Frank Barrie uploads[edit]

Hello there, welcome to Wikimedia Commons. Just to check where things stand, did you take all of those photos of Frank Barrie yourself? If not, do you know who the photographer was? Thanks. --Lord Belbury (talk) 15:09, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Frank Barrie portrait.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

This original image from the production of the television series "The Optimist" has been uploaded by me as the official representative of the rights owners. It is not a derivative image and I would be grateful if you could remove this tag. Robert Brown, Pebble Bay Entertainment (TheOptimist.uk) Bosmeor (talk) 16:42, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. If you edit the image page to update the Source/Author fields so that it credits New Century Films instead of Commons user Bosmeor, you're welcome to remove the template yourself. --Belbury (talk) 16:49, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - thanks for your message. I have updated the "author" details to New Century Films, but I am not sure how to delete the tag. Would you be able to do this please? Bosmeor (talk) 19:05, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure! It's done. Do go through that permission confirmation process linked below, though, when you can. Thanks. Belbury (talk) 19:09, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will do, thanks! Bosmeor (talk) 19:14, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Source[edit]

Image copyright New Century Films 1983, uploaded by myself as their official representative (Pebble Bay Entertainment - TheOptimist.uk ) Bosmeor (talk) 16:35, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for clarifying. Can you have somebody from New Century send an email to Wikimedia Commons as described at Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team#Declaration_of_consent_for_all_enquiries, to confirm that? Likewise for the Frank Barrie photos that I mentioned back in May, at the top of the talk page.
Great to get some images like this, but Commons has to confirm that the copyright holder agreed to the CC-Attribution licence. We do occasionally run into problems where an image is uploaded on behalf of a company who thought they were just agreeing to put an image on a Wikipedia article, and didn't appreciate that they were actually releasing it under CC-Attribution. --Belbury (talk) 16:42, 17 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have just had this conversation with https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Belbury. I have uploaded this image as the official representative of the rights owner New Century Films Rob Brown - TheOptimist.uk Bosmeor (talk) 21:38, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like someone else saw that the image was claiming permission from New Century Films without having gone through the formal "evidence of permission" process. You've now removed some of the notifications from your talk page, which makes this all a little confusing to follow, but the image itself (File:Enn Reitel in The Optimist.png) is still flagged as needing evidence of permission. It will still be deleted after seven days, if it doesn't get that.
Let me know if you need any assistance resolving that. Commons:Wikimedia VRT release generator should walk you through it: you can also ask someone at New Century Films to email Commons using the template at Commons:Email templates/Consent. --Belbury (talk) 10:12, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The permissions/release email was sent yesterday, if I can come back to you for advice if needs be that would be appreciated! Bosmeor (talk) 10:20, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Of course! Leave a message on my talk page if you need to. Belbury (talk) 12:14, 19 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like that permission email never arrived and File:Enn Reitel in The Optimist.png was deleted a week later. Any idea what the problem was?
I see you've reuploaded the photo again at File:Enn Reitel.jpg, but without clear permission from the rights holder, I'm afraid that Commons will not want to risk hosting this and similar images, in case there's been a miscommunication and the images are still under copyright. Belbury (talk) 12:03, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. If you check the IMDB page for The Optimist - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085068/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 - you will see that the official website for the programme is www.theoptimist.uk If you visit that page, part of Pebble Bay Entertainment, you will see that toward the bottom of the page is a link to the Creative Commons resources being used on Wiki. I would sincerely hope that this would be enough to satisfy the requirements. The images are there with the full permission of the rightsholders. Bosmeor (talk) 12:11, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I must have missed the source link on the files. That's more than enough to satisfy requirements! Thank you for sorting this out. Belbury (talk) 12:27, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for moving the other images from The Optimist into chronological order, I couldn't find a way of doing this! Bosmeor (talk) 14:09, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, let me know if you need a hand with anything else. Belbury (talk) 14:35, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi - thanks again for your help. I am struggling (and failing) to work out how to add categories to this page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_C%27s_and_Tiaras - which has the issue flagged up. Could you advise? Thanks! Bosmeor (talk) 15:39, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To add a category you just need to name each one at the end of the article, formatted as, for example, [[Category:Channel 4 original programming]]
The easiest way to find all the categories you need is probably to look at similar article (maybe Channel Four's After Dark), edit the article and scroll down to the category list, and copy them across with whatever amendments are appropriate.
If you're wondering what other categories actually exist to put things into, one way to find them is to start typing something like Category:Musical comedy television in the search bar at the top of Wikipedia, and see whether anything gets suggested. But again, just looking for similar TV shows and copying their categories across is also an option. Belbury (talk) 16:07, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Very helpful once again, many thanks! Bosmeor (talk) 16:18, 26 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
