Hello, Barosaurus Lentus!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Weird... I already added the categories in upload form using HotCat but they didn't appear... Categories added now. --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 12:55, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Belisarius' wars

[edit]

Hello, nice to meet you! It would be my pleasure to help! Copyright would not be a problem since the maps won't be identical to the originals. I've got some similar maps from Greek and English books I own, but I have not yet got my hands on Hughes' book. Send me an email with your email address, and we'll begin the exchange. Cheers, Constantine 10:13, 17 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and sorry for the delay in replying, but I've been without an internet connection for the past few days. I've started working on them (the main maps for the Gothic War and the Vandalic War, as well as a battle map for the Persian front), possibly by the end of the week they'll be done. I have one question though: do you prefer geophysical maps or outline maps? Constantine 11:25, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

At last, here's the first map: File:Gothic War - First Phase, 535-540 plain.svg. It took so long both because of holidays and because I had to redesign it a few times completely before finding a satisfactory way to fit in all the operations. Have a look, and you are welcome to any suggestions for alterations or corrections! The campaign maps for the Vandalic War and the Iberian War will hopefully be up by Sunday, real life permitting! Cheers, Constantine 20:56, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the corrections! I use Inkscape and occasionally GIMP. It's actually rather easy to make the maps, but it takes time to learn to use the many tools efficiently. There are however any number of tutorials online, which are often very helpful. Constantine 13:26, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded the Vandalic War map, the svg version seems to be a bit problematic, so for now best use the png version. I am not entirely happy with how it came out, I may make some changes in future. Constantine 20:44, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I created the Commons:WikiProject Dacia as a sister project to WP:DACIA English and WP:DACIA română to better organize, categorize and improve the quality of media and galleries related to ancient Dacia. From your contributions, I think you might be interested and maybe you wish to join and support the project. Your input is welcomed! Thanks and best regards!

Callinicumin taistelu 1.svg & Callinicumin taistelu 2.svg with editable text?

[edit]

Hello Barosaurus Lentus, I was considering creating a Spanish version of your maps in the title for the Spanish Wikipedia but I realized the files are using paths instead of real (editable) text. Would you have a version with text that could be modified? It would help me quite a lot when translating. Thank you!--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 18:45, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I uploaded new versions for both files. Is it better now? It has been so long since I last edited any SVG files and I'm not expert or anything. --Barosaurus Lentus (talk) 21:37, 14 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent! I created the new versions already, many thanks for the files. I am no expert either but it seems the Wikipedia code rendering the SVG files is less than perfect when showing real text (it is sometimes misplaced and mangled) and so it is better to show it as a path (I mention it just in case you want to revert back to the previous versions of the maps). What I usually do (not sure if there is a better way to do it) is to keep 2 texts layers in inkscape: a visible path layer and a hidden real text layer, for editing if necessary.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 06:11, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
