Hello, Smallman12q!

Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content, Presidential Limousine, was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at educational media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. The expression “educational” is to be understood according to its broad meaning of “providing knowledge; instructional or informative”. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Randolph Caldecot files[edit]

Running a digital "correction" on a painting or old print almost never works. The problems caused here are clearly in evidence when one compares these two with the original. Amandajm (talk) 18:02, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

This is the sort of way these old pics appear.
All the colours are too intense, the faces are red, the blue is too blue, the details of the black engraved lines are lost. It doesn't represent the appearance of the original.
Ye...I've since figured that auto-equalize in GIMP is too intense...I've left the auto-white balance though...does it look better now?Smallman12q (talk) 18:17, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
I've also corrected File:Randolph Caldecott collection-page 0081-crop-balance-equalize.jpg.Smallman12q (talk) 18:27, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
That really is very much better! Thank you for doing that so promptly. The only problem with the white balance is that it often makes the page a colder, bluer white than the original paper would have been so that the whole overall effect is a bit as if it was printed on computer paper. The background should be just a little on the cream side.
Also, with the prints as they were originally used, in little books, the paper was sometimes quite buff. The engraver/printer would have adjusted his colour scheme to the coloured ground that it was going on. Amandajm (talk) 03:43, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Commons:Batch_uploading#Bible_Illustrations[edit]

Hi, appreciate your message. I run a bot (standard python one), and have all the files (i.e. 3.000 images) on my computer. Now, the question would be how do I batch-upload the images with the bot. After I looked around again, would you say that Commons:Tools#Python_Wikipedia_Bot would do the job? Bennylin (yes?)

Yes, the files are organized in folders, and yes, I'm a Windows user. Your help is greatly appreciated. Bennylin (yes?) 06:19, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Yep, the folder names are identical with the online version, as well as the file names. On my example file File:Bible Illustrations 01 Genesis 01 01 Sweet Publishing.jpg, I added "Bible Illustrations" as the search name, "Sweet Publishing" as the publisher, and use the full name of the book, "Genesis", instead of "Ge", and didn't use the "RG" part of the name. What do you think?
As for the description and categorization, it would be better if they're done at the same time, because I think it's doable if scripted right. For the description, let's go with the basic, something like "A Bible Illustration that illustrates Genesis 1", for example. And the categories are Category:Bible Illustrations by Sweet Media for all listing, and Category:Bible Illustrations by Sweet Media (book 01-Genesis) for detailed listing. Thanks. Bennylin (yes?) 08:21, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
So, how should I perform the test upload, should I upload using upload.py or by VBScript? If it is the latter, would you mind point me to the right direction? Bennylin (yes?) 08:24, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
OK. I've uploaded 10 test files. Meanwhile I've modified the code a little, mainly on the description and categorization (for example, not every category starts with "Book of" kinda thing). Should I reupload the code? Also, I've simplified the code, see File:Book of Revelation Chapter 1-1 (Bible Illustrations by Sweet Media).jpg. What do you think? Bennylin (yes?) 13:13, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Oh, and also about the script, although convenient (I don't need to install anything), but is there any way to make the process automatic. Right now step #11 is not working, so I open cmd screen and run the bot from there. It pops up a lot of "OK"s screen, and the process won't continue until I press OK every time it pops up. Thanks. Bennylin (yes?) 13:23, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi, it's done. I'm puzzled for a while that there was chapter 0, but apparently your code adding 1 for each chapter numbering.
Glad to see it went well. I don't believe I ever read a chapter 0 in the bible, so I assumed it was a mistake and bumped it up to 1. If there are chapter 0s in the bible...then I made a mistake in correcting them.Smallman12q (talk) 22:50, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
Re OTRS ticket
I've been in contact with people from DSMedia again. Hopefully they can get someone from Sweet Publishing to send the OTRS ticket soon.

Thanks for the help. It seems that your script is the easiest way so far to upload batch of pictures, I think it should be added to Commons:Tools (after the code is tweaked, of course) Bennylin (yes?) 11:13, 2 April 2012 (UTC)

I may add it in the future along with several other vbs scripts and a short tutorial. You can do quite a bit with VBScript and COM. VBScript's successor, Powershell requires that you learn assembler-like aliases making it newbie-unfriendly. My concern with sharing, however, is that variants may be used by en:script kiddies for spam.Smallman12q (talk) 22:50, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
I share your concern there.
One more thing, I just realized that the files that I uploaded are of smaller resolution. (See File:Book of Exodus Chapter 1-1 (Bible Illustrations by Sweet Media).jpg for example). I might have to redownload them and reupload them again. Ack! The good news is that the copyright will be cleared out soon. Bennylin (yes?) 10:05, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Scenic images?[edit]

Hi Smallman12q, I see you created categories like Category:Scenic images of Harney County, Oregon. Why didn't you just put the images in Category:Harney County, Oregon? Intersecting the source with a topic category is generally not a very good idea. Multichill (talk) 19:24, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

