Your image

Hi Julian. I liked one of your images very much, so I removed the grass from it and did some other cloning File:Frozen Wappinger Creek edit1.jpg. If you like my edit, maybe one day you could try it for FP. If you do not like it, please delete it. Thank you.--Mbz1 (talk) 18:46, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Wow, amazing work! I love it! Thanks. :-) I'll definitely try again for FP. Just one thing, do you think you could take out the lone twig on the right side? Regards and happy New Year, –Juliancolton | Talk 20:03, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
I am glad you liked it :) Of course that FP thing, you know how it is. Some reviewers could have changed their user names to "here to oppose" or "I never feel "wow" " :). I like your image very much and it is FP to me. I removed the twig (I do not know what "twig" means in English, but I assumed it is a branch :)) You might need to log out and log in to see the changes. Any better now? BTW have you ever taken panoramas? If you do not know how to do it, I could help you :) Best wishes, and a Happy New Year!
Looks good. A "twig" is a small branch, yes. I've uploaded a few panoramas, but they're not very good. (This is probably my best one yet. However, it has some odd coloring in the top-left corner.) –Juliancolton | Talk 22:02, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
I do not see odd coloring, the subject is interesting, and the quality is OK IMO, but the cut-off people in the midlle of the image are not good. I know it is rather hard not to cut anybody off, when so many people are around :) Maybe you should have taken not only horizontal images, but vertical too to stitch all together. If you need any help with your images, please ask me. I'll be glad to help you, if I can :)--Mbz1 (talk) 22:17, 26 December 2009 (UTC)

Delete

Can you delete File:Brunswick Rensselaer NY.png? It's wildly distorted and therefore misleading if not innaccurate. It has a perfectly fine SVG replacement, which can be made into a PNG by anybody if necessary. Thanks! upstateNYer 16:40, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

And this too. For some reason, it never would update in the articles, so I replaced it with this. Thanks. upstateNYer 21:28, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Done the second one, but the Brunswick file probably needs a DR unfortunately. –Juliancolton | Talk 23:16, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Can't do it; DR is completely broken. Let the category fester with inaccurate cartography (because that will be the outcome of the DR anyway). Thanks for deleting the other one though. upstateNYer 03:12, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Nice depth of field on that. You know, a tripod can make all the difference sometimes. This could probably be FP material if you had no blur in it. You also might try again with the light on. :) upstateNYer 03:14, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! Yeah, I plan to get some more before they go in the shed for the summer. Taking it at night would be hard though, so I guess I will have to break out the tripod. :/ –Juliancolton | Talk 03:35, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Juliancolton!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hi, Julian.

Could you do me a favour and upload the deleted file along with its info to the German Wikipedia? Under German copyright law and judicial conception logos like this one do not reach the threshold of originality and thus can be used freely. Thanks in advance if you can find the time. --chris 09:44, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm also working on the German Blender-Article and I wonder why the logo was deleted. There is no discussion, so I can't understand it. As deletion-reason http://www.blender.org/blenderorg/blender-foundation/logo/ is mentioned, but there is a term that allows to use the logo for pointing to the product Blender and that is what the article does. So, can you tell me why?--Jan Sende (talk) 10:53, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Commons only accepts truly free media, which means, a restriction of the usage to "pointing to the product" is not enough. So the deletion is in full accordance with the Commons guidelines which take into account international copyright concepts which are a lot narrower in some countries than they are in Germany in that respect. --chris 12:16, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Okay. I found out, that it is because this picture is fair-use. I didn't know that fair-use is forbidden on commons. The helppage tells me to upload fair-use-files on the local wiki. The German wiki only wants to have free or explicit licensed content. Do you think it is sufficient to post the url to the license or do I have to ask the Blender Foundation for an extra permission?--Jan Sende (talk) 14:51, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
It doesn't need to be fair-use in the German Wikipedia. It can go in there as free of copyright because of lacking originality (use template Bild-LogoSH). But don't upload pixel graphics, please. We might be able to retrieve this deleted SVG. That's why I started this paragraph in the first place. --chris 16:27, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
The Evil IP address you uploaded the desktop-icon. I downloaded the "real" logo from the blender-website and converted it to SVG, but I didn't know what to fill in on the wiki-upload-page. So I wanted to ask here, if anyone could do this for me. But you have been faster. If anyone still wants to upload the "real" logo, he can find it temporarily on my own webspace: http://jansende.piranho.de/LOGO-BLENDER.svg --Jan Sende (talk) 17:21, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Thank you, for providing the deleted file and thanks for the alternative logo which is now also available at de:File:Logo Blender.svg. --chris 18:46, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Hey Julian, I had an issue when uploading a tif file at File:Water Pump - Lyon County, Nevada.tif, seems like it doesn't work very well. hehe :). Hey JC, I got a question regarding these Flickr images. What if an image is not identical (with the exception of cropped images and those within Flickr's set images) to the linked Flickr profile image? Would these be marked as not passed? I don't think there's is a mention in the guide pages about these situations. ZooFari 05:20, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
I think if a bit of research doesn't turn up anything (it's easy to copy/paste the wrong link from a photostream), go ahead and decline it, yeah. It's also a good idea to notify the uploader and let them know there's an issue. –Juliancolton | Talk 16:18, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Deletion_Request Issue

