Borough by decade[edit]

Hi, Dan. I have noticed your busy NYC cat diffusion activities even though I've been doing less of that lately. Certainly it's important, for example, to properly treat Category:April 2011 in New York City so it can help people find pictures appropriate to their purpose, but it strikes me that nobody's doing much geographical diffusion of dated pictures. There's no cat for the Bronx in the 1970s for example. Perhaps you would be the one to find time for such a venture. Or, later in the year, maybe I will tear myself away from other activities. It's all a matter of whatever we make ourselves busy at. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:36, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's certainly something to consider. I just moved some old photos of Brooklyn to the "History of Brooklyn" category. I should see how many images from the 1970's of The Bronx and other boroughs exist. In the meantime we should consider other decades as well. ----DanTD (talk) 13:50, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. As with city by month cats, it implies a big job. Four boros plus Manhattan in several zones, each with a few century cats and as many decades as are appropriate to the pictures to be sorted. To the eager that means, jump right on it. Minor illness is not the only thing that dulls my eagerness lately for a big job. Jim.henderson (talk) 14:31, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for all of the Category updates to the photos that I've uploaded! You're so awesome. Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 18:09, 16 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My Images[edit]

I hope this is the correct place to leave you a message. I accidentally uploaded multiple copies of the same image. As you can see, I have removed the duplicates categories because that is the closest I can get to deleting them. If you have a way to delete some of the duplicates that are NOT in a category please do so From Olsen 24

So, you're strictly want the duplicates removed? I think we can discuss this with other people here. You could've brought it up on your own talk page. ----DanTD (talk) 02:15, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
File:NYCS-line-black-concourse.PNG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Might be wrong rest area number[edit]

On your photo File:I-95 NB Saint Johns County FL Rest Area-4.jpg, I was comparing it to FDOT's rest area photos on their website. I think the building in your photo looks like the one for rest area 20321 [1] not 20331 [2]. I only noticed because I just recently took a photo of a rest area in St. Johns County and was trying to figure out which rest area it was from FDOT's website. --Mjrmtg (talk) 10:22, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a big rename of the categories are in order. At some point I saw there was some distinction between the ones I took, and the ones near Exit 298, but I forgot to bring the issue up. Any chance this one might actually be "20322?" ----DanTD (talk) 12:16, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I really think this shot is from the northbound rest area 20321. I stared at your photo and the google street view photos of the southbound and northbound rest areas. Trying to spot something in the southbound that wasn't in the northbound photo, they are very similar, but in the northbound Google Street View photo [3] I can see a picnic shelter that is to the left and behind the main building just like your photo. This picnic shelter does not appear in the southbound Google Street View photo [4] --Mjrmtg (talk) 16:37, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The southbound approach to 20322 has that right curve that 20321 doesn't have. I just did a GSV of 20331 and 20332 and both are straight and have different surrounding flora. Clearly we both have images of rest areas in Saint John's County that are incorrectly blended with each other New categories and expansion are necessary in all cases. ----DanTD (talk) 16:45, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My memory of my location is unreliable, so I use a Commons:Geocoding camera. Sometimes to be sure I take the time to repeat the shot with my camera phone, which has the most reliable geotagger. Jim.henderson (talk) 11:43, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Far too often when I use my most recent cell phone to take pictures, I end up taking more than one at a time. I haven't used a geotagger yet. ----DanTD (talk) 12:38, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So, we get a bad picture with good location, and a good picture without location but with almost the same time stamp. Mix and match. But anyway, when my real camera is able to get a GPS lock, it's easy. Since it is pure GPS rather than aGPS as in the phone, a good lock in the inner city is not for sure due to steel buildings. It is highly reliable in open country. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:44, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Which geocoding camera do you recommend? I manually geotag my photos using the Geosetter program. --Mjrmtg (talk) 19:15, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
When the camera doesn't know, I use Microsoft Pro Photo Tools, now discontinued. But that only transfers information from my mind into the file. That only works when I know. The camera phone (almost any smartphone) is much more reliable, but of course it's not as good a camera. My favorite real camera is the Nikon P610 I bought used, a few months ago after losing an earlier similar Nikon at Wikiconference North America in San Diego. Outdoors, it gets a fix almost as often as the camera phone, though with usually bigger errors. Like, the next street instead of across the street. I usually adjust it manually before uploading, but that's easier if the file already has a rough location. What's wrong with the P610 is, it's big, apparently because many buyers who want GPS also want the greater power of a big zoom camera. Hmm, I should write this up properly on my user page. Category description in Skyline Drive[edit]

