Griffon vulture in flight
Comment To the author: Please, tell us where the image was taken. The bird bears a ring, any information on that? Is it a 'captive' bird? --Cayambe (talk) 06:56, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Comment The photo was taken at Carmel mount in Israel. There is a nature reserve on that mount, where they DO keep some captive vultures in cages (many Griffon vultures, some Egyptian vultures and to the best of my knowledge a pair of Lappet-faced vultures). Vultures in cages are used as a breeding kernel: as soon as these captive birds bring a new chick, the chick is taken away from them, treated and raised in a way it doesn't get imprinted to humans and is released to the wild. So this way they create a wild population of birds. However, vultures that are raised this way get a wing tag as well - so people from the ground could see who's flying and keep their records. So I assume that this specific one (without wing tags) is of European origin: it flew here for the winter and joined the local flock. PS. local Israeli vultures look this way: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File%3AGriffon_vulture_at_Gamla_nature_reserve.jpg Artemy Voikhansky (talk) 08:12, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks for the explanation Artemy Voikhansky. I have copied it to the file's page. This is the kind of info that those who want to use the photo will be looking for, so it should be on that page instead of here where the text will be sort of hidden from sight in a couple of weeks. If you have similar background info for you other photos, please add it, it will enhance the value of your fine photos. A geotag would also be much appreciated. --cart-Talk 13:20, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