Dear Julian Colton,

As a studygroup of the University of Amsterdam, we have the goal to collect/distribute the history about the Don Cossack Choir.

For several wiki-pages containing information about the history of Don Cossack Choir (including pages of Mykhailo Minsky), I'm trying to add some images. The images are all part of the Minsky Family Archive and free for use. But they are all removed due the lack of information about the author and source.

We are convinced that all images are part of the public domain or free for use because: - it's a scan of certain pictures taken by/owned by the Minsky Family Archive. - it's a scan of certain publications (such as flyers)

An example of a deleted file: Deletion_request

Can you provide information about how we can successfully add the images.

With kind regards,

Nico Stam

In the case of that particular file, I'd say initiating a conversation at COM:UNDEL would be the best way to determine whether or not the images are acceptable. Outside of that, I'm not sure how to deal with this issue, to be perfectly honest. –Juliancolton | Talk 23:11, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I will try the undeletion request. Nico Stam Talk

Thank you to have renamed the file 120355 OYEA0q5wHPfRH9ZlSPcFMtyEW.jpg to File:Glasses dishes art.jpg
I see you have located a REDIRECT on the old file page, because my file Piatti bicchieri.jpg had a link to the old 'complex name' file.
Now that link has been removed and substitued with a link to File:Glasses dishes art.jpg - the new name. Does the REDIRECT could be suppressed now?
Thank you
--Decio Mure (talk) 22:06, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I think the current practice is to leave file redirects behind following a pagemove. That way, sources using the file will not provide broken links for attribution. Regards, –Juliancolton | Talk 23:09, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi Julian, could you deal with the renaming of File:Tostal quarter stamp.gif, so I can get it off my watchlist and replace in articles. Cheers Ww2censor (talk) 14:07, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for doing that. Tropical cyclon track maps

Hey Julian, I looked today into the Category:Tropical cyclone tracks to see if it would make sense to sort them in subcategories for the basins. However they are categorized into that category through the Template:hurricane auto track map. So we could use that template for moving them altogether into the appropriate subcategory but one problem remains since when NHC is source and hurricane is type there's no possibility in decide wether the basin is Atl or EPac. --Matthiasb (talk) 19:10, 23 March 2010 (UTC)(who hopes you understand my Germish)

Hi Matthiasb. Actually, they already are partially categorized by basin; see Category:Atlantic hurricane tracks for instance. However, I ran into a few issues, namely a lack of a comprehensive list by which to manage further recategorization. The main category is sometimes linked to directly on the file pages, and I intend to get around to fixing that eventually, but as you say, the template itself needs to be reworked as well. Cheers, –Juliancolton | Talk 19:13, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
