Thanks for uploading File:James M. Hester.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:James M. Hester.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:Rupert Charles Barneby - British born American botanist.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: uploader carefully noted image provenance and supplied no justification for image being properly licensed
Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hey[edit]

Em, we're gonna have to talk about copyright. I accept that you're supposed to be uploading these images from the library's archives, but it's complicated and you're not doing it properly. Some of them might have to be deleted. I've watchlisted your talkpage, so you can answer here whenever. DS (talk) 19:32, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, DS! I'm not at NYBG any longer but I'm happy to put you in touch with someone if you'd like to ask them to upload these images. I understand that some may have to be deleted. Emjackson42 (talk) 20:14, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
First: is it correct to say that some of those photos were taken by photographers who were hired to do so by the NYBG and/or associated library? If so, that'll make things a lot easier. DS (talk) 21:48, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NYBG claims copyright for all the works I uploaded not in the public domain. They are either the work of staff photographers (a position continuously staffed since the late 1800s) or works for hire for publications. Emjackson42 (talk) 23:30, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You're still in contact with NYBG, though? You could arrange for them to send a release form to VRT from an official email address, or to put a statement on their official website to the effect that the images are available under Creative Commons? DS (talk) 00:33, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I could forward the form which someone would probably fill out, but I don’t think they’d put a statement on their website. Can you email me the form and what needs to go on it? Or shoot me a download link? Thank you! (I’m replying on mobile; sorry for the unnested comments.) Emjackson42 (talk) 00:37, 19 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Volunteer_Response_Team#Email_message_template_for_release_of_rights_to_a_file, <permissions-commons@wikimedia.org>. I suppose "we confirm that the files Emjackson42 uploaded to Commons from <date> to <date>, which are sourced to the NYBG's library, and which were taken by the NYBG's staff photographers, are available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license" would do.
(Oh, and just so you know - File:Maryfrancesisom.jpg - 'public domain because Isom died in 1920' isn't how it works. It's about publication date and the lifespan of the photographer.) DS (talk) 04:18, 21 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've reached out to the NYBG rep! Emjackson42 (talk) 16:52, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Let me know the results. DS (talk) 00:28, 5 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
