This is not a simple logo and there is no direct link to the source to see its status. DR? --E4024 (talk) 13:04, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

You can create a deletion request. You can add {{no permission since}} template. You can even search and open Yarasan Democratic Organization website and look directly license of website and if it is not free, then nominate the logo for speedy deletion. Taivo (talk) 13:11, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Hey there Taivo!

I hope things are going well for you. I am writing to request you undelete this file as it is within the scope of Commons. Specifically, it met COM:INUSE as it was/is being used for transcription at English Wikisource. I have no clue what the nominator (Office-Innovatis) was on about by claiming it was being used to blackmail another person. If that user has concerns, they reasonably should be taken to m:OTRS. The case is decently famous, so I have no clue who the person being blackmailed could be (they also didn't make a request we delete the transcribed version at Wikisource...).

Thank you for your contributions! –MJLTalk 22:05, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Comment @MJL: , there exists Wikisource:file:US V. $29,410.00.pdf in Wikisource. The file has 3 pages. Pages 1 and 2 has been proofread, although not validated, and their filenames do not match. Page 3 does not exist as separate file. "The case is decently famous" – not sure, Walter Kevin Moore is still not mentioned in en.wiki. Search "29,410.00" in en.wiki does not return anything. Please answer: why the file should be in Commons? Taivo (talk) 07:17, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
Pages 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are all now broken. Page 1 is just a redirect to the new transcription, but really that is in error since is a proofread from the now deleted file. My point remains that the case is the significant detail, not the claimant Walter Moore. It is cited by the US supreme (Link v. Wabash Railroad Co.). A justice sitting on the bench with Neil Gorsuch wrote the opinion (link). It has even been cited in the 6th District as recently as 2017. The file we have on Wikisource is vastly inferior to the one our volunteers already proofread. I don't see why their time and effort should go to waste. –MJLTalk 18:46, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
✓ Done I restored the image. Taivo (talk) 06:06, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Leave aside admin work

[edit]

Please. For 15-20 minutes max. Help me to make a good "Turks" collage: At the moment we have got two -quite lousy- versions, File:The Turks 2007 2.png and File:TurkishPeople.jpg. Be a good "common user" (gnome) and unite these two to make a new one, before Admin Taivo deletes both for having a deleted item each of them. (Indeed I'm happy that these ugly galleries will be deleted. :) The main problem is I have no clue how to make such a thingy myself. Asking too much? Guess not. I even hope you to say "C'mon, we shall find better images and make a real good one, there is not even one modern Turkish woman here in this crap!" Thanks either way. --E4024 (talk) 22:14, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Comment I have never made such collages. In addition, I do not know, which Turkish people are enough famous and which are not. The proper file should have for example 12 or 20 images. If the file is meant for using in different language Wikipedias, then height of the file could be slightly bigger than width. Why don't you try yourself? If you really do not want to do it yourself, then I need 12 or 20 famous names. For women, please see category:Women of Turkey by name – of course you knew that before I said it. Taivo (talk) 07:50, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! I was only hoping you to ask me the names, frankly I'm too "IT old" to do these things. People change the time on their mobile phones to adapt to summertime and I use it wrongly three months! I will make you a name/file list ASAP. Thanks again. --E4024 (talk) 13:28, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

  • Taivo, firstly I will add one or two kids, as they are also part of the Turkish society. Secondly I did not add any Turkish Jews, Armenians, Kurds, etc because the galleries I wish to replace were intended as "ethnic ones"! How can you decide ethnicity on a people who is the heir of several huge empires? Each of us has some "alter ego" in their identity, be this culture, blood, or even religion. Whatever, later I will ask some other kind user -not to abuse your goodwill- to add the lacking elements to also make a "Turkish People" or "People of Turkey" (not to disturb the ethnicity champs :) gallery. Thanks a lot and in advance. --E4024 (talk) 15:19, 8 April 2019 (UTC)
  • File:Melda - panoramio.jpg Melda
  • File:Alp-eren-khamis-2003-1.jpg Alperen (needs a crop perhaps)
  • I counted 20 already, but noticed that among politicians (they are always too many :) I have been unjust to Ecevit, a national hero for Turkish Cypriots, for saving them from... Here: File:Bülent Ecevit 2000.jpg. Please use your own good judgement to choose. I can propose you other people from culture and sports etc, but you also can find your way. Thanks, thanks, thanks. --E4024 (talk) 21:08, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Complex and simple logos

[edit]

