Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

File:Miller projection SW.jpg[edit]

Hallo Analemma, danke für deinen Edit, aber kannst du das bitte als eine neue Datei hochladen und die ursprüngliche Version von File:Miller projection SW.jpg wiederherstellen? Dieses Bild der betreffenden Kartenprojektion wird auch in vielen anderen Artikeln verwendet, die nichts mit dem Thema Zeitzonen und Zonenzeiten zu tun haben. --Neitram (talk) 09:25, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Das war mir auch gleich nach dem Hochladen klar geworden. Meine Versuche, es zu korrigieren, schlugen aber fehl: beim Hochladeversuch der Datei unter anderem Titel erschien die Meldung, dass das wegen einer Kopie von File:Miller projection SW.jpg nicht ginge. Letztere zu löschen ging wieder nicht, denn mein Edit sei wahrscheinlich schon rückgängig gemacht. Ich wartete also auf die Meldung von jemand, dem diese unangebrachte Dopplung auch auffällt und einschreiten wird. Kannst Du das bis zum erfolgreichen Ende tun?

Danke. Du hast anscheinend Datei:Zeitzonen.jpg auf Wikipedia.de ([1]) anstatt auf Commons hochgeladen, deshalb ging es. Die andere Möglichkeit wäre gewesen, zuerst die ursprüngliche Version von File:Miller projection SW.jpg wiederherzustellen, und danach deine neue Datei auf Commons unter neuem Namen hochzuladen. --Neitram (talk) 12:47, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
