Hi.

I have 2 images that I received permission for via email from the creator. Should I first email Wikipedia and wait for a ticket or should I upload first.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dovikap (talk • contribs) 08:15, 7 July 2014‎ (UTC)

Map from 1934

Here is an anthropological map from 1934. The author is the German physical anthropologist w:Egon Freiherr von Eickstedt. Can I upload it without license problems? --Su4kin (talk) 12:55, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

No. As shown by Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Germany, copyright expires 70 years after the author's death in Germany, and 1965 is less than 70 years ago. LX (talk, contribs) 16:29, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Image deleted

Hello,

I uploaded the logo of the ISC for whom I am actually working and it was deleted as you told that you were not sure that it was free to use. If I am working for the ISC and I want its logo to appear on its wikipedia page, how can I do?

Thanks,

Théo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Théo Fleismaher (talk • contribs) 05:43, 2 July 2014‎ (UTC)

If the logo has been published under a free licence or released into the public domain, a citation in the Source field, or a link to the owner’s site saying so, should do. Otherwise you (or someone else with authority to act on the organization’s behalf) should contact OTRS, who will issue a “ticket“ once they’re satisfied of the suitability of the licence. That will serve to advise users that the source of the permission has been verified.
If your sole purpose is to illustrate an article on the English Wikipedia (which is a separate website, with its own policies), you could upload the image there as non-free media with a fair use rationale. This would not require the release of any copyrights.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:18, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi Théo! You might want to have a look at Commons:Guidance for paid editors. It includes information on providing evidence of your affiliations and on sharing logotypes. LX (talk, contribs) 11:15, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

No subject

Hi,

I uploaded a photo of Neil Thomas Proto. It was deleted even after I sent permissions-commons@wikimedia.org the correct release information (as stipulated on their Wikipedia page). I provided you all with legal permission from the owner of the photo (I even gave you his contact information so that you could contact him directly), yet you've deleted the photo. What am I doing wrong? How can I get the photo approved so that I can include a photo on Proto's Wikipedia page?

Thanks,

--Balbenus (talk) 18:46, 2 July 2014 (UTC)

Did you include {{OTRS pending}} or any indication that you'd sent something in on the file description page? If not, the users involved with the deletion probably didn't know about that. If you've sent in an appropriate permission, then you don't need to do anything else at this point. The image will be undeleted once the volunteers processing permission e-mails get around to it (which can take some time). If they need anything else from you, they will get back to you via e-mail. Ayuda para subir imagen

Buenas tardes.

Google translated - Hola Usuario:Jhoez. Por favor, pregunte el fotógrafo para enviar un correo electrónico a permissions-commons@wikimedia.org con el formato en COM:ET. Upload Wizard & Flickr

I tried to use the Upload Wizard to put up the set of shots from the Heart Truth 2013 show to Commons, as that tool will easily handle albums. The set in question can be found here. Problem I bumped into is that the Upload Tool does not recognize the United States Government Work license present on the images and returns an error saying "Unfortunately, no images from this Flickr account can be uploaded on this site." Can someone add this license to the wizard? Tabercil (talk) 18:34, 30 June 2014 (UTC)

AFAIR this account is blacklisted, there are several images taged with news services as origin (in exif data) yet classified as USGov work. --Denniss (talk) 18:56, 30 June 2014 (UTC)
Huh. Hadn't noticed that... I'll get in touch with them to try and clear that issue up. It's interesting that the EXIF data reads "Getty Images for Heart Truth", which makes me think that the "for Heart Truth" qualifier is significant. Maybe Getty was hired to take the shots? If so, then the question would be who owns the shots? If it's The Heart Truth, then the PD-US license would be accurate. Tabercil (talk) 15:03, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
If that account is as problematic as it's listing at Commons:Questionable Flickr images prompted by this discussion and these deletion discussions, we probably shouldn't have 225 images from that account hosted here, including at least 16 photos where Getty Images employees are claimed to be employees of the US Federal Government... LX (talk, contribs) 00:06, 6 July 2014 (UTC)
Well if we're casting aspersions on Flickr accounts, what about LGEPR? If you look at the description for File:Gabourey Sidibe with the LG Electronics Kompressor Vacuum on 25th Spirit Awards Blue Carpet held at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on March 5, 2010 in LA.jpg you'll see that it clearly states "Photo by George Pimentel/WireImage.com". The exact same image can be found on the Getty website here. How do I upload information about a book?

If I want to make an entry about a book, how do I upload that information? I get a message that says "does not accept doc.x files". I tried to make a file to upload and I get a message that says "does not accept doc.x files". I would like to enter all sorts of information on several novels that are not on Wiki. Thanks for the help in advance.

You can't upload articles to Wikipedia, you'll have to use the editing tools provided by the Website to write it (copy&paste is possible to some extent though.) See en:Help:Editing, en:Wikipedia:Starting an article, en:Wikipedia:Your first article, etc. Note that here you are at Wikimedia Commons, which is for media files such as pictures or videos only. --El Grafo (talk) 16:15, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

PD-GreekGov

I want to upload an image. I am using the template {{PD-GreekGov}} in the field "Another reason not mentioned above" and I am getting the following message: "This does not seem to be valid wikitext, or does not contain a license."

Other templates (eg {{PD-GermanGov}}) are ok. Why? Christou c (talk) 18:08, 7 July 2014 (UTC)

I guess it’s because the GreekGov template is actually a redirect to an /en subpage, while the GermanGov is what it says on the label, so to speak. Sorry, I don’t know why they’re treated differently. I suggest you use a generic licence while uploading, just to satisfy the wizard, then edit the description page to replace it with the proper template afterward; I don‘t think such a ‘white lie‘ should be a problem if it’s only up for a few minutes.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:35, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

Uploading from an Android tablet

Two days ago I got around to uploading some pics, here, I took with the camera built into my Acer brand Android tablet PC. I uploaded using the Commons 'UploadWizard'. It was a bit of a trial and took far longer than expected.