The images were batch uploaded as part of Commons:Bots/Requests/Smallbot 2. I created those categories to organize the images based on the county source. I should probably change those categories to a parameter to the license so the template will give a hidden cat Category:Images from Oregon Historical County Records Guide (Harney County, Oregon), and then add the original county category Category:Harney County, Oregon back to the images. Also, I have to tag a lot of the images with . If you think this is the right approach, or have any thoughts on this, let me know.Smallman12q (talk) 13:12, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

About hidden categories for images from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum[edit]

First of all, thanks for everything you've been doing for images from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum so far: it has been much appreciated! I spoke with Bdcousineau in person last night at our weekly Michigan Wikipedians meeting about the cooperation and, in the course of our discussion, I mentioned that the NARA images use an extensive hidden category structure parallel to the "mainspace" categories that they are also filed under. After looking around and finding Category:Media contributed by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum tonight and noticing that it is completely separate from categories such as Category:Artifacts at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum and Category:Photographs at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum, I'm curious about the possibility of transforming all of these categories into a single hidden hierarchy similar to what NARA uses and then add "mainspace" categories to them (again, just like the NARA images). I have some experience with this, but not much, so I wanted to ask you about it before I do anything. Thanks again for all your help with the project and take care! Michael Barera (talk) 01:36, 6 October 2012 (UTC)

Ye, that's fine. You can create a centralized hierarchy...that's what cats are supposed to do. You just need to categorize the categories=P.Smallman12q (talk) 22:31, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
Also, you're welcome to work on the template for the images...I'm not fully sure what should be included/excluded.Smallman12q (talk) 22:40, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
Alright, I'll go ahead and start working on it. Please feel free to correct any mistakes if I make them. Thanks again for all your help! Michael Barera (talk) 00:23, 7 October 2012 (UTC)

Quick suggestion about the PDF files you are preparing to upload[edit]

I've been talking with Bdcousineau and, after I mentioned something to her about the PDF uploads, she suggested I let you know before you get too far into the uploading process. Most of the PDFs (at least the ones redlinked to in her sandbox) start with the title "Vice President and" without naming who the "Vice President" is. While in the context of the Ford Library and Museum this is something obvious, it really isn't in the Wikiverse, so I suggested everything be systematically changed from "Vice President" to "Vice President Ford" before the uploads are made. This is something that can be done through filemoving after the upload, if worst comes to worst, but it would really be easier to do it first. Thanks so much for everything you've been doing and take care! You're awesome! Michael Barera (talk) 04:40, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Copyright question[edit]

Hi, just a quick FYI -- I believe this image is probably under copyright. I believe the State erroneously tagged it, as the attribution is for the photographer; but the painter's copyright is not addressed by their generic copyright notice. I think it's best if the file is deleted, unless there is more known about its authorship and copyright status. -Pete F (talk) 15:34, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for finding it. You're probably right. I've voted to delete.Smallman12q (talk) 23:42, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

I've sent an e-mail to the Kellogg Eye Center concerning the "The Eyes Have It" images and video[edit]

I've just contacted the Kellogg Eye Center by e-mail concerning the "The Eyes Have It" images and videos. I first tried to send an e-mail to the general "contact us" account (which failed to deliver twice), so I just sent it to the person listed under "photography" instead: I don't have any idea if he'll be able to help, but I gave it a shot (and I also used my umich.edu e-mail account, for whatever that's worth). Here is the text of the message that I sent:

To whomever it concerns,

My name is Michael Barera and I'm a student here at the University of Michigan as well as a member of the Michigan Wikipedians student club. One of my fellow Wikipedians (Smallman12q is his username) has noticed that you have a treasure trove of eye-related photos and videos that are freely licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (CC BY 3.0) license on your collection "The Eyes Have It". Because they are freely licensed under a CC license that is compatible with the licenses that Wikipedia uses, Smallman12q would like to upload them to Wikipedia. One thing that he noticed, however, is that each of the images has a Michigan logo as a watermark: Wikipedia discourages the use of watermarks on actual images on the project, so Smallman12q is curious if there would be any way to obtain these images and videos without the watermarks. On Wikipedia, we add extensive information and metadata to each image, so we will be sure to properly credit the Kellogg Eye Center as the creator and source of these images on each and every image/video page. If this is a request that you are unable to grant or even to consider, I will completely understand. If this is a request you are able to grant, Smallman12q is not picky about what format he would like to receive the images in: he suggested zip, but he is flexible. Thanks so much for your time and take care!

- Michael Barera

Hope that this helps. Michael Barera (talk) 03:17, 10 November 2012 (UTC)

Ford photo contact sheets[edit]

Hi Smallman12q. When you upload the Ford photo contact sheets (see this), is it possible to add additional text to the name? I've been thinking about this a lot and think Ford files should have more identifiers in the name in Wikipedia. For example, A5397_NLGRF[1] should be named Ford_A5397_NLGRF_photo_contact_sheet in Wikipedia. The "Ford" part will help tell humans not familiar with NLGRF what the file is about. By setting "Ford" first, the file will be sorted by that and it can be easily distinguished from, for example, Nixon_A5397_NLRMN_photo_contact_sheet. The "photo contact sheet" portion says what the file is. It is a little more descriptive than "contact sheet" and "photo contact sheet" is what is used by the Ford Library.[2]. As for the description, originally I was thinking the upload bot could put a copy of the text at File:Ford A5397 NLGRF photo contact sheet.jpg on each page and just modify the details. It might be better to have one template with the repeatable text details and have parameters for the template that can be changed for each page. I don't know how the upload bot works, so it's hard for me to say what we shoud do. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 11:58, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

