Category:Contact sheets by the Ford White House (October 1975)

Hi Smallman. I did not see any contact sheets in Category:Contact sheets by the Ford White House (October 1975), but found A6748_NLGRF.jpg, which is a contact sheet from Ocober 2, 1975. Although it is not linked on whpo1975.asp, is there a way to use the bot to get that contact sheet and others not linked on whpo1975.asp into Commons? -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 12:52, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

I'll use http://www.fordlibrarymuseum.gov/library/whphotos/whpodatelist.asp and see what wasn't uploaded. There are ~3000 files that weren't uploaded.
Thanks. You are doing a great job. It is frustrating[1] to have to wait on the decision process at the Ford Library and Museum and us volunteers could easily find other things to do. However, we both know that this is an important project (I posted about my views here). The head of NARA and the Ford Library and Museum both support this effort. I'm not sure why that is not translating down to some of the staff. Your efforts are essential to this transfer of material, so I'm hoping you hang in there. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 08:33, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Don't worry...not going anywhere...yet.Smallman12q (talk)

Count bot

Is there a way to have a bot update something like, "The total number of items contributed by the Ford Presidential Library and Museum to this category is xxxx." noted at Category:Media contributed by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum? (I think we should count each frame on the contact sheets as one item.) If not, feel free to undo my edit here. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 15:03, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

That's not necessary. The goal is to get all the digital content, and the museum has a tally of that=P.Smallman12q (talk) 16:40, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Interest in converting all Ford info templates to {{GFPLM-image-full}}

I spoke to an archivist at the Ford Library this morning, and he expressed a strong desire to convert all of the different info templates used on the Ford collaboration uploads to the new {{GFPLM-image-full}} (which he really seems to like). I don't know the best way to do such a conversion (ie, if we can do it by bot or if we have to do it by hand), so I thought that I'd ask you. If it isn't possible to do by bot, then I would certainly be willing to do it by hand, but with over 10,000 files already I'm worried that that will take a long time and may not be the best use of my time. It would be really, really nice to convert to {{GFPLM-image-full}} in the near future, no matter what way we do it. Thanks so much for all your help on the project and have a nice weekend! Michael Barera (talk) 18:43, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

This a simple bot task. I'd simply copy over the values for the old template to the new template. I'll do it sometime.Smallman12q (talk) 23:42, 18 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I really appreciate it! Michael Barera (talk) 01:33, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
This task/request is important to the Archival Staff and will go far to help raise their comfort level. Please don't overlook that we will need to insert the ARC ID #'s into those files that need them. See below. I will ask the Archival Staff to provide the ARC ID #'s, so we don't have to go searching for them. In light of the recent articles about the WiR, and some amazing behind-the-scenes events, things may now go more smoothly.
I will handle inserting the ARC ID's into the photos I uploaded. Getting the ID's from DC will take a week or three. I can do {{GFPLM-image-full}} by hand as there's only a hundred or so.
The photos uploaded by NARA are exempt from this project (not sourced from the Ford Library).
The artifact photos are exempt from needing an ARC ID, but should get {{GFPLM-image-full}}. They are Category:Artifacts at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum
The contact sheets have no ARC ID's.
Perhaps start here? This category needs {{GFPLM-image-full}} and {{GFPLM-image-ARC}}: Category:Documents at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum.
This is a big help, thanks! I'll get those ARC ID's next week (we can't begin or complete their task/request without them). Bdcousineau (talk) 18:52, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

AELG photo's upload

Hi!, I'm very glad that you can realise this upload, only a note, no all the photos of the writers of the AELG can be uploaded , only have licence CC-BY-SA those that are of the photographers Eduardo Castro Bal and Santos-Díez. If, for example, you need a list of URLs of the galleries only of these photographers to facilitate your work, or something like this, warn me and I'll do it. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 14:14, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

Great work!, thank you very much. I only have a note, the link to the photos in source don't work. Could you repair that or can't do it with the bot? Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 11:32, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Image rendering bug is being look into at w:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Images_not_rendering.Smallman12q (talk) 23:49, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
No, I talked about the link to the original source, if you see File:Marga do Val (AELG)-1.jpg, for example, the source link to the original photo is http://www.aelg.org/Centrodoc/DownloadAuthorPhoto.do?photoId=1645Direct, but that link gives an error, and I think that all the photos have the same problem. Could your bot fix that links?. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 08:56, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Oops. I'll run the bot to put a space between Direct and the actual link. Thanks for letting me know.Smallman12q (talk) 03:16, 25 January 2013 (UTC)
Rendering issue has been fixed. I've also fixed the direct link issue.Smallman12q (talk) 04:40, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, great work! Another detail that I have found is that the link to the photo gallery, like this, aims to the general gallery of all the writers, can you do that this link aim to the gallery of the writer to which belongs the photo, like this? I think that it would help to locate the image in this web. Bye, --Elisardojm (talk) 00:05, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
I'll fix that later in the week.Smallman12q (talk) 00:26, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Tracking the WiR article stats

