Admin?

Hi Jacklee, have you ever considering nominating for adminship here at Commons? I see that you do a lot of tasks on Commons which may benefit from you having the admin tools. Have a serious think about an RFA. russavia (talk) 11:48, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

OK, will think about it. Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:52, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi Jack, have you had time to think about this? Your name appears every day on my watchlist, seeing you requesting tasks to be done that could be done yourself with the admin tools; which would be a benefit to the community. russavia (talk) 20:12, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, it's been a busy time for me. I need to find out more about what it means to be an administrator. Is there a page I can read about this? — Cheers, JackLee talk 20:14, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
No worries mate. You can read everything you may need to know at Commons:Administrators. I know many people would support an RfA if you were to request the tools. russavia (talk) 21:07, 25 July 2012 (UTC)
Hi there, I noticed your comments at Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Backlog_at_.22User_talk:CommonsDelinker.2Fcommands.22 and I got to thinking that if you were an admin you would be able to help to do such things if you had time/the inclination. Have you given any thought to the above from last year? I really think it is long overdue that you RfA here on Commons, and if you like I'd be happy to nominate you. What do you think? russavia (talk) 21:01, 20 October 2013 (UTC)

Barnstar etc

The Working Commoner's Barnstar
For all that you do here to help others, organize things, etc. INeverCry 22:33, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
  • PS. I noticed above that Russavia suggested you become an admin a short time ago; I would support an RFA from you as well, if/when you feel you're ready. INeverCry 22:33, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! About the admin thingy – haven't had much time to look into it yet. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:29, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
You know that I and presumably also many other contributors (read this somewhere) would support your RfA. Consider that it will also ease your work (deleted files etc., abuse filter logs, commons delinker access, …). -- Rillke(q?) 12:04, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

Why did you add this image?

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Creator:Michiel_Jansz._van_Mierevelt&diff=62832199&oldid=55421103 There is nothing in the description that indicates why it should be a portrait of Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt. If you happen to know that he is depicted there, and who he his, please crop the image and upload it under a different name, and then include this cropped portrait in the Creator template. --FA2010 (talk) 19:05, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

I thought that it would be a good idea to add one of van Mierevelt's works to the template in place of a portrait of him (as we don't have one). He doesn't appear in that painting. — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:56, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

I would like to hear your thoughts about this. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 19:20, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello Jacklee, This page is only for requests related to renamed files. Other, potentially controversial requests must be proposed at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands. Yours sincerely‎--Steinsplitter (talk) 14:17, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

OK. I didn't think my request was potentially controversial. — Cheers, JackLee talk 14:19, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
feel free to add your request on User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands, :-) --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:35, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
One was a painting if I remember correctly which should be replaced by a photo. This, indeed, required individually visiting the pages it was used on. I've done it. -- Rillke(q?) 11:57, 8 May 2013 (UTC)

Maps of traditional counties of Scotland

Category:Maps of traditional counties of Scotland. Some images of County maps are from two volumes c.1868 in the National Library of Scotland. Would you be able to obtain permission for these images please as I notice that you have already acquired permission for other map images from the N.L.S.. Thank you. Scotire (talk) 06:45, 22 May 2013 (UTC) If permission is not forthcoming, would you please delete them. Thankyou. Scotire (talk) 07:13, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't recall ever working on such files. Are you confusing me with another editor? — Cheers, JackLee talk 23:08, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

There is discussion here about this file if you'd like to offer input. Alternatively, you are welcome to comment further at your Graphics lab request. – JBarta (talk) 08:17, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, I commented on the Photography workshop page. — Cheers, JackLee talk 12:04, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Photo archives

You may wish to contact someone like w:Jennifer Graylock. I hear she has a collection that is quite impressive and may store them. The WMF may give her a tax right-off for storage if they agree to some type of shared ownership deal. WMF and her both get rights to use type thing. After scanning they could be sold on EBay for profit or at least subsidize costs. Scan the better ones first for better EBay sales? --Canoe1967 (talk) 21:24, 16 June 2013 (UTC)