The upload title will be "Ford <sheet id> (date)(Gerald Ford Library).jpg" The table in each file will be generate based on what's in the pdfs. I don't think an additional formatting template is needed. I'll create another licensing template which will read "The White House Photographic Office provided still-photographic coverage of the day-to-day activities of President Gerald R. Ford, First Lady Betty Ford, and their family and staff. The photographers took approximately 290,000 photos, all of which are in the public domain and not subject to copyright restrictions. " based on their site. If you have any other suggestions, let me know.Smallman12q (talk) 22:57, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
I prefer your version. I assume that you are getting the "<sheet id> (date)" from here. That's good. It turns out, the date on the contact sheet is not the date the photos were taken. A file name such as Ford A5397 (07/05/1975)(Gerald Ford Library).jpg is fine. In suggesting something like A5397_NLGRF, I thought it might contribute to helping the Ford archivists get on board with the Wikipedia project since that is how the Ford website identifies the file. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:28, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
It'll look like Ford A5397_NLGRF photo contact sheet (07-05-1975)(Gerald Ford Library).jpg (Can't use slashes / as they're not allowed in filenames...had a long bug report on that one bugzilla:41190) and it'll be based on that finding guide. The date isn't when they're taken...but its better than nothing.Smallman12q (talk) 23:49, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

new GFPLM-image[edit]

Hate to bother you over here, but it's like a crazy w:quilt on my user page right now. I need to communicate this to you:

In GFPLM-image this is the new verbiage for document uploads for ARC web-scrape only:

This media is housed at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum, available online at Ford Digital Library or through the holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration, under Archival Research Catalog (ARC) identifier xxxx.

The "xxxx" will be the ARC ID# and will have to change from file to file. Can this work?
In GFPLM-image this is the new verbiage for the contact sheet uploads - or any future upload without ARC ID #:

This media is housed at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum, available online at Ford Digital Library.

This verbiage replaces the current:

This media is available in the holdings of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.

I have two changes to the table headings (are you giving me tables for the documents?) once we get to the ARC-scrape and the Ford website-scrape. Thanks. And, no db for the contact sheets. The Photo Archivist said so. Bdcousineau (talk) 20:37, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Thoughts about categories for the Ford contact sheet uploads[edit]

My original thought was to categorize all of the Ford contact sheets by the photographer (thus creating subcategories both of "Contact sheets by the Ford White House" and "Photographs by [photographer's name]"), but I'm starting to wonder if the scale of this project will necessitate splitting up categories by years and even months (as a couple of your recent uploads have exhibited). I want to have a consistent categorization regime, no matter what form it takes: photographer, year/month, both, or something else. So, whatever option we go for, I'd like to agree on it so we can make sure all the images are categorized consistently as or shortly after they are uploaded. If we really get into the tens or hundreds of thousands of contact sheets, this consistency will be very useful. Thanks so much for all your help so far, and please do take care! Michael Barera (talk) 03:00, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

I've noticed that Smallbot is currently running, so hopefully you're on right now. I like your categorization idea to split up the contact sheet uploads by year and month, so I'm working on creating those categories (which were just redlinks when the uploads began) and making them subcategories of the main "Contact sheets by the Ford White House" category. I will then remove the redundant parent category from each of the images. If we decide we want to later, we can break up each of the months by photographer, but let's wait and see on that one. For now, I'm essentially going with your categorization structure minus the redundancies. (See here for my idea of the finished product). Michael Barera (talk) 02:32, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
OK, we have to stop uploading all of the contact sheets with categorical redundancies: this is creating too much unnecessary work. Smallman, if you don't mind, could you please stop Smallbot and remove the redundant "Contact sheets by the Ford White House" category (but please do leave the "by month" category)? (Again, see here for what the upload should look like). Also, please either create any "redlinked" categories that you add to the batch upload (following this example) or give them all to me so I can create them. Smallbot is just operating too quickly and this project is too large to do this all by hand, as I originally intended. Thanks in advance for fixing this problem. Michael Barera (talk) 03:16, 28 December 2012 (UTC)
I've removed "Contact sheets by the Ford White House" from all prior uploads with cat-a-lot and from future uploads in the script. You can create the redlinked categories, they're all in the template. Just click for new tab, paste, and save.Smallman12q (talk) 14:55, 28 December 2012 (UTC)

Curious about creating and operating a bot on Commons[edit]

