No more images??? 50%? --Svajcr (talk) 07:33, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

I'm glad you're missing it. :-) I'm committed to finishing it, but I hit a bit of a roadblock in that I need additional python development done for the upload script, but all of my usual coders have been busy recently (and I was also traveling a lot in November and December myself). I've got a lot of other activities going on, so I've put it on the backburner. There is still a ton of content for Commons editors to categorize and work with. But if, you'd like to help me complete the upload, I would be very grateful. Dominic (talk) 19:10, 6 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer. What can I do for you? Once complete the upload, I want with the robot (Mr. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mercy will help) to categorize photos by the authors. I already have a list of uncategorized photographers (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Svajcr#Pr.C3.A1ce_pro_robota). I look forward to more images, good luck, --Svajcr (talk) 19:49, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

As your removing one category [1] did not fully explain the reason, how about cropping the No-Parking-from-16th-to-31st-day sign in the background into a separate file to categorize as Category:No parking signs? My proposed compromise will allow readers to see the no parking sign while bypassing the nudity, which is not censored here. Thanks, as I do not know how to crop images well.--Jusjih (talk) 19:47, 25 January 2012 (UTC)

File:LUNCHING_ON_NICOLLET_MALL_-_NARA_-_551460.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

US National Archives series: Photographs Relating to the Administration, Family, and Personal Life of Harry S. Truman, compiled 1957 - 2004, documenting the period 1849 - 2004 has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

NARA uploads

dominic, User:High Contrast is contesting the source of the nara scans i have uploaded, please advise. Slowking4 (talk) 18:15, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Well, he's going to look more than a little silly if he persists after you just explained it all to him. Let's wait to see how he responds before acting, but there is obviously no way these would be deleted by the Commons community for having an unclear source. Dominic (talk) 20:59, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
the lack of a named photographer is a big delete me sign. you would think just knowing what nara was would get a little consideration. "no emotions" lol. he is editing warring about "unsourced" tags in order to speedy delete. i can wait for a deletion review, if he persists.
ok, i believe i uploaded all the tif's i was able. could you advise where you want me to send the large tif's? have 33. do you have a category you want me to add, the uploads are in my gallery User:Slowking4/Gallery Slowking4 (talk) 22:23, 23 February 2012 (UTC)
Dear Dominic McDevitt-Parks. It was nice to have your help with this issue. It is quite silly to think I would "look more than a little silly" if those NARA with bad sources would not be deleted. As a long-term contributor of this project here, I am definately intersted that the quantity of images keeps growing but there are certain rules that are obviously needed to create such a free media host such as Commons (e.g. COM:L). And no, it is a reason for deletion if images on Commons have "unclear source"s - according to COM:L clear source information is required. And besides, why do you need a sockpuppet? --High Contrast (talk) 16:49, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Someone providing enough information for another researcher to go to NARA and find the record is enough sourcing. The initial upload may have lacked it, but once provided, that should have been enough. I could understand the initial tagging, but the persistent tagging of an image resulting from an organized Wikipedia-NARA collaboration was frankly a bit silly -- you appeared to believe that all such images should have an online source, but that is not the case. User:Dominic was the person who organized the event. Carl Lindberg (talk) 17:08, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Note that I do not expect any source statements, but Commons requirements do. No Carl, I do not expect some NARA-weblinks. It is definately OK that such files get scanned and uploaded here, but only giving as source "NARA file" or something like that is really not enought. During the years I have seen many files got deleted because of the lack of source information. And this should be avoided - and it can be done if there is just added a bit more detailed source statement. And yes, this was done for that particularly file and should be done to all other files uploaded through this scan-event (maybe a bot could help here). --High Contrast (talk) 19:03, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Like I said, the initial uploads were lacking in source info, unless you know how to decipher the numbers in the filenames (which some people do). However, when someone gives the exact location as in File talk:Wearing-full-equipment-RG-208-AA-158-L-009.jpg, the response should not be "weak source, not sufficient" -- that is absolutely sufficient. Re-adding the "no source" tag after that exchange was a bit much -- you could have asked the uploader to describe it better before adding the tags. Speedy-deletion tags are pretty aggressive; there are in-between options. Carl Lindberg (talk) 20:58, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
High Contrast, I think you are misunderstanding what I said to Slowking. He was (actually rightfully) somewhat upset at having his uploads called into question, and I, short on time, was merely trying to reassure him that the uploads—which I knew to be valid—would not actually be deleted from Commons once the source was explained well. These are public-domain historical documents from a national archives, scanned with other Wikimedians in an event sponsored by the institution. It doesn't get more straightforward than that, so the uploaders merely needed to make everything clear and the images would be safe. (This is, indeed, what happened.)
Meanwhile, being a "long-term contributor" of the project clearly doesn't guarantee that someone isn't silly, offensive, or, in your case, both. I have no idea why you think I would have used a sockpuppet, as my single comment above was my only involvement in this matter at all. It's an especially absurd accusation because I am almost a public figure here. My identity is widely know—I've organized several Wikimedia events (including this one), done outreach to institutions in the real world, and there are photos and videos on Commons of me with other Wikimedians at many events (on three different continents, too). It's not hard to find; I made a category! Meanwhile, if you look a little bit more, you might find several photos of Emufarmers from Boston Wikimedia events. And we do not appear to be the same person. Such accusations shouldn't made so lightly. I would expect a little more courtesy from such a long-tenured administrator as yourself. Dominic (talk) 08:47, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
You calling me names - this is actually your way of argumentation. Improperly for a "widely know" User with an own category - wow. And yes, Emufarmers and do have curious overlaps in the user contributions. Really strange - equal your are very well known here or on three different continents or not. Why are we talking, we can check that by a different user if you want to. --High Contrast (talk) 18:48, 21 March 2012 (UTC)
I have never called you any names. I took offense at your wild accusations and I said so. I don't know why you think that makes you a victim. And I have no idea why we're arguing about this now. Dominic (talk) 21:54, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Another NARA upload deletion