Hmmm, interesting. I just e-mailed the Internet Archive to see if they are interested. If I don't hear from them I guess an e-mail to Graylock wouldn't hurt either. — Cheers, JackLee talk 09:54, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
You may wish to email the photographer as well. See if he can give us a ballpark figure of the cubic or square feet of storage needed. See if anyone has a truck in the WM NYC project, get costs of moving and storage, etc. A collector like Jennifer may agree to pay costs if we can just send her an estimate and give her a key to the locker once moved. She may even find storage near her house or shop. She is the first one that came to mind but places like w:The Art Institute of New York City may help with funding if not storage.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:02, 17 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! I reposted the e-mail address in the Village Pump discussion as an editior from Wikimedia NYC has joined it. It may be better for editors on the ground to get in touch with Dee directly. — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:30, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Inappropriate file renaming

Logan Talk Contributions 03:47, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Oh, OK. I thought the original name was not very accurate because the file wasn't a photograph of the Academy itself but its logo only. — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:36, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Scottish society arms still unidentified

Hello, Jacklee! I notice you added the “nearest match“ I mentioned at en- WT:HV to the description at File:Cabinet in the anteroom of the Chief Justice's Chambers, Old Supreme Court Building, Singapore - 20101010-01.JPG. Sorry, but I‘m pretty sure that’s not the correct identification; I only brought it up as an example of a Scottish society with similar arms. I believe the Royal Signet would have been a calligraphic monogram: “GR“, “G III R“, or similar, and moreover I left out the rest of the blazon, describing an inscription around the border of the shield. Whatever those conical charges are (they look a little like Thai coronets, Phra Kiao), I doubt they can be construed as signets, or even signet rings. So please amend the file description to call the shield unidentified or to omit mention of it (for the time being); my apologies for misleading you by raising that speculative example. (Also illustrating the theme, each with significant differences: The Heraldry Society, Society of Antiquaries, Law Society.) I’ll be sure to let you know if I find a correct identification.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 18:52, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Actually, I think you were bang on, and the coat of arms shown is that of the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet: see, for example, "en:File:WSSociety.JPEG" and [1]. Note that that is the Society's coat of arms, not the actual signet itself (which is described here). It stands to reason that the coats of arms on the cabinets are of the learned legal societies in England and Scotland to which some of the judges of the Straits Settlements, and later the Colony of Singapore, State of Singapore and Republic of Singapore, were members of. — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:10, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
Well, I’ll be …. Thanks for following up! So the charge is intended to represent the signet itself rather than the device it bears—seen ‘in action’, so to speak, face down—and you’ve contributed to my heraldic education.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:39, 13 October 2013 (UTC)
You're welcome! Yes, I guess the charges that look like Hershey's Kisses are meant to be the monarch's signet. They have the Latin words "SIGNETUM" and "REGIUM" on them, which I take to mean "royal signet". — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:47, 13 October 2013 (UTC)

Photo I took that was deleted

I just now saw a message you left me in mid-August (I rarely come on Commons). Why was the photo deleted? I took it myself when I was visiting Seattle last spring. I would like an explanation please, because the "copyright" reason is confusing to me - it's an original photograph. Jrcla2 (talk) 03:58, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Also, please post on my wall. I'll never remember to read it here. Thanks! Jrcla2 (talk) 04:00, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

OK, I responded on your user talk page. — Cheers, JackLee talk 18:26, 16 October 2013 (UTC)

Can you delete a file?