Why complex logos needs OTRS permission, how about simple logos? Does simple logos needs OTRS permission? -2001:E68:4424:F7AE:D5DF:B718:1B4F:C2AA 17:08, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

No, simple logos do not need any permission. How to distinguish simple and complex logos? See threshold of originality for that. Taivo (talk) 17:09, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Descriptions based on wrong geotags

[edit]

Hi Taivo, you just added to several images on my watchlist (and maybe others that I didn't see) descriptions that were wrong, describing locations several kilometers away from where the photo was actually taken. You clearly based them on the geotag, but that geotag was directly copied from Flickr, clearly never reviewed, and probably based on a faulty GPS receiver or similar. I removed both the description and the geotag in these cases (the categories were already right), but please in the future don't add more wrong information based on already wrong information; that's worse than no information at all, since it misleads viewers. Tokfo (talk) 11:14, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. I'll remove these descriptions. Usually I do not add such descriptions, but these files did not have description at all. You can add better descriptions. You said "and maybe others I didn't see" – no such files. Taivo (talk) 11:21, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

Admin questions

[edit]

Hi, Taivo. Please have a look at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Təbriz qarnıyarığı.jpg. I, naturally, like most common(s) users learned to make DRs -among other things- from more experienced ones, like yourself. I have seen you making similar DRs many times: "Small photo w/o EXIF". IMHO these are deleted for "precaution". 1. Am I right? 2. If I am wrong, in what? 3. If I am right and they delete files in your similar DRs (well let me not be unjust, closing admins also deleted several files DR'ed by me in this way :) does that mean we have double standards, one for admins and another for people like me? Just curious. Thanks. --E4024 (talk) 19:45, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

I do not believe double standards here. You nominated for deletion a photo uploaded by Orartu. Orartu uploaded a lot of photos about local food. They are somehow similar and own work is really quite possible. I would be in difficulties when closing such request. The closer could decide both ways, he chose to keep and this is matter of luck. When I find such file, then I usually look uploader's other contributions and if they have similar problems, then I make a bulk request. But Orartu's food pictures ... Maybe they are really own work? Taivo (talk) 21:49, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
Maybe. Thank you. BTW when am I getting my "Turks" gift for my hard work, before or after Semana Santa? Will you take some free days and have a rest from Common(er)s? All the best. --E4024 (talk) 14:47, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
@E4024: , it was more difficult than I previously thought. In addition, there's personal unhappiness in my family. At moment I do not do that and I'll take a week-long wikibreak. Sorry. Taivo (talk) 12:30, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
I see that you're sad and confused. Take care brother, we all passed similar periods. Please take care of yourself and your family. Friendly hug and lots of solidarity. --E4024 (talk) 14:49, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

Clarification

[edit]

Hi Taivo, thank you for granting me the AP right and acknowledging my work. However, I do need some advice on something, the thing is whether non-admins can close DRs as they deem appropriate? E.g. closing already deleted files that are not closed by the deleting admin and closing files and marking them as kept if they is a clear consensus to do so. 大诺史 (talk) 10:38, 6 June 2019 (UTC)

COM:DR says: "Non-admins may close a deletion request as keep if they have a good understanding of the process, and provided the closure is not controversial. If in doubt, don't do it." In my opinion non-admins can close also the requests as deleted, if file(s) in question have been deleted by others, but you must state, who deleted the file and which reason (s)he gave when deleting. Taivo (talk) 10:59, 6 June 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for clarifying my doubts. 大诺史 (talk) 02:57, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

What did you mean by “Free licenses are irrevocable”?

[edit]

On this edit removing a speedy deletion template, what did you mean? I placed the template there because I don’t want this image on Commons anymore. --Atomicdragon136 (talk) 20:03, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Please read official Commons policy about licenses. The second paragraph says: "All copyrighted material on Commons (not in the public domain) must be licensed under a free license that specifically and irrevocably allows anyone to use the material for any purpose". The list after that says: "The license must be perpetual (non-expiring) and non-revocable." You published the image under license CC-BY-SA-4.0 and you cannot revoke the license. Maybe you don't want this image in Commons anymore, but it's too late to make anything about that matter. If you have made mistake, uploading a wrong file, then you can request deletion during first week after upload; here more than 2 months have passed. The file has obvious educational value, it got even some support votes in photo challenge. Taivo (talk) 06:20, 8 June 2019 (UTC)
@Taivo: Is there a way to request edit to the metadata? I forgot to disable location while uploading it, and I do not want the location to be public. --Atomicdragon136 (talk) 01:05, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
@Tuvalkin: I know that, however, is there a way to request to delete old version after re-uploading? --Atomicdragon136 (talk) 03:54, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
  • Yes, request a revdel from any admin, indicating geolocation concerns. -- Tuválkin 05:28, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Precedent

