Hello, Rvancopp!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi Ruedi,

That's an interesting image of the first overhead crane. I'm sure it probably is the first crane, but it would be very useful to know the date of it. It just can't be 1810s - the technology is too far advanced for that time. Is the maker's plate readable in the original book?

There's also an issue with copyright on it. It's usually best to upload these under PD-old, assuming it really is old enough. It's difficult for you to claim copyright on scanning such an image, as most jurisdictions wouldn't recognise this as a sufficiently new work to do so (UK would, US wouldn't). It's thus difficult to enforce such a copyright and, to be honest, I don't think it's quite in the spirit of Commons to scan an image because it's PD, then to put your own copyright onto it! Getty Images et al. are keen on doing this and it's something that I always try to resist when they do it, so I wouldn't ever do it myself.

Could I also ask what the source is? I'm guessing you work for Demag? Is this a published boook, or some in-house stuff? Andy Dingley (talk) 15:36, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andy: I am really, really new at this sorry for the problems I caused. I work for Demag and the picture is from my office. It's a really old picture from our company that dates bac over 80 years. This is not a published book just an old picture. You are right if I use a magnifing glass the date is 1875 on it. At the time Demag was called L.Stuckenholz in the town of Wetter Germany. If you would be able to help me a little I sure would appriciate it.

Ruedi.

Not even sure if you will see this reply. My email is rvancopp@yahoo.com

Hi Ruedi, sorry for not replying earlier but I've been stuck swatting clueless idiots.
Welcome to Wikipedia. It sucks, but it's still basically a good idea.
It's very nice to have someone else here with a technical background. Don't worry about the copyright gubbins and the templates flying in all directions. That's just Wikibollocks. It's complicated and there's a lot of it, but don't worry about it.
Wiki Commons doesn't give a damn about accuracy, but it does care obsessively about copyright. Mostly there are three ways to deal with this:
 • You took a photo. Stick a CC-by-sa licence on it.
 • You scanned an ancient book. Make sure it's either anonymous, or the person listed as author died 70+ years ago. Then use PD-old
 • It's new and not yours. This needs to go through OTRS. Send yourself an email at work, reply to it on the email equivalent of headed notepaper and it's sorted.
Most of techie stiuff here is actually pretty well documented and sometimes you can even find it (learn to used Advanced Search and turn on the other namespaces though). Otherwise ask. We love to be asked and are usually pretty helpful.
Then note that everything is different between Commons and Wikipedia. (Wikipedia sucks far more.)
You're fortunate in that steam engines and old engineering is generally one of the better parts. Most people editing there are out of their teens and have some sort of clue. We're not always right, but we recognise that others aren't always right either and don't much care either way. Throw up stuff that's broadly useful and it will get squirreled away wherever it fits best. No-one cares if it was first uploaded upside down to an article about Prince Charles, we just sort it out and move on. Content is appreciated, especially when it's obscure stuff that no-one else has access to.
Post and discuss stuff on talk: pages. They don't bite, dialogue is very much appreciated. Be grateful it's old engineering, not Balkan politics (just like you'd expect) or Romanian aero-engineering (I don't want to talk about that).
Like I said, welcome. Despite appearances, your efforts so far are well regarded and welcomed. Andy Dingley (talk) 22:56, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Pay attention to copyright
File:AC_Motor_with_sliding_rotor-scheme.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

OTRS job. Clearly it's Demag's property, so if Ruedi could please learn how to jump through that particular OTRS hooop, it's not really that bad. Nothing needs to get deleted or all shouty.
An issue on copyright (big stuff, pay attention):
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that is re-usable by anyone for encyclopedic content. It can store files too.
Wiki Commons is not just the filestore for Wikipedia. Instead it's a public repository of media content. This content is re-usable by anyone, for anything (if it isn't, it can't come here). Not just Wikipedia, but anything. This includes using these images on billboards with "Demag sucks" written across them.
So when you're uploading, think first as to where to upload to. If you're happy to throw into into the intawebsphere, then stick it on Commons (I'd suggest the CC-by-sa licence). If you want to illustrate an article, but you're not quite so ready to relinquish all rights to it, then consider uploading to just Wikipedia instead. That gets it into the encyclopedia, but doesn't need to give everyone quite such free rein. Ask for more details. Andy Dingley (talk) 23:05, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to load the JPG again. As indicated above this is the material of Demag and I own the rights to it. I am still new at this and only hope I did right this time. I am trying to learn but I can be time limited. If I did it wrong could one of you nice guys help out a little and let me know what I need to do to fix it. I just want to help out really not trying to be a pain, bt I really think the JPG helps explain how a sliding rotor works.Rvancopp (talk) 15:43, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
