Screenshot?[edit]

Could a screenshot of this gadget be added on the help page? And could this page be linked on the front page of the 'Help' section? It's quite hidden at the moment... Wiki-uk (talk) 18:32, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, Commons is such cluttered, could you please add a link "the front page of the 'Help' section" to avoid we're talking about different pages? Thank you! -- RE rillke questions? 19:40, 23 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the screen shot with the annotations! I am referring to: Help:Contents, or any of it's sub-pages, if the front page is too much on the top. Anyway, I feel this tool makes Commons more attractive for visitors and in my opinion they should me made aware of it's existence at an accesible place. Why isn't it actually default 'switched on' for all visitors? Wiki-uk (talk) 19:02, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback and reply. It's not default because
  1. I (and the developer of this) don't have the time to ensure it is running 24h/d on all machines with all skins & language settings
  2. Some users complained about the colored buttons and I am sure there would be more of them if we would make it default. On Commons we've already the heaviest JavaScript running (852.6 KB of script e.g. on a user page by default), compared with other wikis.
If you want to add this page to Help:Contents, be bold and try it. It's only semi-protected so you should be able to edit it. If you believe, it should be made default, please propose this on COM:VPP, please. Perhaps you know some good script authors who could help on Commons? Or just people interested in learning JavaScript? Any help would be appreciated. Regards -- RE rillke questions? 20:07, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Order of presentation[edit]

This is a great gadget, but I am wondering how it choose the order of presentation. I just started a new gallery (Judo in Canada), and I can't figure out how the gadget decides what order the images should be in. It definitely does not follow the order that they occur on the page. CanadianJudoka (talk) 20:39, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Judoka from Canady, which Browser are you using? Opera ignores the order but other Browsers like Safari, Chrome, Firefox and IE should respect it. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 21:10, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm using Chrome. CanadianJudoka (talk) 21:21, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I forwarded this issue. -- Rillke(q?) 21:25, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thanks. While I'm asking questions, is there a specific reason that the play, forward, and back buttons are above the image being displayed instead of below it? CanadianJudoka (talk) 00:25, 25 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is no specific reason for it but why should they be below? -- Rillke(q?) 15:14, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@CanadianJudoka: The issue is now fixed. -- Rillke(q?) 15:14, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hiding image text?[edit]

How can I show a slideshow without the ugly text box with image metadata on the left hand side? Or what about making the background color of the box same grey as image background so that it is lest prominent? H@r@ld (talk) 13:33, 17 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Interference with Cat-a-lot[edit]

Tried to use Cat-a-lot as normal, this tool makes it impossible to enter a new cat name: type one in, you need to press enter for Cat-a-lot to select that typed cat name, but pressin enter brings up the slideshow. Please fix. In case this is not a global problem, I'm running IE8 on Win7 (work computer) and was trying to enter "Close-ups of Anemone nemorosa flowers" in Cat-a-lot at Category:Closeups of Anemone nemorosa flowers. --Pitke (talk) 10:55, 10 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is a very good tool. For „Art galleries“ more information is needed. So I need to see the institution/gallery, perhaps date, year, medium. Birth- and death date is double by artist template. IMHO normdata is not needed. Perhaps you can improve this. thanks. I will put the proposal on Commons:Village pump/Proposals.––Oursana (talk) 18:04, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Interference with HotCat[edit]

Hi, I like the slideshow. Useful and fast.

There seems to be a problem with HotCat: After running the slideshow on a category, and closing the slideshow, it is not possible to enter spaces into the HotCat input field (using the space key), c/p of spaces works. Happens in FF on Mac. After reloading the category, the behavior disappears back to normal. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 22:25, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is a bug in the slideshow. It should not interfere with any events when hidden. -- Rillke(q?) 22:48, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Music[edit]

Can the slideshow functionality be used to play consecutive music files? For example, here we have a bunch of music files, and it would be nice if they would play without having to click on each one individually.

I have also asked this question here. Happy Thanksgiving.Anythingyouwant (talk) 17:24, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Emdeding[edit]

Is it possible to embed the gallery slideshow in an external website? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JennyMed (talk • contribs) 21:16, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You likely better go with WikiPic or a MediaWiki extension. However, it is possible to port this slideshow but requires JavaScript knowledge. See MediaWiki_talk:Gadget-GallerySlideshow.js#Adding_Gallery_Slideshow_to_My_Wiki -- Rillke(q?) 21:59, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess JennyMed was talking about embedding on a non-wiki site (still a guess but it's probably the Wiki loves sea turtle monuments site). Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk)

Order of presentation does not work with Safari[edit]

Perhaps someone can help. The slideshow does not follow the cat order. MediaWiki talk:GallerySlideshow.js#Order of presentation does not work with Safari Thanks--Oursana (talk) 10:09, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm on a Mac, and neither Safari nor Chrome works in this regard. Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Vzeebjtf (talk) 22:45, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Vzeebjtf and Oursana: The issue is now fixed. -- Rillke(q?) 15:15, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Max image feature?[edit]

By this I mean some way of displaying the image its max possible size in the display without info and other material. It should be an easy toggle, perhaps right click context menu.

I love watching these slideshows on my big TV screen with a remote gadget I have that allows me to control my laptop feeding the image. The info is great, without it the slideshow would be pretty meaningless unless you were very familiar with the paintings or whatever is being depicted. But it would be nice to zoom in and out of a max picture as well (perhaps even zoom in for detail as well?)