This actually has nothing to do with the Ford collaboration, but I know that you run Smallbot and so you may be able to help with this query. I'm curious about creating and operating an internationalization/localization bot on Commons (something very similar to Slobot, which hasn't edited since 2010), but I have no previous experience with bots on Wikipedia or Commons. So, I'm coming to you for some advice on where to get started. I just learned basic Python last semester, so I'm most interested in running a pywikipedia-based bot, but I'm open to other suggestions as well. Please let me know where or whom I should go to next: I know from personal experience that there are a lot of files on Commons in need of internationalization/localization, so I'm really interested in getting a bot up and running that can help on this front. Thanks so much! Michael Barera (talk) 16:49, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Programming revolves around practice and understanding. You'll need to read mw:Manual:Pywikipediabot(and relevant links) and Overview_of_the_process_of_developing_a_bot. All the bot frameworks are wrappers for the mediawiki api. You don't need a degree to program (though it'll help get your foot in the door). Having said that, you should should write down exactly how you think the program should work, and then find the proper function in the pywiki framework. (In your case, you want to get the page text, search/replace, and then save). You should also look at the source for the scripts in the framework and make some practice edits with the framework. I don't know how proficient you are in python, but I would recommend getting a book or two on python, watching some python videos, and practice. You should also get an w:IDE such as w:pycharm.

If you're willing to go outside python, you could try the DotNetWikiBot Framework which is written in C# and would be easier for a beginner to use.

I also suggest you get a w:wp:Toolserver account (they'll need some personal details).

According to Python LocalUserGroups, their is a pyhton group in Michigan which meets at w:Washtenaw Community College. You can post to this active google group for more info (they have a meeting tmrw). You should also see if you have any programming student clubs. It's always a plus to take initiative=D. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.Smallman12q (talk) 03:56, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I really appreciate it! I'm not sure if now is the right time (in all honesty, it probably isn't because I don't have that much experience), but I would like to manage my own bot at some point. Thanks for sharing! Michael Barera (talk) 04:08, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Great job on the contact sheets[edit]

The contact sheet uploads look great. One idea I had was to also include the tables for each contact sheet on a single page so the page could be word searched and the table columns could be sorted. While the collective of the contact sheet tables would be a lot of data, I think if we put the table in a scrolling list, it could work. I created such a scrolling contact sheet table for two contact sheets at Category:Contact sheets by the Ford White House. If you think this would work, could you do your bot magic and add the tables for the other contact sheets to the scrolling table at Category:Contact sheets by the Ford White House. Thanks. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:13, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Dear Smallman12q, thanks' a lot for your message on my German talk page and of course for your support to upload these areal photos. I will first get in contact with the photographer and if he is able to speak English it is may the easies and best way if he get direct in contact with you. Question about GFPLM-image-full[edit]

Thanks so much for all your hard work on GFPLM-image-full: it really looks good so far! One thing I noticed, however, is that it is missing a documentation page (which should be located at , I believe), so it is difficult to know exactly what fields are supported by the template and what ones aren't. Looking at the general NARA version of that documentation (which is at ), the "usage" section seems to me to be absolutely vital to using the template effectively, while the "parameters" section also looks very nice, but it will require more work. Considering that you created the GFPLM-image-full template and thus have the most knowledge of exactly how it works, do you think that you would be able to create the documentation page? If not, I can give it a shot, but I was looking at all the template code and wasn't quite sure which parameters corresponded with fields and which ones were supporting other parameters. Thanks so much and take care! Michael Barera (talk) 04:20, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Category:Contact sheets by the Ford White House (October 1975)[edit]

Hi Smallman. I did not see any contact sheets in Category:Contact sheets by the Ford White House (October 1975), but found A6748_NLGRF.jpg, which is a contact sheet from Ocober 2, 1975. Although it is not linked on whpo1975.asp, is there a way to use the bot to get that contact sheet and others not linked on whpo1975.asp into Commons? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 12:52, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

I'll use http://www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/library/whphotos/whpodatelist.asp and see what wasn't uploaded. There are ~3000 files that weren't uploaded.
Thanks. You are doing a great job. It is frustrating[3] to have to wait on the decision process at the Ford Library and Museum and us volunteers could easily find other things to do. However, we both know that this is an important project (I posted about my views here). The head of NARA and the Ford Library and Museum both support this effort. I'm not sure why that is not translating down to some of the staff. Your efforts are essential to this transfer of material, so I'm hoping you hang in there. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:33, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Don't worry...not going anywhere...yet.Smallman12q (talk)

Count bot[edit]

Is there a way to have a bot update something like, "The total number of items contributed by the Ford Presidential Library and Museum to this category is xxxx." noted at Category:Media contributed by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum? (I think we should count each frame on the contact sheets as one item.) If not, feel free to undo my edit here. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 15:03, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

That's not necessary. The goal is to get all the digital content, and the museum has a tally of that=P.Smallman12q (talk) 16:40, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Interest in converting all Ford info templates to GFPLM-image-full[edit]

I spoke to an archivist at the Ford Library this morning, and he expressed a strong desire to convert all of the different info templates used on the Ford collaboration uploads to the new GFPLM-image-full (which he really seems to like). I don't know the best way to do such a conversion (ie, if we can do it by bot or if we have to do it by hand), so I thought that I'd ask you. If it isn't possible to do by bot, then I would certainly be willing to do it by hand, but with over 10,000 files already I'm worried that that will take a long time and may not be the best use of my time. It would be really, really nice to convert to GFPLM-image-full in the near future, no matter what way we do it. Thanks so much for all your help on the project and have a nice weekend! Michael Barera (talk) 18:43, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

