Why ULAN entries not relevant to Wikidata[edit]

Could you explain why you declared a bunch of ULAN entries as not relevant to Wikidata?

Same with the Dictionary of Art historians, https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/?mode=catalog&catalog=12&offset=0&show_noq=0&show_autoq=0&show_userq=0&show_na=1#the_start . Maybe you wanted to mark them as "not in Wikidata"? -- Gymel (talk) 09:24, 8 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Not relevant to Wikidata" ?[edit]

Similar to the two above, can you say what criteria you are using to mark BBC "Your Paintings" painters as "Not relevant to Wikidata" ?

For instance, consider James Walter Gibbs (1853-1906) that you have just marked in this way.

Why do you think he is "not relevant to Wikidata" ?

Your Paintings site shows that he has 10 paintings in UK public collections; and Mix'n'Match shows that both ULAN and RKDartists have an identifier for him:

There are accurate dates of birth and death for him, and RKD also has place of birth and death.

This, to me, would seem exactly the kind of artist for whom there is potential to create an entry on Wikidata, so I would have expected you to tag him "Not on Wikidata", rather than "not relevant to Wikidata".

"Not relevant to Wikidata" is intended to triage out entries for which there is clearly no case for inclusion on Wikidata -- eg because the entries are redirects; or because the source has so little data there is no possibility of matching the information with data from anywhere else.

Neither of these are the case for James Walter Gibbs, so why have you marked him down as "not relevant" ?

The next stage of work on YP, once triage of the "not relevant" entries has been completed, will be to start creating entries for people marked "not on Wikidata" and matching them to ULAN, VIAF, RKD artists, etc. Gibbs would be a typical candidate for that; but it now won't happen, because you have marked him as "not relevant".

Therefore please, as requested twice above, will you explain the criteria that you are using to mark painters as "not relevant" ?
