First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

ARG v COL lineup[edit]

Hey, the lineup at File:ARG-COL-2011-07-06.svg is incorrect. Refer to this under "tactica" to see it. Most notable errors are Moreno twice and Guarin in the incorrect position, among others. Thanks. Digirami (talk) 03:11, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Found more errors. This time with the Ecuador v. Paraguay match. Ecuador used a 2-4-4 formation, and you created a pic with them using a 3-4-4 formation. The main error is Mendez's location; he should be situated in the center midfield between Valencia and Noboa. And once you do that, switch Noboa and Castillo's places. Additionally, Benitez is the RCF and Caicedo is the LCF.

Hello. First of all, excuse me for my english. I'm the peruvian user Fvmeteo [1] and I'm writting you because the image File:URU-PER-2011-07-04.svg is a little bit wrong. In that match, Advíncula was the right winger and Yotún was the left one. Balbín was the defensive midfielder. Guevara (in the rigth) and Cruzado (in the left) were the central midfielders. In conclusion, Advíncula must be instead of Balbín; Yotún instead of Advíncula; Balbín instead of Guevara; Guevara instead of Cruzado; and Cruzado instead of Yotún. Besides the mistakes Fvmeteo pointed out earlier today, there are also some changes to be made in the Uruguay line-up, please be sure to check Conmebol's report (here). Just in case, Pereira played on the right with Caceres on the left so you should change one for the other. Same goes with Perez-Lodeiro and for the forwards, from left to right, the line-up should be Cavani - Suárez - Forlán. Finally, I would appreciate it if you could add a "M. " before "Pereira", taking into account that there are two Pereiras in Uruguay, Maximiliano Pereira and Álvaro Pereira. Changes would be very much appreciated. But there is a problem with the conmebol formations: they appear before the match had started, so sometimes are wrong. There are obvious mistakes: for example, in Chile-Perú, Carmona was the right back, no the left central back! Anyone who saw the match knows that. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.