This a simple bot task. I'd simply copy over the values for the old template to the new template. I'll do it sometime.Smallman12q (talk) 23:42, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I really appreciate it! Michael Barera (talk) 01:33, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
This task/request is important to the Archival Staff and will go far to help raise their comfort level. Please don't overlook that we will need to insert the ARC ID #'s into those files that need them. See below. I will ask the Archival Staff to provide the ARC ID #'s, so we don't have to go searching for them. In light of the recent articles about the WiR, and some amazing behind-the-scenes events, things may now go more smoothly.
I will handle inserting the ARC ID's into the photos I uploaded. Getting the ID's from DC will take a week or three. I can do GFPLM-image-full by hand as there's only a hundred or so.
The photos uploaded by NARA are exempt from this project (not sourced from the Ford Library).
The artifact photos are exempt from needing an ARC ID, but should get GFPLM-image-full. They are Category:Artifacts at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum
The contact sheets have no ARC ID's.
Perhaps start here? This category needs GFPLM-image-full and GFPLM-image-ARC: Category:Documents at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
This is a big help, thanks! I'll get those ARC ID's next week (we can't begin or complete their task/request without them). Bdcousineau (talk) 18:52, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

AELG photo's upload[edit]

Hi!, I'm very glad that you can realise this upload, only a note, no all the photos of the writers of the AELG can be uploaded , only have licence CC-BY-SA those that are of the photographers Eduardo Castro Bal and Santos-Díez. If, for example, you need a list of URLs of the galleries only of these photographers to facilitate your work, or something like this, warn me and I'll do it. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 14:14, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Great work!, thank you very much. I only have a note, the link to the photos in source don't work. Could you repair that or can't do it with the bot? Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 11:32, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Image rendering bug is being look into at w:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Images_not_rendering.Smallman12q (talk) 23:49, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
No, I talked about the link to the original source, if you see File:Marga do Val (AELG)-1.jpg, for example, the source link to the original photo is http://www.aelg.org/Centrodoc/DownloadAuthorPhoto.do?photoId=1645Direct, but that link gives an error, and I think that all the photos have the same problem. Could your bot fix that links?. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 08:56, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Oops. I'll run the bot to put a space between Direct and the actual link. Thanks for letting me know.Smallman12q (talk) 03:16, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Rendering issue has been fixed. I've also fixed the direct link issue.Smallman12q (talk) 04:40, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, great work! Another detail that I have found is that the link to the photo gallery, like this, aims to the general gallery of all the writers, can you do that this link aim to the gallery of the writer to which belongs the photo, like this? I think that it would help to locate the image in this web. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 00:05, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
I'll fix that later in the week.Smallman12q (talk) 00:26, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Tracking the WiR article stats[edit]

Hello! It's increasingly important to track the instances of the article about the WiR position as they appear and disappear. Would you be interested in doing this, or teaching me how? This story is still circulating, but mostly at the blog level.
There are several categories:

 • an estimated 5-9 main stories (i.e. New York Times, M.live.com, the Wikimedia blog, The Chronicle of Higher Ed, etc)
 • reposts of these main stories unaltered on aggregators and other news sites and fb pages (mostly the NYTimes piece)
 • blogs
 • tweets
 • AP story - this had a short shelf life - appearing and disappearing quickly on some news sites

I've been doing basic google searches using Ford Library Wikipedian to watch the story. I'd now like to save the instances of it. Currently I've cut/pasted/saved about 4 pages of urls across the categories. There must be a better way! Bdcousineau (talk) 09:50, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Personally, I use a proprietary real-time news feed for traders...but for normal folks google would suffice. Just limit the search time to past week/24 hours. You could also use a subscription database like w:NewsBank or w:Factiva. To prevent w:link rot, you could use on demand web archiving such as w:WebCite or w:Read It Later(don't know how well it still works) or simply take a screenshot of the url using a free browser extension for firefox/chrome. NARA is an archive institution, so you may have other tools you can use. There's also the social media folks who could do this. On a side note, wikt:grunt work is often given to interns=P. Hope this helps.Smallman12q (talk) 00:02, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Ford artifacts[edit]

I spoke with Jamie, and he agrees that the artifact images uploaded to the Ford website can live there as thumbs, while the full size versions can live on Commons. This makes sense in that over the last several months we’ve experienced a noticeable increase in people referencing Ford artifacts via Commons, NOT the Ford website. I will create a table for our images similar to User:Bdcousineau/sandbox7on the Ford website, and as the images make their way onto Commons, I will insert the Commons file url into our website table.

Have you seen this new function that auto-generates a Wikipedia link for every object? We would love to have something like this on the Ford website, but of course have no idea what/how/where to begin. If you have interest in developing/helping us to develop something like this, we are all ears!

It’s my understanding that in the next 24 months our current artifact website will be scraped and replaced by a TMS database (realistically that could mean 36 months) –seems like a perfect opportunity to insert that functionality. Bdcousineau (talk) 17:40, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

I should be able to auto-generate the table...we try to automate where we can. That function for autogenerating a wikipedia link is very easy to do...a few lines (~5) of JavaScript could do it. You take the current page url, stick it into a template, and attach the template to the html document which is rendered by the browser. 36 months...that's quite a timeline. I'm guessing you're aiming for something webbish, but not too webbish=P.Smallman12q (talk) 01:48, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Question about editing Images[edit]

Hi, I noticed you were able to change the name of one of the images I uploaded last week to better suit it's purpose. Thank you. Also, I'm currently trying to figure out how to do the same thing with another image I want to be more specific about. Could explain how to go about doing so? Thanks. Anmats 14:50 February, 4, 2013.

