Number of changes

The zh.wikipedia.org main page seems to be changing way more often than it should. Almost every 20 minutes there is a change which is then undone the next run. Looks like they might need a higher protection level or stricter review before stuff is pushed live ? –Krinkle^talk 18:18, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Yes, please do so. I will consider turning off the bot temporarily (if this does not happen) as it's currently rendering the bot useless (images that are in the other 4 DYK's can be vandalized). Note that Wikipedia pages are cached for anonymous users, they will not see "random" DYK. They'll all see the same until the cache expires. Registered users/bots will see a fresh version though. Off-topic: Consider using JavaScript if you want "randomness" on a page, abusing MediaWiki cache for that is not recommended. –Krinkle^talk 21:19, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi,

As noted above, I've disabled the bot for now because these number of edits caused by it are unacceptable to me. If Chinese Wikipedia would really update that much, then I have no problem with it. However that's not the case. Due to bad programming the image shown is constantly changing and as a result of it the automated protection is useless. For one, the primary purpose of the bot is not working if the image changes (the image that is changed is no longer protected from vandalism while it's not live, and visa versa). Please make sure that w:zh:template:Dyk does NOT change the database imagelink randomly, instead only change the visibility.

I have no interest in forcing a method, do it whichever way you like. Wether that is conditionally wrapping them in style="display: none;" or style="display: block;". Or perhaps something more advanced with JavaScript rotation. Whatever you like. Please let me know when I can enable the bot again. –Krinkle^talk 11:59, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

Is there also an equivalent for the "tomorrow" main page? Previously the bot searched these two pages:

Should be /全部 and /明天. DYK entries are updated by a bot every several hours from zh:WP:DYKC so it's hard to tell which images will be used on DYK tomorrow. This risks kinds of vandalism if someone uploads a bad image just before the bot updates the main page. Maybe you can protect images on zh:WP:DYKC to prevent this but there can be too many innocent images... Liangent (talk) 09:08, 12 March 2012 (UTC)

Sugestia poprawienia tłumacznia podpisau pod mapą tutaj. np. zwrot "Turks of Poland" znaczy "Turcy z Polski" /wzięli twierdzę/. A było odwrotnie Turcy przyszli żeby od Polaków ją wziąć itd. I suggest the following corrections to the English translation of the caption to the file here, e.g. Turks of Poland means "Polish Turks" and should read "the Poles" (les Polonais) etc.

Tippfehler

Ich hätte gerne bei File:Yak at third lake in Gokyo.jpg den Tippfehler in den Kategorien korrigiert: Statt Malangur muss es Mahalangur Himal heißen. Ich wählte beim Hochladen die falsche Dateiversion auf meinem Rechner aus. Da diese falsche Version zwischenzeitlich geringfügig (Auflösung/Beschnitt) verändert wurde, wollte ich meinen Fehler korrigieren. cascading protection

Hellow to any admin monitoring this page. I am trying to fulfill a request at en.WP's Graphics Lab (en:Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Photography workshop#Three Gorges Dam), but I am getting an error which states that I cannot upload a new version of the file File:ThreeGorgesDam-China2009.jpg because it has been transcluded onto this page, which is protected with cascading enabled. However, I don't see the file anywhere on this page, and I can't view the source at all, so I have no idea why this is happening. Is there anyone who could lend a hand? Thanks,

@Be..anyone and Steinsplitter: Logos are now served from static files managed in Wikimedia configuration. This was primarily for performance reasons, but also makes changes a lot more organised. So my tool and this page are obsolete. When wikis override their logo for celebrations etc., the individual file will still need to be protected manually. @Varlaam: Not all files in Category:2017 Puebla earthquake in Mexico City are protected. Some, e.g. File:Ciudad-de-México---Terremoto-Puebla-2017-3-cropped.jpg, are auto-protected because they are used on important pages like main page of English Wikipedia for example. I know this has no perfect solution, specially because the official specification of Bangladeshi Flag is so non-reproducible. The color specification in official law is based on a archaic dye -- which unfortunately even result in different color based on mixing medium. So, we have to rely on only source that can be traced to Bangladeshi government authority, whatever Pantone spec was submitted by Bangladeshi National Olympic committee to London 2012 Olympics. See flagspost and London Olympics Flags handbook. If we look at my updated version, which uses color specified in these sources, it looks more closer to what we actually see in Bangladesh. 2. The categories on this image should ONLY be :
   • Category:Atmospheric rivers
   • Category:Satellite pictures of mid-latitude storms

All the others are unrelated and/or too vague.

auto-protection not shown in log and upload-button is usable

After a confusion why the upload of a new file fails I saw that the file was on the List of Auto-protected files. But there is nothing in the log of the page and the button is clickable and an error only occurs after trying to finish the upload. Weissman and copyvio

File:Drew Weissman.png, which is getting a lot of views because he just won the Nobel Prize in Medicine, is copyvio: the uploader said it's taken from https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/learning/edx-covid-19-upenn-vaccine-free-online-course - and that site says nothing about suitable licensing. And I can't tag it for deletion because it's protected (as is File:Drew Weissman (cropped).png, which is also copyvio).

(Uploader's talk page also shows that he previously tried uploading a JPG of Weissman, which is probably the same image, and which was deleted in 2021 for 'No mention of free licence on source link', so it's presumably the same image.) DS (talk) 15:10, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

oh wait, it's more complicated than that: our upload was from January 2021, and the Business Insider article was from May 2021, and in June 2021, a user who has made only one edit, a) stated that the image came from BI, and b) claimed that the "original" had been taken by "Nick D'Amico of Gallantry Media".

D'Amico is a real photographer, and he's Pennsylvania-based which would have given him access to Weissman, and I still can't tag the photo properly because it's still full-protected. DS (talk) 15:49, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

Following policy, I'm attempting to contact the administrator who used @KrinkleBot for this protection edit.

On the linked page under Cascading protection, it says

Due to the widespread and powerful nature of cascading protection, its usage should be kept to a minimum. On Commons, cascading protection should only be used in rare situations where there's a consensus to do so.

I don't think there was a consensus to do so for this image. There don't seem to be any discussion topics on this page or the image page itself discussing transclusion. The broader wiki community seems better served by not having cascading protection on this image, given the lack of vandalism or edit warring. Perhaps the edit was done in error?
