DPLA bot and Vietnam War photos

Hi Dominic, is there a way to direct DPLA bot to upload more National Archives photos of the Vietnam War? I am almost done categorising all the uncategorised Vietnam War photos. regards Mztourist (talk) 10:39, 12 May 2021 (UTC)

@Mztourist: Thank you for all your work! Have you looked at their catalog and have specific collections you'd like to see uploaded? The previous uploads were not really focusing on any content area in particular, more just trying to get some portion of their 100 million images (!) in, but I can certainly look into uploading specific requested collections. Dominic (talk) 14:51, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
Hi Dominic, thanks for your response. Yes I've been working my way slowly through the National Archives, but then learnt of DPLA Bot and realized that could do most of the hard work for me, so I just have to categorize and crop. Basically I'd like every image from Vietnam between 1960 and 1975. Most of the images seem to be contained in Record Group 127: Records of the U.S. Marine Corps, 1775 -, Series: Black and White Photographs of Marine Corps Activities in Vietnam, 1962 - 1975. I'd also like Series: General Photograph File of the U.S. Marine Corps regards Mztourist (talk) 15:24, 13 May 2021 (UTC)

Empty image

Please take a look at File:Boats at Dock - DPLA - 4ac1a16980747ae4d62ea8ae09c00e47 (page 2).jpg. It is empty. Or complete white. Thanks. -- sk (talk) 10:44, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

@Johndewees: Do you have any insight into whether this white JPG is an error or meaningful? It appears in the original Ohio Memory record like this. Dominic (talk) 00:12, 21 May 2021 (UTC)
Sure looks like it was meant to be a scan of the back side of the print, but it turned out pure white, which isn't too useful. Exists that way at the source. Carl Lindberg (talk) 13:56, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

This was a hacky solution while working on this digitization project. The scanning of the materials occurred before I was hired, and for postcards that were reproductions, they only bothered to scan the front. Due to how CONTENTdm handles simple/complex digital objects, I needed to add a second image to these single images so they would be handled properly on upload. In this case it was including a uniform white image as a second "page" of the complex digital object. Again this wasn't an ideal solution but the best I was able to do at the time, hence the strange handling as those images were passed along to Wikimedia Commons. --Johndewees (talk) 16:26, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Here is the next. File:Water works tower - DPLA - 3e6e23911fef7e49c965888cc0bb406c (page 2).jpg Should we delete all this empty image files? -- sk (talk) 04:35, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
Next: File:Boats at Dock - DPLA - 4ac1a16980747ae4d62ea8ae09c00e47 (page 2).jpg --sk (talk) 04:48, 13 June 2021 (UTC)
@Stefan Kühn: Thanks, I do think we should delete them. Johndewees is the librarian from the institution these actually came from, so that is why I was pinging him. Based on his reply, it seems like this isn't a bot error per se, since these are the way the files were put in their catalog. But clearly they are not meaningful components of the original work. I can put a speedy request on these you saw already, but I'd like to also see if John can help us identify all of them to make sure we get them all. Dominic (talk) 23:04, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Just commenting to say I think this is right. The NARA copyright evaluation is clearly correct with respect to the copyright of the photo, but often they do not actually take into account any copyrights in the subjects depicted in the photo. Dominic (talk) 18:08, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

Vietnam War photos

Hi Dominic, I don't see that DPLA bot has added any new Vietnam War photos. Are you able to direct it to do so? regards Mztourist (talk) 04:58, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

@Mztourist: Sorry about that. It was a little more complicated than I thought, and I have been working on some other new features at the same time. The main complication is just that the things we would want to filter on (such as the record group or series number) are not fielded data in the DPLA aggregation. I filed a request with the DPLA team to have better filtering options, so we can select what we want to upload based on content considerations. Previously, they were just being uploaded in default sort order based only on filters like "file is a JPG image file between 1 and 100 MB" or something like that. I'm still waiting to hear more about the timeline on improved filtering. Dominic (talk) 17:06, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
thanks Dominic, I thought it might be something more complicated. best regards Mztourist (talk) 03:00, 14 July 2021 (UTC)

Congratulations! Task 2 was approved. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:21, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

DPLA bot tasks

Hi Dominic, I have added your bot task as well as a link to your modelling page as follows [1]. Please have a look to make sure it is correctly reflected. Keep up the great work and thanks for updating to a single edit per page, makes the recent changes with bots edits shown so much more readable. --Schlurcher (talk) 07:46, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

@Schlurcher: Thanks so much! I appreciate that you noticed the change. Honestly, it took me a while to figure out "wbeditentity", as you have to get the exact right JSON structure for claims and qualifiers. I will likely finish this first bot run that was adding the first three properties to the 2+ million DPLA uploads, and then start with a new set of more complex properties (like title, institution, source). If you have any thoughts on some of these types of statements, feel free to comment on the modeling page. Thanks! Dominic (talk) 23:22, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

San Antonio Express, Vol. 39

I was just looking over the files in Category:San Antonio Express Vol. 39 but looking at the image in volume 39, it seems like volume XLIV (49). volume 46 seems like volume XLVI (56). Volume 47 seems like XLVII (57). Volume 48 seems like XLVIII (58). Does it seem like the file names and categories need to be changed? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 03:48, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

49 and 50 do seem correct but confirming the correct volumes would put them in correct date order in my mind. Thanks! -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:48, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

Abilene Daily Reporter

A separate issue but I think the Abilene Daily Reporter volumes really belong to separate newspapers (which would explain why the volume and dates don't match). According to en:Abilene Reporter-News, there was a weekly Abilene Reporter, a morning daily The Morning News, and an afternoon daily Daily Reporter. For example, volume 1 (1922) is actually the first volume of the Abilene Morning Reporter, volume 6 (1914) is from the Daily Reporter, volume 28 (1907) is from The Abilene Reporter as is 29 and others. Should they be split and renamed? It would help make sense of the various papers and give a better idea of what is there versus what is missing. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 08:25, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

@Ricky81682: : Thanks so much for combing through these. I just wanted to say that I am looking into this report and the one above. I'll try to route your comment to the original institution and see if they will update their metadata. This may take some time, but I would like know if any identifiers and URLs are going to change, in addition to the titles, and it'll be a bot job to rename and update metadata on this many files. Dominic (talk) 15:48, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Carrollton Chronicle images

The images for Carrollton Chronicle papers seem incorrect to me. For example, File:Carrollton Chronicle (Carrollton, Tex.), Vol. 16, No. 44, Ed. 1 Friday, September 3, 1920 - DPLA - 7ef097643da77d2cfe523ef2723a6b70 (page 1).jpg and the other 7 pages are all actually Vol. 16, No. 52. The dates are correct at least. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 08:18, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

Photos from Swedish TV Nobel shoot with John Mather

Hi Dominic. I found these really nice photos you uploaded of when Swedish TV visited John Mather at Goddard Space Flight Center. There seems to be a lot more photos available in the series, see [2], and some of them would be better illustrations of the reporter Thomas von Heijne. What is the best way to get them onto commons? Should I upload manually and mimic your file description or do you have tools that could aid in the process? Thank you! Belteshassar (talk) 19:28, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

@Belteshassar: These are all uploaded via an automated process using software we developed at the Digital Public Library of America for member institutions like the US National Archives. The ones previously uploaded were selected mostly at random (or not prioritized on the actual content, at least), and there are over 100 million NARA images, so most are not yet in Commons. I could queue up the whole series that this comes from to be prioritized for upload by the bot, but it might not run for a couple of months, especially since DPLA has a small staff and a winter holiday coming up.