Hello! It's increasingly important to track the instances of the article about the WiR position as they appear and disappear. Would you be interested in doing this, or teaching me how? This story is still circulating, but mostly at the blog level.
There are several categories:

  • an estimated 5-9 main stories (i.e. New York Times, M.live.com, the Wikimedia blog, The Chronicle of Higher Ed, etc)
  • reposts of these main stories unaltered on aggregators and other news sites and fb pages (mostly the NYTimes piece)
  • blogs
  • tweets
  • AP story - this had a short shelf life - appearing and disappearing quickly on some news sites

I've been doing basic google searches using Ford Library Wikipedian to watch the story. I'd now like to save the instances of it. Currently I've cut/pasted/saved about 4 pages of urls across the categories. There must be a better way! Bdcousineau (talk) 09:50, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Personally, I use a proprietary real-time news feed for traders...but for normal folks google would suffice. Just limit the search time to past week/24 hours. You could also use a subscription database like w:NewsBank or w:Factiva. To prevent w:link rot, you could use on demand web archiving such as w:WebCite or w:Read It Later(don't know how well it still works) or simply take a screenshot of the url using a free browser extension for firefox/chrome. NARA is an archive institution, so you may have other tools you can use. There's also the social media folks who could do this. On a side note, wikt:grunt work is often given to interns=P. Hope this helps.Smallman12q (talk) 00:02, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Xosé Abeal (AELG)-1.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this gallery, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Ford artifacts

I spoke with Jamie, and he agrees that the artifact images uploaded to the Ford website can live there as thumbs, while the full size versions can live on Commons. This makes sense in that over the last several months we’ve experienced a noticeable increase in people referencing Ford artifacts via Commons, NOT the Ford website. I will create a table for our images similar to User:Bdcousineau/sandbox7on the Ford website, and as the images make their way onto Commons, I will insert the Commons file url into our website table.

Have you seen this new function that auto-generates a Wikipedia link for every object? We would love to have something like this on the Ford website, but of course have no idea what/how/where to begin. If you have interest in developing/helping us to develop something like this, we are all ears!

It’s my understanding that in the next 24 months our current artifact website will be scraped and replaced by a TMS database (realistically that could mean 36 months) –seems like a perfect opportunity to insert that functionality. Bdcousineau (talk) 17:40, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

I should be able to auto-generate the table...we try to automate where we can. That function for autogenerating a wikipedia link is very easy to do...a few lines (~5) of JavaScript could do it. You take the current page url, stick it into a template, and attach the template to the html document which is rendered by the browser. 36 months...that's quite a timeline. I'm guessing you're aiming for something webbish, but not too webbish=P.Smallman12q (talk) 01:48, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Question about editing Images

Hi, I noticed you were able to change the name of one of the images I uploaded last week to better suit it's purpose. Thank you. Also, I'm currently trying to figure out how to do the same thing with another image I want to be more specific about. Could explain how to go about doing so? Thanks. Anmats 14:50 February, 4, 2013.

It's rather confusing for a new user, you should ask User:Michael Barera to do it, or list what you want moved (from and to). You could request file move rights at Commons:Requests_for_rights#Filemover. If its only for a few files, you could request the files be moved using Help:RenameLink. Go to the top of the screen->preferences->gadgets, under "Interface" make sure RenameLink is checked->scroll to bottom and click save. Now go to the file you want to move, at the top, right of the star, is a down arrow, move the cursor over the arrow and click move. Pick a reason to move and the a new filename. It'll be a while (5min-2days) before the file is moved so use the old filename until then. The old filename will be automatically replaced when the file is moved. Smallman12q (talk) 02:03, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for your help and my apologies for not getting back to you sooner! Anmats (talk) 10:10, 6 February 2013
I'm a filemover and I'm happy to help. What are the files you would like to move, Anmats, and what would you like me to rename them to? (Please drop me a line on my talk page and I'll get to it as soon as I can: thanks!) Michael Barera (talk) 23:58, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Issue with this photo

