Template:WLM finalist or winner image

Not sure who is looking after the template {{WLM finalist or winner image}}. Posting here in the hope that someone can pass the query onto the right person.

As you can see on File:Kilchurn Castle at sunrise.jpg, this template when used for WLM 2019 generates a bright red wikilink that goes to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2019. But that's not a good place to send people, as it's an organiser's landing page from which it's very difficult to find the winning images for that year. Anyone clicking on the link presumably wants to see the winning images, so it would be much better to go to Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 winners.

If this is amended, could it please be done for all languages, including en-gb as well as just en. MichaelMaggs (talk) 12:09, 11-12-2019 (UTC)

@MichaelMaggs: This could use a broader redesign, and probably a year-specific template. I would be happy to consider such design - but am not the best person to make one :) If anyone has some energy, please! This kind of conversation may be better placed on the mailing list by the way. Results page

Don't you think that the link to the results page should be somehow emphasized and placed near the top of the main page of the contest? Not just one of many links in the box at the bottom of the page like it was in previous years. Also placing results of all national contest on one huge gallery page doesn't seem to be a good idea. Such a page is loaded very slowly. --jdx Re: 14:24, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

Do you have a specific alternative organization in mind? Effeietsanders (talk) 23:27, 13 February 2020 (UTC)

I would like to ask to add an outlink for monuments of class A in Switzerland to the government database. It seems that all objects in the national inventory have a government page with the same identifiers, e.g. https://heritage.toolforge.org/api/api.php?action=search&format=html&srcountry=ch&srid=9676 could link to https://api.geo.admin.ch/rest/services/kgs/MapServer/ch.babs.kulturgueter/9676/extendedHtmlPopup which would be quite useful. I hope you can add that. Best --hroest 16:43, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Support needed

Hi, I am from Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in India organizing team. We were discussing about requesting three kinds of support from international team.

  1. Previous years, we could't spend much time on promotion and advertisement of the event. From this year, we would like to work on it. Is there any way that international team can support us in this area?
  2. To reach mobile users, WLM should have an user-friendly app. There is one for Italy, which is live on Google Play Store. Can the international team develop/fork such app for all countries, so that we can reach more participants?
  3. Can we start thinking about embedding Wikidata generated maps on our Commons event page for better visualization of the location and basic data of the monuments, or may be have option for uploads from there?

I understand that, #2 and #3 might take some time and effort, but if WLM international team can invest some resources there, that would be helpful for us to better organize the events. Thanks, -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 13:09, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

I thought if you have coordinates of all monuments #3 is pretty much automatic, see for example how we have done this in the Russian Wikivoyage: voy:ru:Культурное наследие России/Московская область/Подольск (just one specific city) generates this map. We have the coordinates manually inserted on the page, but if the coordinates of all your monuments are in Wikidata I guess they can be read from there automatically.--Ymblanter (talk) 13:59, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: , thanks for the links. Is there any documentation by which we can replicate this for our workflow? Also, {{Geogroup}} helped to get similar kinds of maps, but currently its not working after the tool url has shifted from toollabs to toolforge. --Bodhisattwa (talk) 16:01, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
I do not think you need any special tools, just copying the template should work but I will ping @Atsirlin: in case he knows more useful details. I do not think we have documentation though, sorry for this.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:44, 16 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi Bodhisattwa Thanks for the message. Replying point-wise;
  • I request to elaborate and be more specific. If you are looking for finances, WMF would be able to help. If you are looking for expertise, you can post a message on WLM mailing list to gather some ideas from other organizers. Alternatively, if you are looking for help regarding social media, this group on Facebook could be of help. Let us it is anything else.
  • There is a proposal to integrate WLM into Wikimedia Commons app, part of the larger Commons app development. We have requested for an update from the team working on this, and there will be one soon.
  • I hope Ymblanter's response helped, at least to extent. The International Team hasn't thought about this, I am eager to see what Atsirlin has to say regarding this, and explore possibilities.

How many images can i upload for the competition ?

