Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 05:46, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Dear Multichill:
Thanks for your message. I'm not real computer savvy and just put up an image of Cornelius Castoriadis (only one I have) at someone's request and it's already up at the Swedish Wikipedia entry for Cornelius Castoriadis.
I read your message and clicked "gallery" and got an error message. You may need to take a look at that. When computer experts have errors, I usually think it best to defer to them to solve the issue first, after bringing up the problem.
Here are the categories listed on the English-language Wikipedia page for Cornelius Castoriadis:
Categories: 1922 births | 1997 deaths | University of Athens alumni | 20th-century philosophers | Continental philosophers | French communists | French political writers | Greek academics | Greek communists | Greek philosophers | Greek political writers | Greek immigrants to France | Marxist theorists | Marxist humanists | People from Istanbul | Political philosophers
Might you categorize the uploaded photo with this information? Not sure what to do about categorizing the other person in the photo (Paris-based dancer-choreographer Clara Gibson Maxwell) since she doesn't have a Wikipedia page...

[edit]Bonjour,
- Hi David. Just to let you know, I've moved your comment from User:Yann to User talk:Yann#Permissions. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:45, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- J'ai restauré votre photo. Cordialement, Yann (talk) 19:00, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Cordialement, Yann (talk) 17:25, 30 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for this response. My intention was to allow use of the photo, not to have it cut up so that it the result contradicts the title. How do I do that? Aren't there different types of licenses? I thought I had done that, but I'm not sure where the original page is anymore, as it was moved. Sorry, again, but as I said I'm no computer expert. Also, I never received any notification of this unauthorized change to the image. Why is that? I thought I clicked "watch this page." Doesn't that do it?
Sincerely,
David Ames Curtis