But a great app all the same. Jennie Matthews 97 (talk) 15:37, 7 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dependencies[edit]

What are all the dependencies of this gadget? I.e. what pages would need to be exported from Commons and imported to a third-party wiki to get the slideshow feature to work there? I gather that MediaWiki:GallerySlideshow.js, MediaWiki:Gadget-GallerySlideshow.css, and MediaWiki:Gadget-GallerySlideshow.js are required; what else? Is there some code in MediaWiki:Common.js or MediaWiki:Common.js that needs to be copied over to get it to work? I tried Special:Gadgets/export/Slideshow and then importing it; still no luck. Thanks. Leucosticte (talk) 22:15, 10 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fullscreen-mode?[edit]

Where is the button to switch to fullscreen? In firefox 30.0 is no fullscreen-button visible, and the border at top makes it impossible to see images completely. --92.202.122.183 14:48, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

F11 is the button for full screen mode. The great thing about it is that it works on every website. About positioning: Yes, there is a bug in the script that someone should solve… -- Rillke(q?) 16:37, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Option to not show the keyboard help every time[edit]

It would be useful to have an option to not show the keyboard help every time. Once I've used the tool a couple of times, I know how to drive it, and it's a bit annoying having the help appear every time - especially as I have to use the mouse to close it (even a keyboard shortcut to close the help dialog would be an improvement). Mitch Ames (talk) 03:26, 29 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I find this gadget very good, thank you for it, but I have the same question: Is it possible not to show the help? Thank you. --Packa (talk) 13:24, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I also find the repeating "keyboard help" that covers the image and asks for being closed manually every time a lot annoying. An extra cookie remembering that the user has already seen it and in that case not showing it anymore would solve the problem. There could still be some "help" button at the side where this information could be requested at any moment, but forcing to "OK" instructions before each use decreases usability significantly. --Marek BLAHUŠ (talk) 11:13, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Putting this into your user CSS here at Commons seems to be a workaround that prevents the keyboard help from displaying at least for you as a logged-in user: #GallerySlideHelpSplash { display: none !important }. I have included it in my User:Blahma/common.css. Yet, we still deserve a better solution than this. --Marek BLAHUŠ (talk) 20:28, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please show the extension in the title[edit]

Sometimes I am looking for SVG images. Sometimes I want GIF images. Sometimes I just want to see what is available, and what I can combine into a new SVG image. What is already in SVG images, and what is not. All kinds of reasons for seeing the file format extensions. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:26, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please leave up the keyboard navigation, along with an "X" to remove it[edit]

I could not figure out how to get back the keyboard navigation that shows up initially on launching the viewer. Please show an icon along with "navigation" under it. --Timeshifter (talk) 04:29, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'd love to be able to show these pix in order. I'm using Chrome on a Mac and can't do it. Any help appreciated. Smallbones (talk) 00:35, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Keyboard help[edit]

First of all thanks for the gadget, it's doing good work. However in my opinion the keyboard help is not required, or at least you might put it somewhere in a corner, so it does not disturbe the viewer. If you keep the box smaller, you might not even need an option to hide it, which would simplify the design further. Kind regards --WvB77 (talk) 13:03, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes please, can someone fix this? It's annoying as balls having to use the mouse (!) to close the keyboard help thing to be able to efficiently use the keyboard. Please disable this or at least move it out of the way. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:36, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging Krinkle, Rillke and DieBuche, who seem to be most involved with this script, hopefully one of them can fix this. Jon Harald Søby (talk) 13:40, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

French sentence: Download/Upload[edit]

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this message, but in the GallerySlideshow French translation, it says: "La personne qui a téléchargé le fichier sur le serveur"... this is wrong since "Téléchargé" means "Downloaded". To be accurate, it should be "Téléversé" instead ("Uploaded"). The full sentence shoud be "La personne qui a téléversé le fichier sur le serveur". Best regards, Benoit Rochon (talk) 01:47, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Is the a i18n support at all? For my "German" Commons i do not see tooltips or the help window in German... --Arnd (talk) 05:01, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but I do not promote it. I want to have better server side I18n support before doing that. -- Rillke(q?) 15:21, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Opera icon[edit]

Hi! In Help:Gadget-GallerySlideshow/OSDHelp, the file File:Opera O.png is called. It’s an old icon now, so can File:Opera 2015 icon.svg (or no icon) can be used instead? Thanks! ~ nicolas (talk) 22:36, 26 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I removed the hint entirely as browser usage has changed. -- Rillke(q?) 15:23, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Editing bug[edit]

I suspect this gadget causes editing bug. If I edit I cannot type "space", I have to refresh the page to be able to edit certain characters. Could we fix this bug?--Juandev (talk) 09:43, 26 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Now also reported at MediaWiki talk:GallerySlideshow.js#Breaks keyboard input, but also without response. --Nenntmichruhigip (talk) 18:43, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Juandev @Nenntmichruhigip Should be fixed with Special:Diff/518040882/571729944. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 15:11, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

honor thumbtime= attribute[edit]

This slideshow functionality does not honor the thumbtime= attribute when showing (stills from) video files.

Example: The gallery page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/VP9 has several video files embedded along with a thumbtime= attribute that controls which frame is used as the still for the thumbnail. The first file (Artefact comparison ToS f11811.webm) on the gallery page is represented by a thumbnail of frame 0 (reading "VP9"). When starting the "gallery slideshow", the file is represented inside the MultimediaViewer view by a thumbnail of frame 3 (reading "AVC"). Behaviour of MultimediaViewer would be much improved if it also showed frame 0, instead (– or if it played the fucking video!..).

Maybe consider ignoring video files completely (like MultimediaViewer does).--Flugaal (talk) 12:14, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible to get this GallerySlideshow for Wikipedia articles?[edit]

Wikipedia articles contain galleries. Is it possible to use this gallery feature for Wikipedia articles?
Is there any commands or Wikicodes for it?