Some vandal uploaded File:Self acclaimed "Stud" 2013-10-18 23-37.jpg and tried adding it to an article on the English Wikipedia. Not only is this photo nonsense, it's clearly an underage child who did not give consent for his photo to be used on the website. Jrcla2 (talk) 14:11, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

I'm not an administrator and so can't delete the image speedily. You can nominate images for speedy deletion by adding a {{Speedy}} tag and providing a reason, like this: "{{speedy|It appears that this image was used to attack the person shown in the image because the uploader tried to add it to the "XYZ" article on the English Wikipedia: see [provide a link to the diff showing the addition of the image].}}"
However, I'm not sure the minor's lack of consent by itself is sufficient. For example, if I take a photograph of children at a zoo, the fact that it may be a breach of their privacy is generally not regarded as preventing the image from being uploaded to the Commons. This is because the Commons is generally not concerned about non-copyright restrictions. It is for people who reuse images (e.g., by publishing them in books and magazines) to determine for themselves whether they need to comply with any non-copyright restrictions applicable in the country they are in. A {{Personality}} tag can be added to images of clearly identifiable people to warn people about this. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:47, 19 October 2013 (UTC)

You wrong

dont delet that pic. u wrong. i know everything about iran and u from far lands cant learn me waht in iran have CP righ or not. Schools wallpainting have not any CP right bcz they dont art work. they are Commerace. a painter comes and take money and paint walls.thats all. he is not artist. Sonia Sevilla (talk) 02:57, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, what you said is not confirmed by the Law for the Protection of Authors, Composers and Artist Rights of Iran, which states that works such as "[p]aintings, pictures, drawings, designs, ... or any decorative and imaginative work produced in any simple or complex manner" have copyright until 50 years after the creator of the paintings died, or until 22 August 2010 if the creator died before 22 August 1980: see "Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Iran". There is nothing in the Law which states that if a person is paid for his work by someone else (such as the kindergarten), the work is not copyrighted. Even if the artist is an employee of the kindergarten, the kindergarten owns the copyright in the work for 30 years from the date the work was produced: see Article 13 of the Law. Therefore, to show that the work is now no longer copyrighted, you have to be able to show one of the following:
  1. The artist died before 22 August 1980.
  2. The artist was an employee of the kindergarten, and the murals were painted before 12 November 1983 (at least 30 years ago).
I hope this explains why the photographs need to be nominated for deletion. If you still disagree, I suggest that you ask for further help by posting a message at "Commons:Village pump/Copyright". — Cheers, JackLee talk 04:57, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
im thanks u very much. but i can swear that painting has not any copyright. u look to world from ur western frame jacklee.maybe iranian administator can help me.deleting of picture uploaded of any user is a type of Attenuation and contempt! .--Sonia Sevilla (talk) 05:09, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
I am not basing my opinion on any "western frame" but on the wording of the copyright law of Iran. I encourage you to read it yourself. Again, if you disagree you are welcome to ask for a second opinion at "Commons:Village pump/Copyright". — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:12, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
if u not based , but wikimedia clearly based on "English View" and "Westerm Frame". the law of iran is for iranian people. im not iranian. i just live in iran. so,i dont follow iranian local laws for picturing.and i also dont find cp rights Logially, bcz i just taked a PICTURE and Cp right can be for objects itself, not a digital picture taked form it.--Sonia Sevilla (talk) 05:44, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
That is not how copyright works. Copyright is an exclusive right for the creator of a work to prevent others from copying the work without permission. Taking photographs of another person's copyrighted work and publishing them without the permission of the creator is a breach of copyright. If an artist cannot stop people from taking photographs of his or her work, then copyright would be worthless. Also, if you live in Iran you are subject to Iranian law. You cannot claim that since you are not an Iranian citizen all the laws of the country do not apply to you and you can simply ignore them. That is illogical. — Cheers, JackLee talk 05:59, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I'm afraid starting this tree was a mistake. Many of the objects are moved around quite frequently, and it is not worth trying to categorize them in this way. Several of the objects are wrongly placed at the moment. Plus one major location, Hampton Court Palace, is neither in Windsor nor London. Johnbod (talk) 02:40, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

It's been a while since I worked on this. I have a few questions:
  • Are there no objects which are permanently in one location?
  • What is your suggestion concerning objects that are moved around?
