I would like to upload a logo for the page Overwolf but I'm unsure as to how I should upload it. The wizard seems to not be working as after I select the image the square is blank and I only have an option to select more files. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raif1989 (talk • contribs) 13:16, 31 March 2014‎ (UTC)

Technical issues aside, is there any reason to believe that the logo is published under a free license? LX (talk, contribs) 14:26, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
I'm the Overwolf Community Manager and work for the company. We saw the page went live and wanted to give the proper logo. I have permission from the company (as I work for them) to use the image for this. If there needs to be some specific information I just need to know what it is.Raif1989 (talk) 06:19, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
I'm afraid permission to use the logo for a specific purpose isn't sufficient for Commons to host it. It can only be hosted here if the company is willing to publish the logo under a copyright license that allows anyone to use the logo in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. (However, trademark rights are not affected.) If that's the case, then you need to follow the process described at Commons:OTRS. As for the technical issues, the Upload Wizard is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. You might want to try Commons:Upload instead. It tends to be much more reliable. LX (talk, contribs) 16:44, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
We are willing to upload the picture under those circumstances of course. The reason I was asking was because I wasn't sure how to upload the picture through Commons:Upload as it was somewhat unclear as to which category this picture fell under. Actually looking through the Commons there already IS a logo of ours, though it is outdated from a few years ago and wish to renew it here https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Overwolf-logo.jpg. --Raif1989 (talk) 13:40, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
I suppose the most appropriate option would be the "somewhere else" option that points to Special:Upload. LX (talk, contribs) 10:28, 3 April 2014 (UTC)

I have an image from an external website. On the page, the images are stated to be public domain. Just to be sure, I contacted the authorship committee just to make sure and got their OK. My problem is that your template isn't cooperating with me in a useful manner. I wish it would be more clear what the problem was. I fill out the appropriate fields and click preview and I am shown

This work has been released into the public domain by its author, {{{1}}}. This applies worldwide. In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so: {{{1}}} grants anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.

It also tells me that I am missing source information and threatens to delete the files, and that isn't true. I did provide the source information in the fields. For source, I entered "http://ncvec.org/page.php?id=362". For Authors, I entered "National Conference of Volunteer Examiner Coordinators". Then below that I click "Another reason not listed above" and was given a form to enter additional data into. After reading to find the correct copyright tag, I gave it: "{{PD-author|[http://ncvec.org/page.php?id=362 NCVEC]}}".

So what data did I not enter correctly? It doesn't tell me that and I have no idea where it gets the {{{1}}} from. I only did what I was asked to do.

Timothylegg (talk) 19:18, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

Four words for you: Wiki template syntax idiosyncrasies. Try {{PD-author|1=[http://ncvec.org/page.php?id=362 NCVEC]}} instead. (When using URL:s with "=" signs in unnamed template parameters, you have to refer to the parameter explicitly by its number to avoid the stuff to the right of the "=" sign from being assigned to a variable whose name is everything to the left of the "=" sign, and which obviously doesn't exist, leaving your intended unnamed parameter empty. {{PD-author}} requires parameter 1 to be set, or it results in a deletion tag, as you've seen.) Promotional Movie Posters

Hi. I'm trying not to upload anything that shouldn't be uploaded. I'm updating some films on English Wikipedia, and I notice that some films have movie posters in their infobox, which are not free to use commercially. I am completely unsure of the "free use" rationale, but I would like to upload promotional materials from films in order to augment their articles. Is there an accepted way to do this?Onel5969 (talk) 20:49, 1 April 2014 (UTC)

You can't upload non-free content here on Commons. If you have any questions about non-free content on English Wikipedia, you should probably ask over there, rather than here. LX (talk, contribs) 21:06, 1 April 2014 (UTC)
Onel5969 -- A release of material for promotional purposes is not at all the same as a formal licesning under terms acceptable for Wikimedia Commons. There are some limited exceptions for some pre-1978 U.S. photos and similar (see the uploads of User:We hope, etc.), but nothing that would allow all such material to be uploaded here. AnonMoos (talk) 11:01, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. That's what I thought. I've just seen posters there that don't seem to fit your guidelines. I thought all photos that were used in Wikipedia were uploaded here first. Thanks for your help.Onel5969 (talk) 13:50, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Upload a photo previously taken down due to permissions.

I have permissions from both the photographer and artist to upload the photo of Dionne Farris. I uploaded this picture previously. It was taken down. The email address and information I used to upload this file, I no longer have that email account - sherri_williams@myway.com. I want to upload the picture again after having the required permissions via this new account for Wikimedia via sherriwms@bellsouth.net.

I appreciate assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sherri'sEdits (talk • contribs) 19:10, 5 April 2014‎ (UTC)

You should not reupload photos that have been previously deleted. Instead, if you send in evidence that the photographer agreed to publish the photo under a free license (that is: under licensing terms that explicitly permit anyone to use the photo in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes) to our permission archive according to these instructions, the file will be restored by an administrator. Basic information is way too hard to find on Wikimedia

I'm giving up my hunt for the page that shows which Copyright licenses are accepted by Wikimedia and which are not. 20 minutes of hunting through the maze is enough for me. This should be really easy to find, but it isn't.

Does anyone know where I go for this? I stumbled onto it once, in the Wikimaze, but now I can't find my way back there.

