First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Re:Help with chemical diagram[edit]

Hello!

The image you want to vectorize is actually a very good place to start if you're unfamiliar with SVG creation. Unfortunately Inkscape's potrace formula (to trace bitmaps and create the svg version) doesn't work very well with such diagrams; you have to re-draw the image by hand, but with this image it should be fairly quick and easy :)

I'll create quick tutorial with some screenshots; it shouldn't take me long. I'll start the image and you can finish it, and then you'll have the knowledge to create more of your own :D

I'll leave a link here when I'm finished. Regards, -- Editor at Largetalk 15:00, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Inkscape; this could very well be all information you know already, as I've written it to be as explanatory as possible. You can skip the details and just read the bold text if you know your way around the program a little, or just glance over the images if you know how to use Inkscape thoroughly :D
The tutorial is here, and the partially-completed svg is here. Save the svg, then nce you've opened your png in Inkscape go to "File" and select "Import" to add the svg. You'll have to move it to the correct spot as the svg saved to a different size than the png :)
I hope I was clear enough and not too long-winded! Let me know if you have questions or comments or if it makes no sense ;) -- Editor at Largetalk 20:35, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's sort of tricky and sort of rediculously simple, actually :D

  • Short answer? You don't need to bind them together at all, you can just delete the png in the background and save (select "plain svg" from the drop-down menu though, not inkscape svg!).
  • Long answer? Groups are very helpful in vectors with numerous paths and shapes. You can "bind" several paths together so they move in a group, or so you can hide/show/change colours/etc. with all of the paths at once.
    • To bind paths together, you can select some paths or all paths in the image and press Ctrl+G (I believe it's "Group Objects" under the "Objects" menu at the top? I can't remember). If you have several groups you can also group groups together... it's very useful for keeping small groups of paths together and then keeping the larger groups together afterwards. You can also group all text in one group and all lines in another, and so forth - makes editing a good deal easier.

So you can choose whether to be anal-retentive like me and group everything within an inch of the poor paths' lives, or you can just leave all the paths alone and save the .svg for uploading! It's your choice really. Good luck with the final touch-ups and I'm looking forward to seeing the result - feel free to drop by again if I didn't make sense or if you have more questions :) -- Editor at Largetalk 01:18, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good to hear! I've deleted the images you listed so now you're all done :D
Also, a side note - to make it easier for people to find the images, just use [[Image:imagenamehere.svg]] to link to them directly. Saves some searching and such.
Good luck with future vectorizations, I hope you enjoy the process - I'm sure you'll be a pro in no time! -- Editor at Largetalk 17:34, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
File:Methidathion.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
