They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy. More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. Please link images
[edit]
Hello JSL595~commonswiki!
Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.
To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.
You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.
The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!
Thank you. Finn Rindahl 18:30, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
Hi. Because I can't seem to get the hang of editing, uploading, deleting and everything else, I seem to make a hash of everything I do in Wikiworld. Everything I do takes forever. The original photo of Dalrymple Viaduct is rubbish, so I tried to replace it with a slightly better one. Now there are 2. I don't know what to do now. All I want to do is put some useful piccies up. I'm not sure how to link images either and I'll probably mess that up. I don't know about you, but I find Wiki the most complicated place I've ever been on the web. I wish I was smart. Doh! - Doh! What's the problem, you,ve uploaded two (different) good shots of an impressive Scottish railwayviaduct - that's a good contribution. I don't know about you, but I managed to block my own IP-adress on my first day back as admin on Wikimedia Commons after a wikibreak. I wish I was smart! Keep up the good work, more images will be greatly appreciated. Regards, Finn Rindahl 23:17, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind words. However the 2 pictures are the same so I wanted to delete one of them. Once I get the hang of things I'll put some more pictures up that people want. I've got a list of Wiki articles that need pictures and I intend to get some shot. JSL595 23:38, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hm, you're obviously right about them being identical, maybe I compared with the first version... I'll delete Image:Dalrymple Viaduct2.JPG then, if you ever should upload to similar images again you could just tag the one you don't wank to keep with {{Duplicate}}. Regards, Finn Rindahl 19:44, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Hi Finnrind. Thanks for sorting that out for me. I've loaded a few more images today with no bother. I think I know where I went wrong with the viaduct image, so I guess I've learnt from my mistake. Cheers dude!JSL595 22:06, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
- Good shots, and a lot greener in Scotland than in northern Norway where I live (still winter...). I was intrigued by those seven standing stones, looked like some ancient monument. Since I'm interested in Celtic medieval history I actually looked at en:Dalmellington, only to discover they where erected in 1999. Lol. Keep up the good work! Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called JSL595. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name JSL595~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