It's rather confusing for a new user, you should ask User:Michael Barera to do it, or list what you want moved (from and to). You could request file move rights at Commons:Requests_for_rights#Filemover. If its only for a few files, you could request the files be moved using Help:RenameLink. Go to the top of the screen->preferences->gadgets, under "Interface" make sure RenameLink is checked->scroll to bottom and click save. Now go to the file you want to move, at the top, right of the star, is a down arrow, move the cursor over the arrow and click move. Pick a reason to move and the a new filename. It'll be a while (5min-2days) before the file is moved so use the old filename until then. The old filename will be automatically replaced when the file is moved. Smallman12q (talk) 02:03, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your help and my apologies for not getting back to you sooner! Anmats (talk) 10:10, 6 February 2013
I'm a filemover and I'm happy to help. What are the files you would like to move, Anmats, and what would you like me to rename them to? (Please drop me a line on my talk page and I'll get to it as soon as I can: thanks!) Michael Barera (talk) 23:58, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Issue with this photo[edit]

I have come to realize that the US government uses a lot of clip art bought from stock photo places. This photo for example [4] thinkstock [5] Unfortunately I think Wikipedia / Commons has dozens of these. Thoughts? James Heilman, MD (talk) 08:56, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Beside tagging the images with Copyvio not much can be done. Smallman12q (talk) 01:57, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

thanks[edit]

Thank you very much for updating and Category:Documents at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum. Bdcousineau (talk) 17:32, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

next Ford Museum task[edit]

Hello and happy Monday. The next task, should you choose to accept it, is to insert to these two categories:

This is the second-to-last bit of adjusting the Ford Working Group is interested in seeing, before considering any future uploads. The Group will potentially meet again later this month to assess next moves. In the meantime, I am updating artifact file templates to Artwork, and counting snowflakes. Bdcousineau (talk) 16:03, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Hopefully your edit-a-thon went well (though I see no press-releases). The working group is making progress? I'll fix the template later this week...also only use GFPLM-image-ARC not the language one () directly otherwise it won't translate. There were quite a few snowflakes out here -.- Smallman12q (talk) 01:06, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Press release? "We don't need no stinkin' press release!" Bdcousineau (talk) 16:41, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
ps. I know there was a discussion about the |source parameter - I need to create a list of Commons file names matched with Ford web url's - the Ford Working Group wants the url to live in the |source field, in addition to having the ARC id # as a link.
Crap! this puts us back a week or so. Here is a start - User:Bdcousineau/sandbox8 is this useful? Bdcousineau (talk) 18:49, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I could also add in the source param...I'd prefer an excel spreadsheet with 3 columns: filename(not url...though I can convert url to filename with a w:one-liner program), url, url name (or if you want them all the same).Smallman12q (talk) 02:26, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok, will do, and send via .... email or ftp? Bdcousineau (talk) 14:00, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Email, ftp, or a link online from filehost(such as sendspace.com).Smallman12q (talk) 14:16, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
The first hundred to check format (highlighted files need name change in Commons - rename request going in today). xls here. I estimate I'll be done next Tues. It's about 4 hours per 100 incl. snacking/daydreaming - there's 300 of these. Sadly personal iPad will not support this at home (unless I can find app), and long weekend off coming up. Bdcousineau (talk) 17:26, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
-You can get filemover rights at Commons:Requests_for_rights#Filemover so you can move the file (it's not hard). I'd prefer the final file-name so I don't have to write redirect-aware logic. Let me know when you (or your intern) finish listing all the files. Smallman12q (talk) 23:20, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

final list here. No redirect-aware logic needed. There's only 200 - other category has complications to be worked out later. Thanks so much. After this, the 300 images that were missing ARC ID's. Almost all images now have ARC id's assigned by NARA. When that batch is ready, I'll send a sample xls to see if all the correct data is there. Have a great weekend! Bdcousineau (talk) 17:05, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Will do. You simply want it in the format: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum: H0010-2>? (I'm assuming it's all museum)Smallman12q (talk) 22:18, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
NO -! it's all LIBRARY, so please replace Museum with Library, then it's perfecto. So glad you mentioned that. Bdcousineau (talk) 00:53, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
My mistake. Will do: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library: H0010-2.Smallman12q (talk) 02:53, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Hello! Monday again, snow blindness abating. Any chance you have time to insert the updated GFPLM-image-ARC into Category:US National Archives series: Gerald and Betty Ford Historical Photographs, compiled 08/09/1974 - 01/20/1977, documenting the period 1884 - 1974? I uploaded via FTP the excel spreadsheet with the new source parameter links (last week).
Complication with this set Category:US National Archives series: Gerald R. Ford White House Photographs, compiled 08/09/1974 - 01/20/1977 - putting it off for now.
The other project-group of photos getting new ARC ID's - is stalled, the lady giving out the ARC ID's is on leave.
Really appreciate it. Also working with the Collections Dept. to get the new images ready for upload. No date on that yet, tho. Bdcousineau (talk) 15:04, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
I'll do it Wed/Thurs. Smallman12q (talk) 00:05, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
great! Bdcousineau (talk) 01:25, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Arc Id's[edit]

hello thanks for completing the last task! the spreadsheet with the new ARC ID's is located here