I have come to realize that the US government uses a lot of clip art bought from stock photo places. This photo for example [2] thinkstock [3] Unfortunately I think Wikipedia / Commons has dozens of these. Thoughts? James Heilman, MD (talk) 08:56, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Beside tagging the images with {{Copyvio}} not much can be done. Smallman12q (talk) 01:57, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

thanks

Thank you very much for updating {{GFPLM-image-ARC/en}} and Category:Documents at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum. Bdcousineau (talk) 17:32, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

next Ford Museum task

Hello and happy Monday. The next task, should you choose to accept it, is to insert {{GFPLM-image-ARC/en}} to these two categories:

This is the second-to-last bit of adjusting the Ford Working Group is interested in seeing, before considering any future uploads. The Group will potentially meet again later this month to assess next moves. In the meantime, I am updating artifact file templates to {{Artwork}}, and counting snowflakes. Bdcousineau (talk) 16:03, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Hopefully your edit-a-thon went well (though I see no press-releases). The working group is making progress? I'll fix the template later this week...also only use {{GFPLM-image-ARC}} not the language one ({{GFPLM-image-ARC/en}}) directly otherwise it won't translate. There were quite a few snowflakes out here -.- Smallman12q (talk) 01:06, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Press release? "We don't need no stinkin' press release!" Bdcousineau (talk) 16:41, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
ps. I know there was a discussion about the |source parameter - I need to create a list of Commons file names matched with Ford web url's - the Ford Working Group wants the url to live in the |source field, in addition to having the ARC id # as a link.
Crap! this puts us back a week or so. Here is a start - User:Bdcousineau/sandbox8 is this useful? Bdcousineau (talk) 18:49, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
I could also add in the source param...I'd prefer an excel spreadsheet with 3 columns: filename(not url...though I can convert url to filename with a w:one-liner program), url, url name (or if you want them all the same).Smallman12q (talk) 02:26, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Ok, will do, and send via .... email or ftp? Bdcousineau (talk) 14:00, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
Email, ftp, or a link online from filehost(such as sendspace.com).Smallman12q (talk) 14:16, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
The first hundred to check format (highlighted files need name change in Commons - rename request going in today). xls here. I estimate I'll be done next Tues. It's about 4 hours per 100 incl. snacking/daydreaming - there's 300 of these. Sadly personal iPad will not support this at home (unless I can find app), and long weekend off coming up. Bdcousineau (talk) 17:26, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

-You can get filemover rights at Commons:Requests_for_rights#Filemover so you can move the file (it's not hard). I'd prefer the final file-name so I don't have to write redirect-aware logic. Let me know when you (or your intern) finish listing all the files. Smallman12q (talk) 23:20, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

final list here. No redirect-aware logic needed. There's only 200 - other category has complications to be worked out later. Thanks so much. After this, the 300 images that were missing ARC ID's. Almost all images now have ARC id's assigned by NARA. When that batch is ready, I'll send a sample xls to see if all the correct data is there. Have a great weekend! Bdcousineau (talk) 17:05, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Will do. You simply want it in the format: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum: H0010-2>? (I'm assuming it's all museum)Smallman12q (talk) 22:18, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
NO -! it's all LIBRARY, so please replace Museum with Library, then it's perfecto. So glad you mentioned that. Bdcousineau (talk) 00:53, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
My mistake. Will do: Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library: H0010-2.Smallman12q (talk) 02:53, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
Hello! Monday again, snow blindness abating. Any chance you have time to insert the updated {{GFPLM-image-ARC}} into Category:US National Archives series: Gerald and Betty Ford Historical Photographs, compiled 08/09/1974 - 01/20/1977, documenting the period 1884 - 1974? I uploaded via FTP the excel spreadsheet with the new source parameter links (last week).
Complication with this set Category:US National Archives series: Gerald R. Ford White House Photographs, compiled 08/09/1974 - 01/20/1977 - putting it off for now.
The other project-group of photos getting new ARC ID's - is stalled, the lady giving out the ARC ID's is on leave.
Really appreciate it. Also working with the Collections Dept. to get the new images ready for upload. No date on that yet, tho. Bdcousineau (talk) 15:04, 25 February 2013 (UTC)
I'll do it Wed/Thurs. Smallman12q (talk) 00:05, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
