Should be the filename absolutely unambiguous?

The file File:Boršov nad Vltavou, železniční most.jpg, taken in 2009, was proposed on 24 March 2017 to rename to File:Boršov nad Vltavou, původní železniční most.jpg by Martin Vrut with a comment: "Reason: most byl nahrazen novým; Criterion 13". (Btw, no criterion 13 was linked and I can see no criterion 13 at Commons:File renaming page.) Speravir complied with this request.

I think, the original file name was descriptive and appropriate enough. The assumption that the filename should be absolutely unambiguous and should be made more detailed and more updated again and again and extended with words "original" or "former" as soon as the photographed subject become changed or demolished is unacceptable. Every filename can be potentially more detailed and more extensive, but filename is not intended to be absolutely exhausting and unambiguous and successively updated - it should be rather brief and stable.

This one file need not to be reverted (the rename was needless but the new name is not wrong), however we should change the guideline to be not confusing in such way.

The original guideline contained a criterion "change from completely meaningless names into suitable names", however on 4 March 2012, Rillke changed it to "To change from a meaningless or ambiguous name to a name that describes what the image particularly displays." In the 2012 discussion archive is no previous discussion, some related issues were discussed in 2011.

To achieve a conformity with the linked explanation, the words "To change from a meaningless or ambiguous name" should be replaced with "To change from a meaningless or too general name", and the linked note no. 2 should be supplemented by negative examples to prevent such needless renames. --ŠJů (talk) 20:50, 25 March 2017 (UTC)

I quite agree. Files should not be moved simply because some arguably 'better' name exists, but because there is actually a problem with the existing name. Filename stability is important, and that way lies madness. - Revent^talk 00:53, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

"ldquo,/rdquo," filenames

There are some 857 filenames that contain the strings "ldquo," and "rdquo,", apparent remnants of auto-uploading from a source (the U.S. Navy, as far as I have seen) that used these strings to call left and right apostrophes. Typical examples include:

Photos renamed - Prison of Christ Greek Orthodox vs Church of the Flagellation

I'm not sure if this is the right place to have this discussion but some help is needed over these rename requests by Djampa (talk · contribs), concerning photos by Hoshvilim (talk · contribs)

The descriptions described them as being in the Church of the Flagellation, but they were in Category:Prison of Christ Greek Orthodox so it appeared to me that the request was correct, and since Richardkiwi didn't move it to Category:Interior of the Church of the Flagellation, I AGF and thought he hadn't noticed the category. But then I noticed that Djamba is the one who changed the categories, so Beko and I might have screwed up. So if Djamba is right about where these photos were taken, the files need to have the descriptions corrected, or, if Hoshvilim was correct, we need to rename them and move them back to Category:Interior of the Church of the Flagellation. rename template used with invalid extension

FYI - please see my comment, Template talk:Rename#Rename requests with invalid extensions, about people using the template with invalid extensions as the destination file. If you see a file in Category:Media requiring renaming that has no rename template on it, that's probably the reason why. I don't know who maintains that template but hopefully it can be altered so that if someone manually requests an invalid extension or extension that doesn't match the filetype, it will instead show an error template that is visible to anyone who looks at the file. Files requiring rename to sensible name

There is a set of files named "Phone pix <number>" that need renaming to something sensible to reflect the content. See here Keith D (talk) 19:30, 30 September 2017 (UTC)

Mperezreviriego

Mperezreviriego (talk · contribs) is obsessively renaming a group of files in Category:Antonio Machado and Baeza (uploaded by another user in 2016) to resort them. The original author named them numerically, but Mperezreviriego is unhappy because files named 1, 2, 3, appear after 10, 11, 12 etc. so he continues to request renaming (01, 02, 03, etc). I've explained already on his talk page (in the best Spanish I can manage) that all he needs to do is to create a sort key if his goal is to make them appear in a certain order (even though it's completely irrelevant in this case, as the files are numbered randomly anyway). He has now started an entirely new naming campaign to achieve his sorting goals. @Tiven2240 and B dash: renamed some while @Ruthven, Capricorn4049, Marcus Cyron, Richardkiwi, and Mhhossein: and others have declined them. You can see the result in the category. Ruthven, as you are an administrator, can you revert them all to the original names? I'm pinging everyone as an FYI. Also, I think it would be helpful if there were some feature in the file rename tool that alerted you that the file has already been declined by another filemover. (It's easy to forget to look down to see if there is a link to "recently declined moves" and the link is only temporary anyway). Wikimandia (talk) 10:22, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

Lists of files with errors in name

I got a list of 457 files having the word "Mediaeval" in their name. Can someone rename them automatically into "Medieval"? Fructibus (talk) 08:07, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

@Fructibus:  Not done That spelling is merely dated, not wrong. Besides, where would one find a fully automatic mass renaming script or bot? I don't want to hear about "Mediæval", either.   — Jeff G. ツ 10:13, 12 October 2017 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Uhh, I thought someone should have a mass renaming script or bot since it looks like a very necessary tool.

Meanwhile I've found names containing semicolon (";") without a space after it, containing dots (".") with a space before it, also I've found some 29k names containing a space before a comma (",") - like for example this one File:Brooch , Roman (FindID 514629).jpg - but I haven't included them in the list. It should be easy enough using copy/paste to insert the requests on that page using the request format: {{universal replace|OLD NAME.jpg|NEW NAME OR ANOTHER FILE.jpg|reason=STATE THE REASON FOR THE REQUEST HERE}}. @Fructibus: Perfect, except you need to add reason= to the script (change to "|reason=Wonky Unicode encoding}}") or the reason does not display. You should put them in the section User_talk:CommonsDelinker/commands#Other_requests. I don't know about the other punctuation problems... Since there are thousands of them, this would have to be a batch request done. I really can't think of any problems a mass rename like this would mean, since there is no reason for a space before punctuation, but an administrator would have to approve it. Jeff G said there is no mass renaming tool but I am sure there is at the administrative level for technical problems (ie a find and replace). Wikimandia (talk) 15:32, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