 • most of these files currently on Commons are low-res, I've included a high res zip file partial url - don't know if converting from low-res to hi-res is a separate task or not
 • Please add ARC ID into title as in - File:this is the title (12345).jpg
 • need the source parameter similar to last task: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library: H0010-2.
 • Like in the original NARA version of the template, the Arc ID # needs to be a link, however using the new language: This media is from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum [hyperlink to Ford Website], a part of the National Archives and Records Administration [hyperlink to Archives.gov]. It can be accessed online through the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) at identifier xyz [hyperlink to ARC url].
 • Got invited to speak at at the 2013 Assoc. of Midwest Museum Conference (Unintended Consequences, or It Takes a Village to Create a Wikimedia Project) hope to get permission. Also hope to bring Villager #2 (WiR) along to talk, too. You, as Villager # 1, are invited as well (I'm Villager #0). If you see fireworks above Michigan, the email request has been opened. Bdcousineau (talk) 18:20, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll do this this week. Though I've gotten a number of invites, I don't do conferences/w:unconferences/meetups related to the wiki...sorry. I intend to stay as just some guy on the 'net. Smallman12q (talk) 00:25, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
no worries! I'm looking for more ways to add value to my presence here, and it may actually be there, in the rl world. The Ford WiR model is doable on any campus - I have a date with a curator at UofM nxt week about this very idea. There's a database, too. Any interest in peonies? =) Bdcousineau (talk) 00:56, 9 March 2013 (UTC)
Sure. Why not.Smallman12q (talk) 12:56, 10 March 2013 (UTC)

Smallman12q (talk) 01:56, 25 March 2013 (UTC)

hmmm... crap! I can't see that the template has changed on this group. Am I looking in the correct place? I do see that the hi-res image has been uploaded - thanks! Bdcousineau (talk) 16:25, 28 March 2013 (UTC)
It appears properly for some files such as File:Gerald Ford Papers- Final Issues for Decision, Army Corps of Engineers- Panama Canal Treaty Negotiations (5)(Gerald Ford Library)(6283043).pdf where it reads: "This media is from the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum, a part of the National Archives and Records Administration. It can be accessed online through the Archival Research Catalog (ARC) at identifier 6283043." I'll have to see what's wrong with the other ones tmrw. Smallman12q (talk) 02:43, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
It seems the ones using GFPLM-image-ARC are fine. You can see a list at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:GFPLM-image-ARC. If that's not what you want, let me know. (I'll work out why others don't match up tmrw).Smallman12q (talk) 02:46, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
ok, great, thanks. It's the group of files that recently got ARC IDs assigned/that I uploaded that seem to be missing the full correct templating. The template is correct in everything Smallbot uploaded, and everything NARAbot uploaded. Perhaps there's something wonky in the "Upload Wizard" which is what I used. Today is Ford Working Group meeting, but if DPLA is everything I'm dreaming it is, it might be the last! The Smithsonian has also joined DPLA. Curious to know what the licensing will be. The Dev portal might be useful. Later, 'gator! Bdcousineau (talk) 10:50, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Could you list a few of the files that don't work? They need to be using GFPLM-image-full. I've looked at the various links at DPLA technical aspects. The Metadata Application Profile, you linked to is helpful...though it doesn't specify how the "source resource" itself is defined. They're using w:Resource Description Framework[6] which is good. There is some basic api functionality, but it's still being ironed out. There is a mailing list [7] so I'll give that a shot. Ideally, I'd like a sample: here's a link to the NARA image source resource itself and here's it's accompanying metadata. Still have to manually update those files from that excel sheet.Smallman12q (talk) 22:42, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Will have time on Sunday to "list a few of the files that don't work"; hope the slow response is ok. Are there tasks that can be offloaded this direction? The Ford Working Group is no longer stalling, and are strongly considering the Daily Diary upload. Whatever happens first, DPLA or Ford db's.
That link ("here's a link to the NARA image source resource itself and here's it's accompanying metadata") is what I imagine too - fingers crossed, right? Is there a way to use grant $$ here? does Smallbot need more power/whatever? It's never entered my mind to do this for $$ - it's more like this is the fun and right thing to do. Bdcousineau (talk) 23:59, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
That's certainly the FOSS approach. Costs for hosting smallbot are negligible...and its developer is mostly just waiting=P. Could you clarify " Are there tasks that can be offloaded this direction?"? Cheers.Smallman12q (talk) 01:34, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
I dunno, it was an offer to do whatever that might help in the "Still have to manually update those files from that excel sheet" from above. Waiting here too, is there any value in approaching the dev's at the DPLA and asking directly for a few sample data strands to see what the download might entail? There's about 30k NARA files to begin with - is this too many? to few? And really, perhaps I'm only fantasizing this - are you in? it turns out that Michael has been playing in the NARAdata for years, so he is. May be too lazy to work on "list a few of the files that don't work" - chapter narrative more urgent. Made a nice circle recently - read the Hacker Maifesto → to the Community Memory article →search for location → a block away last wkend (and prolly never again!) →snapped image →uploaded to Commons → into Community Memory article. As for today, why choose w:Peeps when there is an abundance of yummy chocolate around? Bdcousineau (talk) 13:36, 31 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm still in=) and yes a sample is always beneficial. Hope you had a good Easter (if you celebrate that sort of thing). And happy April Fools=D. You can see wiki's april fools on the front page at w:Main Page (it's a big ?). I'm 3/4 of the way through the The Boy Kings and its a surprisingly good read. As an English major, her technical nativity is evident, but the writing style is good and she offers a genuine reflection of her experiences at what was essentially a frat with engineers=P. I'll create an article this week. Since you're getting more involved, you may be interested The Digital Divide (which is a good primer) and The Truth According To Wikipedia by w:VPRO which summarizes the various views. hello