Sincere thanks in advance, :-) Cliffswallow-vaulting (talk) 23:09, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Found Commons:Licensing in a few seconds with this search: [1]... -- AnonMoos (talk) 08:28, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Commons:Licensing indeed explains Commons' licensing requirements. We don't have any exhaustive lists of which licenses are accepted and which ones are not, because those lists are not finite, unless you're thinking of importing files from a site with a finite number of licensing options, like Flickr. That said, Commons:Copyright tags has a long list of copyright and licensing templates which are available (and a few that are explicitly not accepted). LX (talk, contribs) 10:51, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Uploading an image

I uploaded an image last night but it was deleted as I do not know how to provide license information. The logo is the new logo for my university and my vice chancellor has requested for the new logo to replace the old logo. The file name is File:ITB logo.jpg. Can you please assist me with uploading the logo. You can refer to www.itb.edu.bn to see the new logo. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Symey.yeo (talk • contribs) 00:48, 9 April 2014‎ (UTC)

Presumably, the reason you do not know how to provide license information is that there is no license information to provide, because presumably, the copyright holder of the logo has not published it under a free license license – i.e. a copyright license that allows anyone to use the logo in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. It looks like someone has updated en:File:ITB-logo.png over at the English Wikipedia project, where it is marked as non-free. You cannot upload non-free content here on Commons. Wikimedia says that source information is missing. What kind of mistake did I make?

Dear Wikimedia friends, I am still relatively new to Wikipedia and even less familiar with Wikimedia. I wrote an article about the film critic Pavel Branko some time ago. Looking for a good photo, I found one on the web and the caption gives the author of the photo (Pavel Branko's son) and it also states that the photo has been released into the public domain by the author. I think that this info makes it freely available and that I may upload it to Wikimedia. Having obtained info on the author and license from the caption of the photo on the webpage, where should I enter this information on the upload page, and how should it be supplied? JoanX.Chen (talk) 22:40, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Hi JoanX.Chen! You're talking about File:ImageT5P.JPG and File:ImaON3a.JPG, right? You've done most of the important things right. The reason the files had that notice about missing source information is that the PD tag that you've used, {{PD-author}}, must have the author's name included as a parameter to the template: {{PD-author|Vladimir Branko}}. I've taken care of that and simplified the file description pages a little. You can see the changes I've made here and here.
It looks like the photo was originally uploaded as File:Pavel Branko, film critic.jpg by Brankovlado, but it was deleted because it did not have a license or PD tag. With the source information you've provided, it looks like it should be OK this time around. I've tagged the file for license review, which means that a trusted user will review the copyright and source information and make a note of it, in case the source site disappears at some point in the future. Filename problem

I have an irritating problem with uploading some vector files to Commons. There are already some PNG files of Dutch road numbers signs, like for example File:NL-N8.png, File:NL-N210.png. I want to upload vector (SVG) files with the same name (to keeping up with the rest of uploaded SVGs) but upload wizard blocks it due to "overwriting existing files" which I'm not doing (how can you overwrite raster image with a vector one??). Please help me solve this.

The XML in the uploaded file could not be parsed

Example showing effect of vector graphics versus raster graphics. The original vector-based illustration is at the left. The upper-right image illustrates magnification of 7x as a vector image. The lower-right image illustrates the same magnification as a bitmap image. Raster images are based on pixels and thus scale with loss of clarity, while vector-based images can be scaled indefinitely without degrading quality.

  1. You are using Microsoft Paint
  2. You were trying to "fix" a file with .SVG file extension
  3. You downloaded the file by right-clicking that file and selecting save image as
  4. You are aware about the difference of vector graphics and raster images

  2. That is correct, I was fixing a file with .SVG
  3. Yes, I downloaded the file by right clicking and saving the image.
  4. I'm not sure what exactly you mean by that.
--WhyHellWhy (talk) 20:26, 19 April 2014 (UTC)
Okay, thank you, this something I can work with. What you did is downloading just a thumbnail (a small version of the original file). To get full image, right-click the image on the file descrption page and select save target as. Then you have the SVG image. But how to edit this SVG file? In Windows, it's a bit difficult because no SVG editor is installed by default. There is a list of SVG editors; I recommend Inkscape if you want to do professional drawing work, otherwise Libre Office Draw may be sufficient. For very simple fixes this online-version may work. When you press save image, a new tab is opened. You need to save this tab using Ctrl+S. Make sure you choose .svg as a file extension. If you just want to correct a spelling mistake, you can also open the the downloaded SVG file with notepad or a special XML editor and run find & replace. It's basically a text file with some markup around the text :)
The reason why you need a special editor is that SVG files are so-called vector graphics. Perhaps you had vector math in school? A vector is something pointing in a specific direction and having a specific length. SVG also allows specifying colors, fills, contours, curves etc. The advantage of vector graphics over pixel aka raster aka bitmap graphics is that you can upscale vector graphics to any ratio and they do not look "pixialized".
If you have questions or get stuck, don't hesitate to ask here. Vector graphic editing is fundamentally different from bitmap editing. But it's cool because you can alter the shapes and layers later, change the background color, … -- Rillke(q?) 21:11, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

I found the solution, help not needed.

I just uploaded to the Commons for the first time without a problem, except for one feature ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Blue_Ridge_UPDATE_Jan_1972_page_1.jpg ). I gave it two categories (USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19) & Publications). Both of these categories are already defined in your system and show up in that image's data list, but it was put into the general collection of images for the first category. It already has two sub categories for that page and I expected it to created a third sub-category for my image (Blue Ridge UPDATE Jan 1972). I have about a hundred images of ship publications from my four years on the ship and I would like to have a separate category for that type of entry. Parameter sequence

The template {{Information}} displays the lines in the sequence Description/Date/Source/Author/...
But the special page "Upload file" presents them in the sequence Description/Source/Date/Author/...
Ok, this is an established view, and IMHO it should not be altered. But I would like it very much if the sequence how it is saved would be Date preceding Source, as it will be displayed.

And I cannot see any advantage when parameters left empty (permission, other_versions, other_fields) are always also saved, if not explicitely removed. See the instructions at Commons:OTRS.
