Sample.svg

{{Edit request}} When the source image is removed from the template (e.g. by CommonsDelinker), this template falls back to File:Sample.svg thanks to {{F}} (at least for .svg files). This creates a wrong impression that an image was derived from that Sample.svg, when it was not. Of course, the more prudent remedy would be to tweak CommonsDelinker, but in order to correct the already existent errors, please place the entire template into {{#if:{{{1|}}}| ... }} (or something else). Can the template somehow specify the version of the image that was used?

The template links to the File page, but does not take into account that sometimes earlier uploads to the file page are used as the source. (As an additional complicatioin, revised versions are sometimes uploaded later over the source image.) For an example, see File:ChenonceauLogisNordseite-2 (adjusted).jpg. In this case, there were already two versions on the source File page. I used the originally uploaded image to make changes and added a link to it after this template. No, the template can't; it can show many files but without specifications. When you want/need additions like a version, you can make your own link with every specification, textual description, date or timestamps and additional links whatever seems useful to you. sarang♥사랑 16:46, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Additional formatting option

It would be useful to expand the template the same way as {{Derivative versions}} has been one year ago: the file names can be of very different lenghts, while the displayed files are of the same width - the option to display the files left of the name cares for better readability and nicer appearance.

Unprotection request

While the full protection of {{Derivative versions}} had been changed to established users only, without any known disadvantage, this template is still inaccessible. I am sure the lower protection level will be satisfying as well, therefore I ask to lower this level, too.
The formatting option mentioned above is ready and tested, and I can add it as soon I am allowed to do. sarang♥사랑 08:38, 29 November 2014 (UTC)

Machine-readable format

Can this template be altered to include a machine-readable class, so bots and extensions can easily mark and recognize derivative files in the future?

e.g., on a page with {{Information}}:

"Derived from" and "derivative work"

Question: this template currently places the words "This file was derived from" on a line in the file's description page. Doesn't this imply that the file is in fact a "derivative work" (by both Commons and legal perspectives)? Because I see this template used often merely to indicate that someone, for example, created a foreign language version of an image (but changed nothing about the image proper). This doesn't result in a derivative work, and it looks to me like the label "This file was derived from" is not appropriate for such files. Could we add a line or two to the template documentation explaining how the template should be used with regard to actual derivative works? Will be glad to do this myself if no one objects... The "by" parameter meaning and usage policy

I started this discussion at COM:VPC after being pointed that using this template without "by" parameter (thus without the indication of the author of the work I based my derivative on) — that such usage would be in violation of the project licensing policies (given that the original work is not PD but under one of CC-BY free licenses).

Currently, I did not become more clear on the issue. Moreover one of the colleagues at COM:VPC suggested that "by" is intended to indicate the author of the derivative work (me in such case) while the Author field in {{Information}} in such case is for the author of the work I based my derivative work on.

So I am rather puzzled by now and asking to explain:

• What is the intended meaning of "by" parameter: the author of the derivative work or the author of the original work?
• Is it in violation of the project licensing policies to indicate by linking the original work without explicitly indicating its author(s)?

I also dare to ping two active administrators from the template edits history, the author of this tempkate and one of editors: @Yarl and Hedwig in Washington: --NeoLexx (talk) 10:32, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

PS: I'm also not sure anymore. For sure it was introduced by Sarang, as there can be multiple files stated, a single "by" can logical only indicate the derivative author of a single file.

If Sarang introduced this for the derivative author, the description states it grammatically as the original author (as the ":" separates the filename with addition fully from the previous text). However, mentioning the derivative author again should be redundant, as this template is only usable on the derivate. So I do prefer to fully remove this parameter (as we can see, really nobody knows for sure about the usage of this parameter). -- User: Perhelion 05:35, 10 June 2018 (UTC)

I am really wondering about the talk of "violation of the project licensing policies" - mentioning the original file is quite enough, there at its link everything can be seen. My addition of the "by" to the template is rather cosmetical, that it can be seen at the first glance who created the original. Often the Template:Attrib (with or without "by") is better suited.

IMHO it can be used if you like, voluntarily, it's simpler than to write e.g. {{derived from|file.jpg}} by {{{u|user}} – with the advantage that the Template:By nationalizes the word "by". Another more complicated possibility is to write {{derived from|by=:}} {{F|file1.jpg|by=user1}}, {{F|file2.svg|by=user2}}, this will be a method to mention more files from different authors. @Perhelion: I don't think that the parameter should be removed, it has its advantages; but a more precise decription in the docu may help to avoid malinterpretions. I still don't fully understand the usage of "by". Is it possible to specify multiple authors of a file – e.g., in case of file that has been uploaded by user1, but subsequently heavily modified by user2 und user3 afterwards? --Furfur ^{⁂ Diskussion} 15:56, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

Licensing

I just noted that no Creative Commons licence is displayed, if a public domain photo is retouched and uploaded with this template. Maybe, it would be good to create a similar template, which gives credit to the guy you retouched the photo. --NearEMPTiness (talk) 09:38, 5 October 2018 (UTC)

Weird break
