Emblems of Connacht

Article(s): Any articles these already appear on.

Request
Alright, I know this may seem like a tall order, but could someone please modify as many as possible of the above files containing the Connacht emblem (except the first two of course) so that the design of both the eagle and the sword-arm match those on the version of the Connacht arms in the second provided file. @Edera1970: Hi, I've split your request into smaller ones and added my notes. I am also working on this topic and if you have any more materials I would love to see them. I gave OL and IGN completely separately because they are the 2 most complicated flags I know and therefore require a lot of work in vectorization. Proposed flags of Worcestershire (2013)

Article(s): Flag of Worcestershire

Request
Could someone please create SVG files for the other three finalists from the 2013 contest organised (by BBC Hereford & Worcester) to create a flag for Worcestershire, as seen here. I'd recommend labelling them "Design 1", "Design 2" and "Design 4" respectively. Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:01, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Snow Lion Fenian: Do you have evidence to show that these designs are below UK's threshold of originality? --Designism (talk) 03:32, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@: Well, I have done a few reverse-image searches on these flags, and yet I wasn't able to find any relevant information on them (none of the other three seem to appear on the web anymore, outside of that Reddit link). But if anything relevant does come to light, I'll provide an update. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 03:45, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian: You may want to check whether you can upload design 4 to enwiki under fair use. I have created the design 4 here, but I didn't upload it to Commons, because I found the shape too "creative" under UK's copyright law. --Designism (talk) 14:38, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@: Fair enough. Although, given all the uncertainty about its status, how would you feel about uploading it to WC as an "intentionally faked flag" instead? Specifically by using the type of wavy lines from this file here (bottom-left) as templates? As I really do think that, while they bear a reasonable resemblance to the wavy shapes on "Design 4", they couldn't be mistaken for exact duplicates of them either. What do you think? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:04, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Snow Lion Fenian, I think the resemblance to the original design file is better. I regret making "intentionally faked flags" in the past... I think faked flags should be used in non article namespaces (e.g., in a user box on a user page). Designism (talk) 20:06, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Arms of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland after Richard Cromwell (eight days in May 1659)

Article(s): [[]]

Request
At present, Commons lacks a full complement of the arms used by the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland. We are missing the final arms of 1659, after the deposition of Richard Cromwell. According to George Vertue (plate XXIV here), the third seal of the Commonwealth depicted the arms without the Cromwell inescutcheon and without the normal supporters – two non-descript angels clutching vegetation (laurel crown, palm frond and laurel branch) in their place. It would be nice to have an SVG version of this coat of arms, as well as of the shield alone (File:Arms of the Protectorate (1653–1659).svg with the inescutcheon removed) and of the banner of arms (File:Standard of Oliver Cromwell (1653–1659).svg with the inescutcheon removed). It would seem from the seals that different versions of the protectorate-era arms existed, or were intended to exist, for the three different ex-kingdoms: a seal for Irish use has the harp in the second quarter (plate XXV) – so it would be good to have shields of arms and banners of arms for those variations too. Anglo-Irish royal arms of William III in spring 1689: England quartering Ireland

Article(s): e.g. en:William III of England

Request
Please create SVGs for the royal coat of arms in England and Ireland in spring 1689 using existing elements. According to Charles Oman's "Caddinets and a Forgotten Version of the Royal Arms" and Adrian Ailes's "Silent ambassadors of the State: symbols of national identity on the Great Seals and coins of the United Kingdom", the arms of William III between 13 February and 11 April 1689 (i.e. before recognition of William by the Scots Parliament) consisted of England quartered with Ireland only, without any Scottish arms, and with the Tudor dragon in place of the Stuart unicorn. Apparently this design was made into a Great Seal before becoming obsolete, and still exists on a caddinet, formerly among the royal plate collection, sold off to William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale, and reacquired by the royal collection in 1975. In simple terms, the Scottish red lion and silver unicorn must come out of the pre-Revolution arms, with the lion being replaced by a second harp and the unicorn replaced by the red dragon. Heraldic banners would also be desirable, but not essential. GPinkerton (talk) 17:44, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s)

This Visio file has extraneous elements within its text elements:

<text x="17.23" y="797.46" class="st2" v:langID="1036">
  <v:paragraph v:horizAlign="1"/>
  <v:tabList/>
  Toutes les parties

  <tspan x="31.95" dy="1.2em" class="st3">jugement </tspan>
  ?
</text>

The extraneous elements confuse SVG Translate. IIRC, SVG Translate will also object to #text nodes mixed with tspan elements. Glrx (talk) 00:06, 21 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

text in SVG (sheet index)

Request
How could I improve the readability of the text in the SVG for lower sizes (for comparison, a jpeg with similar text). --Enhancing999 (talk) 08:54, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)