 • David would welcome a greeting from a knowledgeable user. Turns out there are more than peonies.
 • Metrics may become a more active topic. Details soon.
 • I'd like to suggest an ambitious project to the Ford staff, one that was previously discussed here: uploading the Daily Diary and linking it to image files and contact sheets. Where is the most logical place for the linking? This upload might be approved, as the material has ARC ID #'s and it makes sense to link the diary/image files. It's probably as many pdf pages as the contact sheets. I understand I'd need to provide a db or it's a no go. Bdcousineau (talk) 01:23, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
First will need db. I'm not really sure how to best create a timeline on the wiki....however it can certainly be done. Maybe a table or calender style layout.Smallman12q (talk) 20:45, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Confirming your request[edit]

Just to be sure I understand things correctly, you want me to take the spreadsheet file and insert the ARC numbers (listed in the second column) into the title (listed in the first column), with the result looking like this: "File:this is the title (12345).jpg". Is this correct? If not, please let me know what exactly you want me to do with the spreadsheet. Thanks so much! Michael Barera (talk) 14:04, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

UPDATE: I've figured it out from Bdcousineau, and I've actually finished the project now (so please disregard my question here). She currently has the spreadsheet. Take care! Michael Barera (talk) 15:50, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Having trouble trying to revert an image[edit]

I'm strangely having trouble trying to revert an image to an older version. The image in question is File:Soviet General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev greets President Ford - NARA - 7157128.jpg. Confusingly, the Ford Presidential Library has two highly similar but different images with the same name and description (though different image numbers), so I messed this up a week or so ago by confusing the two. This first image should depict Ford looking forward: the image of Ford looking left is this one. The second image is perfectly fine, but the first image needs to be reverted or re-uploaded with the image of Ford looking forward. I've tried both (as you can see in the upload history), but I strangely can't get either method to work. Do you have any ideas? Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 16:07, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

UPDATE: Don't worry about it. There must just have been a lag: it is fine now. Sorry to bother you...take care! Michael Barera (talk) 19:58, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello!

Hope all is well by you. Excited to see what Smallbot returns... any samples to assess? Have a nice evening. Bdcousineau (talk) 00:38, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

I'll put something up tmrw. I'm busy IRL and will retire from Wikipedia/Commons come June/July. I intend to upload most of the NARA collection by then. It's been a blast, and I wish you and Michael the best! Smallman12q (talk) 21:17, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
Oh my that is big news! While my heart is secretly breaking, I am happy that we can continue on awhile before your next adventure begins.
Been following the brouhaha about the "NYT sexism" article on Jimbo's page and IRL, and I'm glad to see some are taking it where IMHO it needs to go - into the difficulties of categorization and sorting. Darn it, sometimes even just breathing is political. Bdcousineau (talk) 00:04, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
As in rl, there's always drama onwiki as the endless noticeboards and talk pages can attest to. Categorizing isn't that great on wiki and there's always judgement calls there that depend on the editor. I've posted a sample for DPLA on your talk page. Smallman12q (talk) 03:30, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! How the heck did you find the funniest file as a sample? Or conversely, since these are government generated, perhaps they are all humourous. Yes, even GLAM is dramatically moving from a collaboration org to a command org. Scanned the sample, and have comments, but today is for having fun being out doors; will reply in-depth tonight. Bdcousineau (talk) 12:55, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
There are quite a few humorous selections...I just picked it at random=P. Hopefully the consortiums will lead to progress. To be fair, the wiki has had its share of Cabals=P.Smallman12q (talk) 19:44, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Non-native audio files of names[edit]

Hi, it seems like your robot account uploads audio files, such as this: File:En-us-Abu Anas Al-Liby from Libya pronunciation (Voice of America).ogg, which are non-native English pronunciations of names. Those are improperly used in Wikipedia articles, implying that they are native pronunciations. Those pronunciations aid English speakers to approximate the pronunciations to something easy for English speakers. That can be done by an English respelling transcription. Native pronunciations would either have natives pronounce them or have proper IPA for the native language. Thanks. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 23:07, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