Note: This is the first time (IIRC) I have tried uploading more than one picture at a time, and I've only previously uploaded a very few (2-3) to Flickr, and once to Wikipedia.

  • After getting to 'Upload' on the wizard, I found I had to click on "Select media files to share" then
    • "Select an action" on my tablet
    • Select the source on my tablet (Gallery)
    • then select whether it was actually a camera picture/ screenshot/download etc, (select 'Camera' )
    • then I had to scroll through the pictures for the one I wanted,
    • then select it.
    • Then click 'Add more files' ('.. again' after the first pic)

About 5 clicks, plus a scroll to find it, for every picture. And this is leaving out changing the filenames, if required, and any other info I want to add.

  • I think this is actually shorter than the way I did it before as writing a description of the process taught me to select 'Gallery' not 'Camera' as the initial "action", cutting about 2 steps out! :-\ (I think, I can't remember exactly what I did before, or can't reproduce it. :-( )

Anyway, is there an easier way to do it like Uploading to Flickr first then transferring to Commons?

I suppose what I really want to do is be able to select multiple images, instead of one at a time. I suppose a PC using Windows would make this possible, but

a) the pics I was uploading were on the tablet, or a micro SD card in my actual camera.
b) I don't have the hardware to transfer from the tablet, or SD card, to a thumb drive, so I can use a 'full size' PC or laptop.
c) I have minimal access to a working Windows machine right now,

So if there is an easier way to do it with what I currently have, an Android tablet with a micro SD card slot, I would be very happy to know, as I have potentially about 100+ pictures to upload and doing it the way I was will send me nuts!

It was basically my first time, but took me over half an hour to upload, with all information, 7 pictures! 220 of Borg (talk) 05:33, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

How to upload a photo to a Wikipedia biography???

I would like to upload a photograph of my late partner (Harry Arons) to his Wikipedia biography, but can't figure out HOW to do it? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. BarryZecca@AOL.com -- 16:41, 15 July 2014‎ User:Cehotmail

You don't upload "to" a biography article. Rather, you upload to either en.wikipedia.org or commons.wikimedia.org (depending on which is most suitable for the particular situation), and then add it to the biography article. upload stuck at 'Submitting details and publishing...'

I just uploaded Ae_test1.pdf, which was about 140mb. The Upload Wizard was used, after I changed the preferences to chunking. The file uploaded per normal. And then the upload wizard page changed to 'Submitting details and publishing' -
It has been giving a 'progress animated gif' for about 30 minutes.
Is this long delay normal? Or, is there some problem? I am user jimfunderburk.

Update one hour later.

(a) When I click the 'Uploads' button to see my uploads, this Ae_test1.pdf shows as being available.
(b) However, the 'Upload Wizard' page is still in the Describe section and shows 'Submitting details ...'; it has not moved to the Use section. So, maybe this is a bug? -- 23:56, 16 July 2014‎ User:Jimfunderburk
File:Ae test1.pdf seems to be fine, as far as I can tell. If there are any further edits needed to the image description page, you should do them manually -- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ae_test1.pdf?action=edit ... -- AnonMoos (talk) 04:36, 17 July 2014 (UTC)

Hi,

How can I re-upload this photo and tag it properly? When I try to upload it, it won't upload and I get a message saying that a similar file has been removed.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Malcolm eight (talk • contribs) 20:30, 28 July 2014‎ (UTC)

Hello Malcolm. Your uploaded file was deleted because it had no Commons-compatible license. If you click on the redlink, you will see the note says "you may re-upload the file, but please include a license tag". However instead of simply trying to re-upload the file, I would recommend you use the procedure at COM:UNDEL, making sure to explain the case in as much detail as possible including the appropriate license that you will use. I hope that helps. Green Giant (talk) 23:11, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Upload problem

I uploaded a picture I took in France using the upload wizard. It originally said the upload was successful. When I completed the Describe tab, though, it then said there was an error: api-error-unknownerror. I've hit retry upload twice, but I get the same error. What now?--Bbb23 (talk) 14:01, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

The Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness and never seems to provide error messages that are even remotely useful. Since you're a long-time user, you might already be familiar with Commons:Upload, which tends to be much more reliable. LX (talk, contribs) 14:40, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
Heh, don't be fooled. I come here mainly to nominate a file for deletion or tag it with a speedy. I've uploaded one other picture before now, and it was quite some time ago. I haven't the faintest memory of how I did it. In any event, I used one of the forms, and it seems to have worked. Thanks for your help.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:00, 26 July 2014 (UTC)

Google translation: how do I upload file written in WorldPad and having photos.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like anyone who speaks Spanish is going to answer. You might have more luck at Commons:Café (but I see a lot of unanswered questions there as well). Wikimedia Commons (this site) is a media repository which hosts media files. This includes photographs, scanned images, diagrams, animations, audio (e.g. music or spoken word) and video clips. It usually does not include written documents. Content such as encyclopædia articles or news articles should not be uploaded as files. Instead, they should be entered directly to Wikipedia or Wikinews using wiki markup. Photos may be uploaded separately here if they are within Commons' project scope. According to https://developers.google.com/photo-sphere/, it is an open format with documentation and example code covered by free licenses. The format is currently not supported by Commons, but it looks like it should be possible to implement a compatible viewer for sphere files hosted on Commons rather than in Google's cloud.