Use bigger fonts. The SVG font size is 1/6 the box height (20 px / 120 px). The JPEG fonts are relatively larger. Larger fonts means some names will not fit the width; the JPEG uses two lines for some names (see 1185) and abbreviations for others (see 1126). The JPEG also uses a even larger font for the map number. Glrx (talk) 17:24, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Glrx: Thanks for your advice. I increased font-sizes and added classes for longer names (>12 chars) and sheet numbers.
I hesitate to add more abbreviations. I split the "bis"-numbers on two lines, but left the name of 1185 on 1 line. Enhancing999 (talk) 20:08, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I split text in 2 lines where possible and added a different text size for short names.
Font-sizes are now (in v 0.51): 35px (sheet number), 23px (longer names, 12 and more characters), 40px (short names, up to 6 characters), 30px (others). Enhancing999 (talk) 19:55, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Enhancing999:
I think you have a reasonable index. Congratulations on using classes. I would have kept the names at a single font size (like the JPEG version) to avoid making Basel appear more important than Sissach, but that is a personal preference. Also, the lines at the margins are 1/2 width; that can be fixed by offsetting and enlarging the size by a few pixels.
You can add a feature to the red dots. Instead of
<circle cy="1020" cx="1200" fill="red" r="8" id="Bern_Swiss_grid_initial_point_zero" />
do
<circle cy="1020" cx="1200" fill="red" r="8" id="Bern_Swiss_grid_initial_point_zero">
  <title>Bern Swiss grid initial point zero</title>
</circle>
It will not show up on WP, but it will show up when the SVG is viewed directly
Glrx (talk) 20:52, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I noticed my preferred font-size varies based on the png size. I tried to improve the positioning, fixed the borders and added the title feature. Enhancing999 (talk) 07:52, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, I made a request for this on COM:GL/M#Create a SVG version of File:Topo 25 sheets orig.jpg. It would be useful to add a background map, as mentioned there. And to have a version with the numbers only. Yann (talk) 21:01, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Will do a number only one later. Also one without the (partial) digital-only tiles (some barely cover anything at all, currently we only have "Samnaun Ost"). Enhancing999 (talk) 07:52, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Added it above. Also one for 1:50'000. Somehow the font looks better locally than rendered as png. Enhancing999 (talk) 14:35, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I just want to understand, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 18:57, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Blur: to fake the drop shadow.
Font: for the SVG display reasonably on Windows and Mac which don't natively have Liberation Sans.
White circle: to make the background opaque so the text can be seen if overlaid on a dark background.
Text boxes: I don't understand what you mean – how else would text be displayed?
@Goran tek-en: cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 21:34, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Cmglee
  • Blur can be some troublesome rendering and it is to my understand also using quite a lot of computer power to be rendered, at least when you open it in Inkscape. Do you think those shadows are that important for the image, for me it would work very well without, or have you tried to use Radial Gradient.
  • Yes fonts are a difficult part here but this might help. I guess you already know this list.
  • Why don't just make a rectangle with the same size as the document.
  • In Inkscape you can just click with the text tool and start writing, you don't have to draw a box. When you have a box you will limit the texts to be within it. Sometimes when a system uses another font it can render larger/longer and then the box cut it and force to a new line or not being visible at all depending on the size of the box.
When I draw in svg I always keep it as simple as possible, everything you add which will complicate things will be something that might give you problems ahead. We never know how our images will be used or rendered, so we have no control over that. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 13:33, 31 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Goran tek-en: Good you've found your way of doing things. I write SVG files by hand or with a script, so, for example, tend to use a lot of use to reduce repetition of common code. It may look complicated to you, but it keeps things consistent and to me, easier to maintain.
  • The shadow helps convey that the shapes should be interpreted as 3D projections, so I'd say they're important.
  • I add Liberation Sans to recent diagrams but it would be too much effort to refresh my back catalogue and confirm that they work as intended. Helvetica and Arial have been tested to be properly substituted on rsvg.
  • It will then have to updated when the viewBox changes. As my browser has a white background, failure to do so is hard to detect.
  • As I write SVG files by hand or with a script, I'm unaware of Inkscape peculiarities. I believe text and tspan tags are the standard way of outputting text in SVG.