Hi Dominic, here's another deletion request for a NARA item. Don't know how to respond. Commons:Deletion requests/File:AG208-AA-158-NN-1-1338.jpg Djembayz (talk) 04:07, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Next NARA upload ?

Hello, Dominic, what happened with fantastical big upload from NARA archives? On the page http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:US_National_Archives_bot is still only 48.8% completed. I´m waiting for the next continuation, and I look forward to!!! I wish you good luck, --Svajcr (talk) 08:35, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

That number may be half the actual figure. I think there are only a few left to be uploaded, ones where the NARA record had more than one image associated with it, which the custom upload software did not handle. Carl Lindberg (talk) 17:10, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

File:Betsy Foxman00.jpg

We've been through this a number of times. I forwarded emails from Foxman to me to Permissions. She was quite clear about using the portrait on Commons "Paul Venter to Betsy Foxman Nov 30 "Thank you for the photo! I've assumed that you are giving Wikipedia permission to use it without restrictions. kind regards Paul Venter"

Betsy Foxman to me Nov 30 "Yes, that is fine" I don't think you can get any clearer than that unless you are intent on creating a bureaucratic red-tape snarl-up. Please read the previous correspondence with Permissions. regards Paul venter (talk) 09:05, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't mean to be bureaucratic, but that is actually not clear at all for our purposes. It is a common misunderstanding that all we need is permission from the copyright holder to use the image. In fact, though, Wikimedia Commons only allows free works, even if non-free works have been allowed to be uploaded by the copyright holders, so we need more than just permission—the copyright holder needs to actually say in writing that they are relicensing the image under a free copyright license like the CC0 one you have given it. The copyright holder has not actually agreed to release all rights to the image, as the image description page now claims, and that is why the previous permissions correspondence was deemed insufficient; the correspondence you forwarded only indicated permission for use on Wikipedia. Please see Commons:Email templates for how to properly submit a permission for relicensing. I'm not doing this because of red tape, but because the purpose of our project is creating quality content that is free to everyone, so we care about copyright. Dominic (talk) 09:26, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, there we are. Obviously Commons speaks a different language than that used by the rest of the English-speaking world. When I write "I've assumed that you are giving Wikipedia permission to use it without restrictions" and she answers Yes, that is fine, then there is no room for misunderstanding. So if you want your bureaucratic forms filled in, then I leave it up to you to contact Prof. Foxman yourself and justify the additional irritation to her. I think the time is ripe for Commons to ask themselves whether they are working to improve WP or just p...ing off the editors. Have a good day. Paul venter (talk) 19:25, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
The problem is we can't accept Wikipedia-only works. Permission must be given to *everyone*, not just Wikipedia. Most of the time, authors are not willing to do this, for understandable reasons. The links at Commons:Email templates are worded to make sure authors are aware of what permission is being requested. Commons:OTRS is the address the permission should be sent to -- for works which exist on the Internet, we prefer to be messaged by the author directly, if possible. We certainly want a better free encyclopedia -- but the "free" has particular meaning, in that anybody can use the material, and there have been many misunderstandings with this type of "permission" in the past, which is why we tread very carefully. The permission that even you write says the permission is restricted to Wikipedia itself -- see en:Template:Non-free with permission for how that is treated on Wikipedia. Commons is even more restrictive, since the Foundation will not let us host fair-use works at all, thus the desire for an unambiguous license statement. Yes, it's very frustrating, but that would not change the legal situation if someone then used the image in a way the author did not envision and did not license. Carl Lindberg (talk) 19:39, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
I should point out, in any case, that Betsy Foxman is not the rights holder for that image. The metadata clearly states that her university owns it, and has authority over its use. Dominic (talk) 02:10, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Capture Queen photos