[edit]

Precedent dictates that the 42x54 pixel copyrighted area in part of the photo in the top right corner of this qualifies as being de minimis enough to be allowed on Commons. I suggest you read that page - provides examples of cases where photos showing larger amounts derived from copyrighted works to be just fine. Yes the photo in the top left is a derivative of a photo that was once a copyright violation, but the resolution of the image was significantly reduced to the point that the details of the copyrighted work it meets the rules laid out clearly by the policy in every parameter. The bronze engraving is in insufficient detail, part of a smaller work, and barely identifiable. I will be filing an undeletion request, and again, I ask that since you are an administrator, to please read over the examples in Commons:De minimis.--22:10, 13 June 2019 (UTC)

No, it is not de minimis. The copyrighted sculpture was main object of the photo. It was really reduced, but it showed still enough details for copyright protection. "Insufficient detail" and "barely identifiable" were both wrong. Taivo (talk) 06:15, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

I do not believe that this is a hoax, and I don't believe that it is a valid speedy deletion. It is an alternative presentation of a legislature.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:17, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

✓ Done I restored the file and created Commons:Deletion requests/File:15th-Odisha-Legislative-Assembly.svg. Taivo (talk) 08:21, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

I do agree with your deletion for the time being, as Donna Gedenk couldn't find any information on the life dates of photographer Rudolf Vollmar, so we should apply COM:PRP. But I think you have mis-identified the person, as you referred to de:Matthias Rudolf Vollmar (1893-1969) in your decision. That person was not a photographer, but a lawyer and public officer, no connection to a photography business at all - just happens to have a similar name. So maybe you could amend your deletion reason to refer to COM:PRP instead of the wrong person? Gestumblindi (talk) 12:36, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

✓ Done I wrote that into deletion request. Taivo (talk) 15:50, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia notability

[edit]

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Sondergard Logo.png

Since when does COM:SCOPE depend on Wikipedia notability standards? Just because it's out of scope for dewiki doesn't mean it's out of scope for Commons. According to w:de:Wikipedia:Löschkandidaten/1. Juni 2019#Sondergard Automotive (gelöscht) the article had existed for 9 years because it contained an unsourced claim that Sondergard produced 300 to 500 cars per year which was proven to be false. Based on that (no product seems to have ever been mass-produced, media coverage of prototypes is so-so) it is arguably also out of Commons scope. Unless we had photos of prototypes, which could warrant categorization and a Wikidata item, but as it stands, we don't.

I won't argue with the deletion itself, but the rationale isn't right. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 16:10, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

The logo itself was simple, so it could not be deleted on copyright grounds. But I stand behind my decision: the logo is out of scope. Taivo (talk) 16:28, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
I'm not saying the logo isn't out of scope, but it's not out of scope because it doesn't meet dewiki notability standards. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 14:46, 18 June 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I agree with that. Taivo (talk) 14:48, 18 June 2019 (UTC)

Restoring a page

[edit]

Could you please restore Category:2019 Kazakh presidential election/Протоколы/line? It is not a category, I used it only as a subpage of a category page. In particular, this page stops working after deletion. If you think that such use is inappropriate, could you move this page to the template namespace? Thanks. Alexei Kopylov (talk) 19:01, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

Taivo (talk) 19:20, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
Понятно. Я запросил переименования всех категорий, которые я создал со смесью русского и английского: User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands/Category moves#Category move commands. Просьба Category:2019 Kazakh presidential election/Протоколы/line восстановить и переименовать в Category:Protocols of 2019 Kazakh presidential election/line. Спасибо. Hello, please Could I approve this image that I have uploaded? The image is retouched, the original image shows here. retouched File:Álvaro Conrado (cropped).jpg, original File:Álvaro Conrado.jpg. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xoaw (talk • contribs)

Ok go - here it goes again.jpg

[edit]

Hi Taivo. Earlier this week you deleted File:Ok go - here it goes again.jpg on the grounds of it being a non-free screenshot of a music video. However, from what I can tell, the screenshot has been uploaded to the OK Go's official Flickr account and released under CC-BY-SA 2.0. Since it's from an official source, wouldn't that qualify it to be uploaded to Commons? Thanks. A Thousand Doors (talk) 09:52, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

✓ Done. This was my mistake. And the other Commons user's mistake, who nominated the file for speedy deletion. I restored the file. Taivo (talk) 10:01, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Arne Norell

