Date localization[edit]

I saw your edit on Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Thailand where you changed, e.g.

17 July 1931

to

{{ISOdate|{{#time:Y-m-d|17 July 1931}}|lang={{PAGELANGUAGE}} }}.

I did not notice that in the {{Infobox copyright rules}} template you had also removed the <translate> ... </translate>tags. I can see the value in this case, since the translator does not see the dates at all.

I do not see any value in the body text. The translator is likely to be startled/puzzled by the clutter of template/parser function mark-up, will have to cut and paste it into the translated text window, and is likely to be unsure whether to translate the date into the local language. If they do so, when they save they will get the confusing message:

Error: Invalid time.

Easier for them to just translate the date. Any problem if I remove the mark-up from the body text? Aymatth2 (talk) 13:02, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My last edit also change English date (17 July 1931) to ISO date (1931-07-17), so the translate will unlikely to translate the ISO date? --Ans (talk) 13:08, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is it OK to also inform translators by inserting the comment like <!-- do not translate anything inside {{ISOdate}} -->?
  • The translation tool has button to copy/paste the original text in one click, so the translators not need to cut/paste manually. If this not help, so could we create a wrapper template to be used like {{TrDate|1931-07-17}} to minimize the startling template/parser function's parameters/markup?
--Ans (talk) 13:37, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That seems to be adding complexity to complexity. The translator sees:
  • Thailand has been a member of the Berne Convention since 17 July 1931 and ...
and simply translates it as
  • La Thaïlande est membre de la Convention de Berne depuis le 17 juillet 1931 et ...
But when they see:
  • Thailand has been a member of the Berne Convention since {{ISOdate|{{#time:Y-m-d|17 July 1931}}|lang={{PAGELANGUAGE}} }}<!-- do not translate anything inside {{ISOdate}} --> and ...
they have stop and think hard, and may well make a mistake. All this mark-up to avoid translating one word is not worthwhile. Aymatth2 (talk) 01:01, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So to use the simpler wrapper template like,
  • Thailand has been a member of the Berne Convention since {{TrDate|1931-07-17}} and ...
should be OK?

Yes. That looks good to me. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:30, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I started {{TrDate}} and put it into Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Thailand. Perhaps you could take a look and see if the template is o.k. – I am not an expert coder. I think it is a real improvement in the infobox, since it reduces the number of translation units. Still not sure if it buys much in the text. Aymatth2 (talk) 13:03, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