See User talk:Look2See1 and his block log; I didn't block him. Part of the reason for the repeated sanctions is that his style is so ideosyncretic; he added this text here (not Famartin), and I've never seen anyone else dump this kind of text anywhere else; that's a major reason why he got blocked, because he ignored or outright rejected all negative feedback, even when it consisted of blocks. Nyttend (talk) 02:20, 10 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There's a few thousand pictures. Perhaps some of our railfan friends will want to sort them topically, geographically, etc. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:20, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So many to choose from. I'll add what I can. ----DanTD (talk) 19:57, 20 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's big, all right, and a topic in which my knowledge is grossly inadequate. Instead I've been doing war books, NYC architecture, Martian geography, and other topics within my limits. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:41, 22 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Chrysler building in Brooklyn[edit]

Thanks for fixing my mistake. Would you be able to create a new properly named category for it? Please. Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 03:07, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Chrysler." Hah-hah. There was a discussion about this in October 2015, but nothing new ever came of it, other than the fact that the person who created the previous category now knows about the other one, and would've been okay with a rename of his. ----DanTD (talk) 03:16, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

International v International Harvester[edit]

I believe you renamed a bunch of pages to use "International Harvester," but there is currently a discussion about calling them just "International." It looks as if that was the name used by IHC for their products. Go HERE if you're interested. mr.choppers (talk)-en- 19:02, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Broken Promises[edit]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BrokenPromises_JohnFekner.jpg

hi dan, quick question, why did you remove south bronx from this page? john fekner

Because the exact neighborhood in the South Bronx was found, so I narrowed it down to "Crotona Park East, Bronx." ----DanTD (talk) 22:18, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I understand and accept your defining Charlotte Street as s geographically location in Crotona Park East, Bronx. All I know is when I stencilled Broken Promises/Falsas Promesas, Last Hope, Save Our Schools, Decay and Save Our School (with the help from the local young teens) from the area, they didn't play in nearby Crotona Park; they played in the abandoned buildings, streets and rubble Charlotte Street in the South Bronx.

Yeah, that category was split off from Category:Morrisania, Bronx, so I just added the South Bronx category to it, with the inevitable removal of the Morrisania category. ----DanTD (talk) 18:04, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What is the basis for categorizing this photo in Category:Changing New York? Is it the work of Berenice Abbott (in which case it shouldn't say "author unknown") or not (in which case it shouldn't be in that category). - Jmabel ! talk 05:25, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I had nothing to do with that category. But if Abbott is the author, it should be changed. ----DanTD (talk) 11:20, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just re-checked the history, you added it. And I'm confused. You say "if Abbott is the author, it should be changed." Did you mean to say "if Abbott is not the author, it should be changed"? Changing New York is Abbott's most famous series of photographs; this file page says "Author unknown or not provided." I think if we have no evidence that it is Abbott (and to me it doesn't particularly look like her work, though it could be a visual outlier) the category should be removed. - Jmabel ! talk 15:32, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it looks like I just swiped a whole bunch of categories related to the Greyhound Bus Terminal, and didn't realize the "Changing New York" category only covers the period between 1935 and 1940. If Abbott took the picture anyhow, naturally, her name should replace the "Author Unknown" line in the infobox. Otherwise, you can just remove the category completely. ----DanTD (talk) 15:45, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The only thing I see associating it with her is your edit (which was apparently a mistake) and I don't see it reproduced elsewhere on the web (which I think would be unusual for one of her photos), so I'll remove the category. - Jmabel ! talk 22:39, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Kissing room[edit]

Got some more pix of the Biltmore Room in western GCT. Very yellow light; I unyellowed them to various degrees. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:09, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Good. I was hoping to split them off in a new category, even if you didn't get any yet. ----DanTD (talk) 01:10, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
While we're at it, does this look like Vanderbilt Hall to you? ----DanTD (talk) 01:19, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Because somehow I keep thinking that's the only place where you find these chandeliers.
90% yes. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:16, 1 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