[edit]

Hi, you left me a message saying I uploaded photos that violate the copyright principles of Wikipedia. Could someone please let me what I should do? Should I remove the photos? Second, I have personally taken all the photos or they are taken from our family album, i.e. me and my family own the entire rights to the photos. What should I do to prove all the rights of the photos belong to me and my family? I honestly don’t know what to do. And in fact I am not using any one else’s material? I’m happy to give you people on Wikipedia the required information if someone could just explain what information I need to provide? Blue46789 (talk) 10:54, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

No need to remove the images, because I deleted them all. For undeleting, two permissions are needed for each photo: permission from designer's heir and permission from photographer (if dead, then from heir). There were different photographers: Sara Ligorria-Tramp, Bukovskis, Philip Moller, sometimes the photographer was not mentioned, so "own work" was unlikely. If you claim to be one of the mentioned persons and also Arne Norell's heir, then open COM:OTRS page and look, what kind of e-mail should be sent to our permissions department at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. The photos with two permissions (from Norell's heir and from photographer) can be restored after processing the e-mail. Please do not re-upload the photos yourself. Photos from family album are generally not allowed to upload into Commons, except if you are the photographer or his/her heir or if the photo is 120 years old. Taivo (talk) 11:23, 20 June 2019 (UTC)
Blue46789, as I have tried to explain to you on enwiki before, I personally believe that you should ask a copyright lawyer to educate and assist you. This may be one of the few cases where professional help may be needed to guide you, and we can not give legal advice to users. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 17:09, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Hallo, what is wrong with this file? --Pogoda (talk) 14:20, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

Seems like nothing is wrong, but an IP nominated this for speedy deletion. I declined the speedy deletion request and created a regular deletion request. Taivo (talk) 14:23, 20 June 2019 (UTC)

COM:SPEEDY criterion “C5”? :) DMacks (talk) 12:34, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Sometimes I delete files speedily, if I am totally convinced, that the file is incorrect. For example, it was tagged as incorrect duplicate, nominated for regular deletion and I really discovered error in the structure. Taivo (talk) 14:08, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Help!

[edit]

Hi Taivo. Can you kindly help me check my recent uploads of aircrafts and let me know what's wrong with the licensing and how do I "correct" it. Thank you. 大诺史 (talk) 15:55, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

@大诺史: , you uploaded photos marked in Flickr with public domain mark. As you were explained on file pages, this is not an acceptable license. There are too many photos to go through them one by one, but usually there's no way to "correct" the uploads. However, see more about public domain mark in Commons:Requests for comment/Flickr and PD images. Taivo (talk) 16:13, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
@Taivo: After reading through, I would say that the licenses for those images can be converted to {{Cc-zero}} as technically the uploader allows free use? 大诺史 (talk) 16:22, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
The problem is that free licenses are irrevocable. The photographer can always revoke public domain mark. Taivo (talk) 16:23, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
True.. Can you just nuke all of the uploads of aircrafts I've made using flickr2commons today? or do I have to start a DR? 大诺史 (talk) 17:00, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
I counted 205 photos. That's too much for me. Please complain in COM:AN, somebody with bot will surely help you. Taivo (talk) 17:04, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi there,

Thanks for sorting out the issue with the orangeade image.

I'm not personally bothered by the loss of File:Barr Raspberryade.jpg since the cropped version doesn't do anything that File:Raspberryade.jpg does better. But it wasn't my intention to have it deleted, only (as with the orangeade can) for the original uncropped versions to be removed for COMMONS:PACKAGING reasons.

I'd have assumed it was preferable to keep it for archival reasons, as this is where it was first uploaded?

All the best,

Ubcule (talk) 16:51, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

✓ Done Oh, you wrote that with pink letters on light red background, so I did not notice that request. In future, please do not change colors, black text is much better readable. I'll restore the last version. Taivo (talk) 16:58, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
That's ironic(!)... I used the pink letters to make them stand out more because it wasn't a standard use of the speedy template. (I suspected there must have been a template out there for this sort of thing, but I couldn't find it).
Thank you for your help!

Filemover rights

[edit]

Hello again Taivo. Could you assign me filemover rights? I do want to help to clear the backlog of Category:Files with bad file names (especially Category:Images of aircraft with bad file names). I've already requested some files to be moved and I hope that I can do it myself as they are a lot of files in the category. P.S.: I will only move files to names that I'm certain that there will be no hard objections to it. Thank you. 大诺史 (talk) 15:18, 23 June 2019 (UTC)