Manoj Shumsher Bhattarai (talk) 08:19, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi Manoj Shumsher Bhattarai, in general, there is no limit to the amount of images you can upload: I know of several users that uploaded +1000 images for WLM per competition year. I would advise however, that you be selective and only upload your best shots! Ciell (talk) 13:00, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

WLM Iran

Hello WLM. I'm Amir Pashaei an architectural photographer from Iran. I photographed a lot of pictures from Iran's heritage since last year.I nominated some of them for Featured picture candidates and 37 of them now Featured .some of the best of them didn't uploaded because I hoped to winning prize this year and wait for WLM. But I realized WLM Iran's organizer have decided to not participate this year. But they didn't announced this decision in the WLM Iran's Instagram page. I Consulted with Wilfredor He said I can Participate in holding WLM In Iran. and I (Pashaei) would help and take care of everything Except for evaluating the images. If my helping in holding has problem I can find volunteers. Is there any hope that this will happen? Can I participate my pictures in WLM? best regards Amir Pashaei

Hi Amirpashaei,
I hope you've got the answer through the mailing list already, but to answer you question here as well: yes, Iran will be joining in WLM 2020. You can enter by uploading images between September 7th and October 6, more information is on the WLM Iran information page. Ciell (talk) 13:00, 13 September 2020 (UTC)

How to add files ?

Hi.

Am I too stupid to find how simply upload files for WLM20 ?

Where is the button? Was it on the banner (don't see it anymore)? I think we should be clearer and have a button "Upload files to WLM20" on the UploadWizzard page, don't you think? If new contributors don't find in a few clicks they'll give up...

Commons main page: nothing; Commons:Upload: nothing; Special:UploadWizard: nothing; Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2020: nothing; wikilovesmonuments.org: nothing...

I have to type in the search bar, click Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 to click Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2020/Participating countries, search my country, click the link going to the UploadWizzard, click on the banner the link "How to participate" sending to Commons:Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in France where, at least, I can find 2 buttons: "Building" or "Object". So, I click "Building", and I'm back to the UploadWizzard. No more info... If I don't look close at the browser's adress (...Special:UploadWizard&campaign=wlm-fr...) nothing indicates I'm on the right page for WLM20 uploads...

It's not very simple and not very clear...

So I've uploaded 10 files and add them with Cat-a-lot in category:Images from Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in France and category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in France because it's written we can't add manually the template and I didn't find another manner... If someone can help...

Thanks lol LW² \m/ (Lie ² me...) 00:01, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

lol LW² \m/ (Lie ² me...) 00:01, 25 September 2020 (UTC)

@Llann Wé²: Good to hear that you want to participate! It depends on the country you want to participate in. The banner should link to the landing page for the country that you're currently based in. That page should give instructions for that country. All landing pages are linked from this international overview page (if any are missing, feel free to ping us).
Manually adding a category does not work. However, you can add the template manually, if you want (as long as you also identify the monument in the way relevant for that country). That is a bit more advanced, and there's usually less instructions for that. Effeietsanders (talk) 01:09, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
@VIGNERON: perhaps you can respond to the France-specific concerns? Effeietsanders (talk) 01:12, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
Thanks a lot @Effeietsanders: I don't see the banner anymore. I just think it's not easy for new users to find the good page and I'm not a new user. It's a long way of clicks to reach it. It was the same in '14 the last time I've participed and all my uploads were not counted in the WLM14 that's why I did not participate from '15 to '19... I'll add manually the template, let's see...
lol LW² \m/ (Lie ² me...) 01:33, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
Vigneron: I think the buttons at least with an English interface look at bit odd on your landing page. Twice the same text? May be translation problem. I replaced the English button description with the French text for now.
Llann Wé²: I'm not sure why you were somehow sent to the general upload wizard. If you had used the button on the French landing page, it should have sent you to the wlm-fr upload module, which should have added the template automatically. Maybe Vigneron can figure out what went wrong, or maybe you used a different button/link? If you're on the WLM specific upload wizard, it should actually show a clear template on top (I see it here). Effeietsanders (talk) 07:54, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
Je suis par contre surpris et un peu inquiet quand tu dis « nothing indicates I'm on the right page for WLM20 uploads... ».
@Effeietsanders: thanks for noticing that, I copy-paste the button and never checked the translation in English, sorry about that, it's fixed now.
Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 08:27, 25 September 2020 (UTC)
Hello @VIGNERON:
My bad...
Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 08:55, 26 September 2020 (UTC)
@VIGNERON: merci, je me coucherai moins bête !
Bonne continuation lol LW² \m/ (Lie ² me...) 03:05, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

Register my country in the contest

Hello, I could like register my country in the contest, but i don´t find the formulary or link for do it, could you please help me. My country is Venezuela.

