First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Is the alleged copyright violation about the brand name showing in the products or does somebody suspect the image being stolen? In first case: Finnish law doesn't forbid taking pictures of products you've bought and using them non-commercially. In second case: I shot the image in question myself at home. As proof I can show some other shots I took on the same background that day? --Suviko 20:06, 17 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
It would be great if you could answer in my talk page next time - just click on my name and then the tab "discussion" and add some text, or click on the word "discussão" next to my name and add some text :). In this way, the person you are talking to will get a notice that there is a new message waiting for them.
The problem with your photo is that it is in violation of Commons:Derivative works. Everything that is uploaded to Commons must be published under a free license which includes the possibility to distribute the file for commercial use. As per your own definition of the Finnish law, the photo is only allowed for non-commercial use. You can read more about that in Commons:Licensing.
If you have any other question, don't hesitate and ask me ;). Cheers PatríciaR discussão 11:31, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I chatted with the fi-Wikipedia people at IRC and they explained what's the deal with brands in products. The practice in the Wikipedia I contribute to (fi) is that you keep conversations at one page where they orginated instead of answering to the other person in their comment page so the comment appears in the right context and shows the discussion's history in one location. --Suviko 09:22, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, ok, different wikis, different ways :). Good that it was all cleared out for you. I sometimes pop in the #wikimedia-commons IRC channel, otherwise I am quite frequently at #pt.wikibooks or #wikipedia-pt if you want to ask me anything else more directly. Cheers! You uploaded this image which you claim to be your own work. On the upload page you agreed to place it under a Free license but did not specify which one. Please do so by replacing the {{OwnWork}} tag with a suitable copyright tag. Rüdiger Wölk 00:00, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

unfree images[edit]

Hello Suviko, all images on commons must have a free licence, images like Image:VanhojenTanssit.JPG with a non-commercial copyright status are not allowed. Please see Commons:Licensing for more information. Thank you. --GeorgHH 16:22, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
