Coloring books[edit]

Re: this edit: You did this same edit before, I reverted you with the summary comment, "rv, it's the cover of a coloring book, how could it more belong in Category:Coloring books?" You have in no way responded to my comment, you've simply repeated the edit. I'm not going to edit-war, but I still don't understand the rationale of your edit. Would you please explain what this is about? - Jmabel ! talk 14:56, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: , Sorry about that! I didn't realise you had rv-ed it until I had already changed the categories again. I was systematically clearing out the Category:Coloring books of anything that wasn't a literal coloring book (if you look at the category now you can see it only contains actual coloring books.) so I chewed through a lot of pics. It's a bit of a weird case; normally f if or categories on commons, the "images relating to" part is implied for any given category. So I re-categorised a lot of things as covers of books (if they were) or coloring, although some things don't really fit into those. I'm not sure what the solution is... an "images related to coloring books" category seems not very discoverable, but "actual literal coloring book files" seems unintuitive too... thoughts? Mvolz (talk)
We could have a Category:Covers of coloring books as a subcat of Category:Coloring books. But certainly if I were using the category hierarchy looking for pictures of coloring books, I'd start at Category:Coloring books, and under your approach these wouldn't be discoverable starting there. I wouldn't ever think to look for a more specialized category first. - Jmabel ! talk 23:42, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: ok, I have moved all the coloring books into Category:Printable coloring books and made it a subcategory of Category:Coloring books and put the cover image back in.Mvolz (talk) 15:27, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that seems much more reasonable. - Jmabel ! talk 00:00, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Empty descriptions[edit]

Hi Mvolz, all your uploads have empty descriptions and Language templates with no text displayed. Is there any way to avoid this in future? --Arnd (talk) 07:35, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Aschroet: Sorry! First time batch uploading ^-^. I'll be careful not to do that in the future. Mvolz (talk) 08:21, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No problem at all. I will cleanup the uploaded files soon. Is there any preferable description i could give to all these files? --Arnd (talk) 08:51, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Aschroet: How do you clean them up? Is there a tool you can use? They all have good descriptions on the site I took them from but I wasn't sure how to bring those over except manually. "Bee mites" would be descriptive of all the photos, but they also generally have the species name in the title. Mvolz (talk) 12:00, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Mvolz (talk) 13:37, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Smooth O: So unfortunately there are approximately another 1000 or so photos all from this same website and I apparently neglected to link to the copyright page on all of them. Nor did I put them all in their own category. Just an FYI in case you find any others. I'll look into trying to figure out how to batch edit these... Mvolz (talk) 13:41, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, so all the images are now in a category that has the copyright information at least. See: [1] Mvolz (talk) 15:02, 22 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can you be more spefcific about which web page this came from rather than link directly to the image?

This is so that any relevant academic paper this came from can be given appropriate credit. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:38, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@ShakespeareFan00: done, although these photos were batch uploaded rather badly (sorry) and so there are a bunch more that have this issue; see Category:Bee_Mite_ID:_Bee-Associated_Mite_Genera_of_the_World, where there is more information about crediting them. Mvolz (talk) 09:09, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Could you help me?[edit]

I have seen your suggestion for the 'double breastfeedig' category, and which should actually be called 'tandem nursing'. If you are absolutely sure, would you be so kind to change the name? Thank you.:-) --Latemplanza (talk) 14:39, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Reasons for renaming[edit]

"getting rid of numerical junk in name" is not a reason for moving a file. In this case though, since "mountains" is far too generic, I renamed the file anyway. As I don't see anything in the picture that clearly says "ski resort", I left that part out. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 11:39, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrolled rights given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. - FitIndia Talk Mail 13:57, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