@Corrispo: Thanks for your interest. Some instructions/documentation is available here. Please note that organizing WLM requires a (small) team, and is not something you can do all by yourself. It's probably best to get in touch with the organizers of the 2017 edition in Venezuela. @Oscar .: could you help Corrispo on their way? Courtesy ping for KCVelaga. Effeietsanders (talk) 22:30, 24 September 2020 (UTC)
@Corrispo: Please drop me an email at Special:EmailUser/KCVelaga - we can take it forward from there. Also, Lodewijk suggested, getting in touch with previous organizers would be helpful. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 05:04, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

Local monuments in the Canary Islands

Hi, I've already asked this on IRC and elsewhere off-wiki but haven't managed to find a good solution. In the Canary Islands there are quite a few locally listed monuments that aren't in BIC. Two particular examples that I've just uploaded photos for are Category:Parque Cultural La Zarza (see http://www.cabildodelapalma.es/portal/contenedor_ficha.jsp?seccion=s_floc_d4_v1.jsp&contenido=1764&tipo=1&nivel=1400&codResi=1 for the BOE, it's also [1] and has a BIC of the Canary Islands ID (P7006) value) and Category:Salinas de Fuencaliente (a site of special interest, see [2]). I gather that these aren't eligible for Wiki Loves Monuments since they are not listed at es:Anexo:Bienes de interés cultural de la provincia de Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Is there any way that they could be added, if not this year then for future years? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:03, 27 September 2020 (UTC)

I am not sure how local decisions are made for WLM-ES, but as I was able to check these should have been included in the list of monuments. Have you contacted local organizers directly? Pinging Rubén Ojeda (WMES). --Joalpe (talk) 14:08, 27 September 2020 (UTC)
@Mike Peel: thank you for your notification. If it is not a BIC, the photos can be part of WLM without problem but will not be eligible for a prize. If it's a BIC, the initial database we rely on for the contest is published by the Ministry of Culture and is not always updated, so these problems can occur. I will include it in the list. Best. --Rubén Ojeda (WMES) (talk) 11:44, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
@Rubén Ojeda (WMES): Thanks for the reply. Should I add the photos to WLM using just {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2020|es-cat}}, or is there an equivalent to {{BIC}} I should add as well? No problem if they aren't eligible for prizes, I just like participating when I can. :-) Also, if I can help with the identification of monuments in future years, please let me know, I was adding BIC of the Canary Islands ID (P7006) values earlier this month and am happy to do the same for other local databases. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 11:52, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
@Mike Peel: sorry for answering late. Yes, you can add them using {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2020|es}}. About other databases, we are trying to upload all the protected elements in each autonomous community to Wikidata and from there generate the lists. At the moment we have very few of them, but if you want we can talk about it :). --Rubén Ojeda (WMES) (talk) 15:13, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
@Rubén Ojeda (WMES): I guess it's too late to tag them now, as it's October? Anyhow, feel free to ping me in the future if there's anything I can do to help with databases etc. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 16:45, 8 October 2020 (UTC)
@Mike Peel and Rubén Ojeda (WMES): La Zarza is a BIC, as you can check in the official relation of BIC of the Canary Islands government, check it. If an item has BIC of the Canary Islands ID (P7006), it is because it is a BIC included in this relation. But Salinas de Fuencaliente is not a BIC: it isn't in the mentioned relation and I did not find it in the BOC. Sometimes the official sources, the database of the Ministry of Culture and the one of the Canary Islands are not updated. Regards, Ivanhercaz (talk) 15:06, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
P.S. And thank you, Mike Peel, for your contributions to La Zarza. Really awesome! Regards, Ivanhercaz (talk) 15:08, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Upload Wizard for competition starting in November

