projection, and this usually stretch the details, as we're getting farther from the center of the image, hence some soft parts. I'll try to reshot this one day, and I'll take into account the reviews. Thanks (by the way, you should consider archiving some of the talks here, as the page takes quite some time to display ;) ). - Benh (talk) 17:08, 26 April 2011 (UTC)

Civility

Llez, I didn't appreciate your flaming post at Commons:Featured_picture_candidates#File:STS-134_EVA4_view_to_the_Russian_Orbital_Segment.jpg. I'm not a perfect human being, and if I nominate an image, it's because I trust other users at FAC to share with me what they find wrong with it, if they find anything at all. Several times, and certainly in this case, I'll enjoy an image so much that I'll completely overlook (if accidentally) any technical issues, and I appreciate it when others catch those for me. If I wasted your time, I apologize. But damn, I didn't realize I'd set some sort of standard expected of me! I'm just trying to appreciate photography, so take it down a notch, and oppose without being uncivil. Thanks. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 09:43, 13 June 2011 (UTC)