Hi! Could you stop marking Capture Queen photos with no valied reasons for deletation? Eg.: Water mark with the name of the author is not a valid one. Thanks in advance. Electron   13:01, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't believe I have ever marked an image for deletion on the basis of a watermark alone. If you are talking about [2], I marked an image which was uploaded with the text "All rights reserved® To Capture Queen". This means that the license is incompatible with Commons. Dominic (talk) 00:10, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
Not if the file was subsequently licensed properly. Which, given the Flickrreview, it was. That should not have been a DR, let alone a speedy, unless you think the Flickr user is not the author. Carl Lindberg (talk) 00:18, 5 May 2012 (UTC)
See here -> [3] - this was proofed by the bot. And what about this. My time is valuable, too. Have it in mind, please. Electron   00:25, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

Just to let you know incase you're not aware, your notification about the impending deletion of this file went to a bot. The actual person who transferred it is User:Oxyman, as per the file description. The bot is just a tool used by many here, and in my experience its talk page isn't monitored. Looking at this case, it probably doesn't matter, the original uploader at Wikipedia seems long gone, and Oxyman does many of these transfers, so he's unlikely to know the uploader/author either. But if you're going to tag other files for permissions, please be aware of this in future and try to inform an actual human if possible. I'm only saying this as I've seen Wikipedia users cite this sort of unotified deletion as a reason why they won't upload/transfer their images to Commons rather than English Wikipedia, which is obviously a bad thing for other language Wikipedias, and indeed Commons itself. Ultra7 (talk) 19:44, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. That was inadvertent, yes. It was a result of the one-click tagging gadget, so I never saw the talk page it tagged. I'll have to keep an eye on that in the future. Dominic (talk) 00:02, 5 May 2012 (UTC)

I thought some more about it and may be Template:City of Boston Archives photograph is a overkill with half of the fields not expected to be used. So I also wrote Template:City of Boston Archives photograph/sandbox which is based on {{Information}} template. {{Information}} is not as flexible ( you can not not show a field for example, but it much simpler template which might be a better fit. The image meta would be : Template:City of Boston Archives photograph/sandbox

Another possibility is to just use straight {{Information}} and put description and place depicted in a single field, or use {{Information2}} --Jarekt (talk) 03:27, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

Wishlist for NARA media?

Hello Dominic, as an editor mainly concerned with early 20th century history I many times suffer from the shortage of images for some relevant events or people of the period. As the US was in a privileged position in many of these I thought NARA may hold some interesting media for some articles I have written or am writing right now. And I wonder whether there is some site similar to the one available to request pictures from RIAN for NARA where I could ask for the subjects I have in mind. Do you know if there is one? Thank you in advance. --Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 10:04, 6 May 2012 (UTC)

File:Iwo Jima Flag Raising - LoC copyright notice.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

I submit for your consideration

Harej (talk) 02:52, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Dominic, I uploaded the first batch of images of Boston Schools:

  • You were correct that XML file did not provide much more info about the files. It did provide links to flickr files and info about much more files which are not in the PDF document. However if there are more than one file per school than it is impossible to tell which photographer, or flickr URL goes with which file.
  • I added {{PermissionOTRS}} to all the files. We tried to add it to license template only for Walters files and we started getting deletion requests from people that did not see them. The license can be found at {{City of Boston Archives license (0403.002)}} so it can be easily tweaked if necessary
  • As I mentioned the XML file had metadata for 185 schools (not sure how many photos but flicker has 352 files in Photographs of Boston Public School Buildings set), while the set you provided had 126 files. Any chance we can get the other files without downloading them from flickr?
  • It would be nice if we can find people willing to help with categories, geocodding and adding to articles.

You're fabulous! The batch I have has 348 files. There must have been some user error on my part in getting them all in the zip file. Let's try again: [4]. Dominic (talk) 14:00, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Ford Photos

Hi Dominic

I working to organize the Ford presidential materials in Commons - I'd like to add a category for the photos so they are sub-category'd under the Ford Library/museum Collection page.

I'd like to arrange by month/year. Any thoughts? Bdcousineau (talk) 16:33, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Lewis Hine photos

hi, as i was going through the LOC w:lewis Hine photos, i noticed in his bio that he worked for the National Child Labor Committee, from 1908 to 1914, and then in WWI, when he worked for red cross in France. note the LOC says no copyright known [5] therefore not a government employee, as here [6]. in 1936 worked for Works Projects Administration. i may not get around to cleaning up the licenses. Mass uploading

Hi Dominic, Rock drum pointed me in your direction. I'm working with a gentleman who wants to contribute potentially several hundred images of Gibraltar to Commons. He's in the process of uploading them to Flickr and releasing them under the CC-By-SA license, and I was hoping you might be able to help with a bot to transfer them over to Commons. Any help you could offer would be appreciated or if you can point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful. Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:35, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

HJ, uploads from flickr are kind of niche specialty. I would suggest talking to User:Fæ, he does a lot of flickr uploads. --Jarekt (talk) 02:14, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

I was informed that there is some issue with the bot? Could you elaborate...maybe a replacement can be written?Smallman12q (talk) 00:52, 27 November 2012 (UTC)