Can anyone help with this upload link? It is wrongly stating that "Wiki Loves Monuments will start in September. You may still share your images, but they will not be eligible for the competition" Although our competition is taking place in November. Thanks in advance for any help :) Abdeaitali (talk) 08:57, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi Abdeaitali, The text was created years ago in many languages, when Wiki Loves Monuments only took place in September. Hoping that COVID only influences WLM this year, and in future years it would be back to normal, it has been considered a big effort to update this month name for this year alone in the many languages this text has been translated in. Please be aware: this text is only shown as back up mechanism that people know the contest is not currently running in that area, but is scheduled to start later. Normally people should not see this text as they are informed on the contest page about when it starts.
If it is still welcomed to have this text changed, please do not change it to another month name, but make it more generally so it can be used in any month in future in case the contest is starting differently again. Thanks! Romaine (talk) 12:48, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Ndahiro derrick (talk) 13:58, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Ndahiro derrick, Sorry for the delay, I expected that you already got a message from the member of the international WLM team who is coordinating the contact the communication with the local teams.
The WLM photo contest in each country has a duration of maximum one month (see here). This means that it is not possible to make the context two weeks longer, also as this would be unfair towards other countries. In Rwanda the photo contest already had run for a month.
You say you was able to secure a contest extension, but this was not arranged with the international WLM team (nobody from us has indicated that two weeks extension is fine). Perhaps this is related to the grant you requested from WMF, but that has no influence on the length of the period people can upload photos that participate in the photo contest. (WMF has no say in community contests on the platforms.) Romaine (talk) 15:46, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
Adding to User:Romaine's clarification - it won't be possible for the International Teamt to grant an extension, for the reason that Wiki Loves Monuments in an international competition which is held in a federated model, and respective country campaigns are handled by the national organizers. However, the International Team sets a framework, which every country agrees to, for participation. These include basic things such as competition dates, jury submissions deadline etc. Every year, WLM is internationally held from 1 Sept to 30 September i.e. 30 days - it has been this way since its inception. However, this year, because of the pandemic, we have given a bracket from Sept to Nov, and national organizers can run their campaign for 30 days in that time frame, according to the situation in their country. 30 days is consistently maintained (though some countries do take a leeway of a day or two, in a few cases) internationally, so as to keep it fair for participants of all countries i.e. it is not fair for participants of one country to get only 30 days, while the other gets 40 days. So, for that reason, we won't be able to grant any extension. I would suggest going forward with the jury process. I understand that it might have more participation, but as I said, it is not fair for other countries. This learning can be used to plan well in advance for next year. Secondly, I see that this whole confusion happened with the approval of extension for grant dates. Grant dates are different from Campaign dates - grant dates are the dates between which you can spend the funds, and the campaign dates are the dates during which the campaign takes place and participants can upload pictures. For example (also mostly), even if a campaign ends on 30 Sep, organizers can put the grant end date as 30 Oct or later, because people need that time to distribute prizes, conduct award ceremonies etc. Regarding approvals, WMF manages the grant dates and the WLM International Team manages the campaign dates i.e. WMF can't approve extension of campaign dates and we can't approve extension of campaign dates. Even if you see the grant's talk page regarding extension, Davit said, "Your request is approved; the new grant end date is now November 17, 2020" - it is the grant end date, but not the campaign end date. I am sorry that this may not sound very pleasant to you, as you might be planning for extension, but for consistency internationally, we have to stick to this. Please let me know if we can be of further help, or any questions. KCVelaga (talk · mail) 14:59, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

well understood , KCVelaga & User:Romaine thanks a lot for the insightful feedback Ndahiro derrick (talk) 14:51, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

WLM Country issue

Building date in database

Why monument building dates are not represented in global Monuments database? Lzhl (talk) 21:21, 12 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Lzhl: , there could be several reasons I can think of.
  • The monument is not recognised as a monument by your local or national authorities;
  • The team organising WLM in your country does not have access to the monument lists from your local or national authorities;
  • The monument lists from your country have not yet been added to Wikidata.
Are you an organiser yourself, or would you like to join the competition with your images? Maybe I can help you find out, if you could share which country and monuments you are looking for. Ciell (talk) 11:11, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
I'm organiser more. I develop website with map of russian monuments and I was surprised that global database API haven't information about date monument was building. I solved problem by local database API. But it'd be good if this information will be added to global API. Lzhl (talk) 19:31, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
Lzhl, to my understanding and knowledge, Monuments database is deprecated and should be eventually replaced by Wikidata, although there seems to be no organized effort of migrating the monument lists to Wikidata, nor is it a feasible task for some of the countries, Russia included. Therefore, I do not think that any new fields will be ever added to Monuments database. It will be as it is now, but you can use our local database indeed. --Alexander 19:39, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