@Felix QW: yes you are right, text should be embedded - in this case i just converted vectordata from pdf-file - beside that, a complex file like this is difficult to render for wiki-software- its easier to handle a file like this for articles, but its expensive e.g. for translating --Mrmw (talk) 16:42, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mrmw: Thank you, I have already started exchanging files. What is already there is good, but I looked at the photos very carefully and noticed a few more details that I missed earlier.
  1. The border of the black circle extends to 1/3 of the height of the bottom and top bars, but the white emblem is currently a good size
  2. The dots are black and located on a white rectangle. The rectangle has the same length as the bottom of the roof. If adding it causes the roof to be too high, shorten the tower. There is an oval in the middle of the rectangle, the oval is 1/5 the length of the rectangle. 2 dots are halfway between the oval and the end of the rectangle. One dot is about 1/10 the width of the rectangle.
  3. Additionally, I would like to have an isolated emblem to use in the article about emblems.
I also noticed such details, but they don't seem important to me and adding them is at your discretion
  1. The mosque itself is a little wider, the floor almost touches the upper top of the 5th strip counting from the bottom of the outer star.
  2. Flags stick out from the very bottom of the towers.
  3. On the towers, there are rectangles that are not adjacent to the towers, same as the first version, but at a different height, halfway between the floor and the roof.
The six-pointed star is clearly visible, and the fact that King Ali replaced the swords makes sense, since swords were the emblem of his predecessor Amanullah. Thank you for your patience and great work. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 20:06, 6 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Swiãtopôłk: tried to fullfill your wishes - i mentioned the six-pointed-star, because you called it eight-pointed first time ✓ Done --Mrmw (talk) 05:50, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrmw: Thanks, it's perfect. Just one more request, for the emblem in a separate file, preferably white with thin black edges. I want to add it to the article about the emblem of Afghanistan. Swiãtopôłk (talk) 08:49, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Cfsprt and Chifonr: Chifonr uploaded HP Spectre.png saying its from hp-website but without link to file/image/page - is it a coincidence that this logo matches with the movie spectre? there is a svg-logo for this movie - i was not able to find a hp-image with this logo - instead i found images with a different more simple logo:
--Mrmw (talk) 19:25, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Mrmw Yes it was clearly an unintentional mistake. The links your show are indeed those of the 'real' HP Spectre logo. Unfortunately I have not been able to find a single image file of the logo on the internet, so I guess you or another SVG expert will have to draw it yourselves without a direct reference. Perhaps if you know the exact font type they use in File:HP Pavilion (2016).svg (same as in Spectre logo) you can easily create it. --Cfƨprt (talk) 19:18, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Correct the problem with this SVG file

This is regarding File:Bixby logo.svg. Someone uploaded an updated version of the logo (archived link) but this was reverted because the image did not render properly on the Wikipedia article (the icon on the left was white and almost invisible).
That SVG displays fine in my browser (Firefox) though, so I downloaded it and tried to upload this file as a new version, but the Commons uploader showed a blank preview and a resolution of 0x0, so something's up with it.
I opened the file in InkScape, but again it does not render properly: the icon on the left isn't there at all. Yet it shows up fine when I open it in Firefox.
So there's definitely something wrong with this SVG, and I'm not experienced enough with SVG. Can anyone try and fix this file so the icon shows up properly? And then upload it as a new version of File:Bixby logo.svg?

@Mrmw: Thanks. Could you increase size of images "preview"? It's default size of image at file page. Eurohunter (talk) 21:43, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Eurohunter: dont know what you are talking about - svg-files are scalable, why should i change resolution of files? 440px x 400px seems to be nice at filepage --Mrmw (talk) 21:48, 8 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrmw: I know they are scalable and the full size is 2048x2048, but Swedish Post logo has 600x600 at file page preview or Haas has 922×814. Looks like Williams has even its maximum size of 3356×2543 same as it's maximum size possible to render. Eurohunter (talk) 19:40, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Eurohunter: dont get it, you mix png and svg-files, the question about image-size and resolution is completely different - pls explain exactly what is your problem or what you want to do - perhaps have a look at COM:SVG --Mrmw (talk) 20:35, 9 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Eurohunter: SVG files are infinitely resizable. That means when you use it, you can specify its size to be arbitrarily small or arbitrarily large, and Wikipedia can still render everything nice and clean. Here is an example. --Designism (talk) 15:03, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrmw: @: No. I mean something else and it doesn't matter if it's svg or png file. Anyway I will show you example of Swedish Post trademark. The file has full 2048×2048 at [11] but if if you look at page File:Swedish Post trademark.svg there is just 600x600 preview, and you can increase this value to 900x900 etc. I don't know how to change it. Eurohunter (talk) 21:50, 10 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Generally, SVG files will be displayed on the File: page at the size specified in the width and height attributes. The File:Swedish Post trademark.svg specifies those values to be 600 by 600 pixels, and that is what is displayed on the File page. SVG files that do not specify the width and height will be displayed at a width of 512 pixels. That means that some files are displayed at a small size. For example, some SVG icon files may be displayed at 64 by 64 pixels. See, for example, File:Crystal128-player-play.svg.
If the width is large, then the File page will scale the image down. For example, File:2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.svg is 2,199 × 1,478 pixels, but it is displayed at a width of 800 pixels.
If you click through to display the SVG directly in a browser, then the browser will display the image at the size specified by the width and height attributes. If those attributes are not set but there is a viewBox attribute, then the browser will scale the image to fit on the screen. That is a nice feature in many situations, but it often means the image will not pan and zoom. There is not a clear best practice.
The Commons File page will be reasonable if the width is in the 400 to 800 pixel range. I would not edit an SVG file merely to change its displayed image size. The Bass Hunter logos have a width of 400 pixels and are large enough for a reasonable display. The logos do not have much detail, so even a display size of 160 pixels is OK.

@Eurohunter: Perhaps you can also tell us what exactly you want to do with these files, rather than what you want? After all, if you try to use the file on any Wikimedia website, the preview size of the file shouldn't matter — you can always specify the thumbnail/image size. --Designism (talk) 23:28, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

SVG flag construction sheet

Request
Please, fix the proportions of the SVG Construction sheet according to the actual numbers written on the image.

In addition, if you can:

  1. SVG Flag (civil flag) needs its code to be cleaned up.
  2. PNG Flag (war flag) needs to be vectorized.
