Utilisation de vos cartes[edit]

Bonjour,

 http://maquettewicri.loria.fr/fr.wicri/index.php5?title=Accueil

 http://maquettewicri.loria.fr/fr.wicri-t-eau/index.php5?title=Lac_Majeur

Thanks for the maps![edit]

Hi Eric Gaba-

My name is Ariel, and I am a graduate student in the USA. I will be using two or three of your maps for my master's thesis in geology as well as at a number of presentations (posters & oral). I wanted to thank you for being so prolific with vectorized maps of New Caledonia and the surrounding region. It is exceedingly difficult to find good maps of New Caledonia, and I'm terrible with GRASS GIS. I've only managed to hack out two high res, two-color, local area maps using GADM data in R. Just getting that done has made me understand what you have accomplished with the maps you've created, especially the ones you designed from the ground up.

I also wanted to tell you that Dr. Peter Bird of UCLA was my very first professor of geology! He taught me Introduction to Geology the year after he published that gigantic world tectonics map you vectorized. What a small world.

GIS on wiki

(how is it possible !??) puis MissMJ, qui a corrigé mon 'anglais'. : ] !

GIS out of Wiki

Bonne route à toi : ] Yug (talk) 11:20, 19 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

gdaldem for entire world[edit]

Hello, Yug told me that you experienced with gdaldem tool, so maybe you can answer me on two questions related with creation entire world shaded relief map

  • How to show depression as depression not in blue like ocean?
  • How to show artctic and polar regions in white (with other palette) - I want to achieve similar effect that on Google Maps Terrain View

Can you share with me you your gdaldem shaded relief pallette? I want to compare it with mine (build upon WikiMap convention)

I am using ETOPO1 Bedrock data.

Regards --ShareMap (talk) 21:42, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Sting, thanks for reply I am trying to create good looking shaded relief topographic background for entire world. This background will be available in ShareMap as a alternative to the satellita view (NASA WorldWind) and Street View (Open Street Maps) - so backgrounds will be similiar to Google One - sattelite, road, terrain. This background then will be included in SVG files (because it will on the free license). I thing that you are right that ice sufrace will be better than bedrock. I thinked about problem with depression and I thing the solution will created three layers with transparency that will be put together

  • World overlay (everything under 0m alt is treated as depression)
  • Oceans in "water platte" (mask from Natural Earth)
  • Glaciers in "glacier palette" (mask from Natural Earth)
  • Lakes and rivers in "water platte" (mask from Natural Earth)
  • Hillshade

Masking means that everything except masked area will be set as transparent I think that this can be simplified when we use depression areas at mask, but unfortunately i think that it is not available --ShareMap (talk) 18:50, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Are you kidding me?[edit]

The files I tagged contain raster elements which they obviously should not contain. This is easily verifiable with three mouse clicks. I honestly don't know what else to say. I would like an explanation. If you don't understand what I wrote get a translator. Answer here, please I watch the page. Otherwise I will get even more pissed off than I already am. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 14:49, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Wow!! That's really a very “kind word” as introduction for someone whose actions show that he doesn't understand what he's doing and from a ”contributor” who doesn't even have a user page.
First, don't try to change the roles because the one who made destructive edits is you, so those who should be ”pissed off” are all the real contributors who spent hours or days creating maps or other images for the whole community as well as the same who are in position to ask for explanation as your behavior is not constructive but destructive.
Yes, you don't know what you're doing or don't care because you edit without discrimination or trying to understand what's in the files:
  1. Where is it written that a SVG file must only contain SVG material?
  2. It's not because a SVG map has a raster image embedded in it that turns it no more a SVG map;
  3. ”The files I tagged contain raster elements which they obviously should not contain”: it shows again that you didn't even try to understand why there are raster elements in those SVG files;
  4. You delete from the description pages the category SVG maps... and replace it with the one of the common raster maps while they are SVG files;
  5. You delete from the description pages the template ”translation possible” where there is not one single reason to do so: the text in those maps is vector, easily translated, so you made this without giving the slightest look to these files;
  6. If you have problem with raster images embedded in SVG files, complain to the software editors (for example) and ask them to delete this functionality, not here.
As you write (if I understood well) that you knew what you were doing, I can only see your edits as vandalism (deleting the “Translation possible” template being only one obvious and screaming example).
Therefore I will ask you to stay away from those files and stop your undiscriminated modifications. Next time I may only be as polite as you were. Sting (talk) 23:09, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pretty impressive. The namecaller complains about politeness. Tell me: Why are there raster elements in those SVG files? I'm not going to answer the rest due to lack of relevance. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 06:41, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

  • I removed the SVG cats because these are not real svgs espacially in the case of maps there the whole backgrund is raster. So the cat is misleading.
  • I removed translation possible because the files should be fixed before they are translated.
  • Further information.

--Cwbm (commons) (talk) 10:21, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

I've reverted the removal of the raster layer from some of these files. I'll start slapping protection on these files if you don't start discussing this (and stop the name-calling). The raster data in these files is one, subsidiary, element of the map (the shading of the relief), and removal of it degrades the output quality.

Maybe it could be handled as SVG elements, but it isn't in these files. That means {{BadSVG}} may be appropriate, depending on if it can be replaced with a fully-vectorised version without quality loss. It is translateable in current form and being fully in SVG is not a necessary condition for translation, "This SVG file uses embedded text that can be easily translated into your language" is true of these files.--Nilfanion (talk) 10:46, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't realized that raster data was the shading of the relief. If I had I obviously hadn't removed it. My mistake. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 11:43, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Nilfanion for your external point of view and bring back some order.
Cwbm: your bad faith equals the lack of consideration for others contributions, taking radical actions without trying to get the minimal understanding of those files and deleting elements basing your edits on your sole opinion. Sting (talk) 14:45, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Sting,

I have used your map (a vision of consummate beauty!) as a referential appendix in my 1st year (2500wd) geology essay.

I have given you full in-text and bibliographic credit for your superb compilation; and [you have]at the same time, set the anti-wiki academic faculty alight!

Sensational work,

Biggest Thanx. Evan Thomas (Melbourne, Australia)

Thanks you very much for this very nice support! I hope being able to contribute usefully for much more time, not only here on the Wikipedias, but also for people all over the World like you. That's the best consecration a contributor can receive. Sting (talk) 22:49, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dymaxion Map[edit]

Hi,

I was wondering how you created the Dymaxion SVG map as used in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dymaxion_map I want to create a more elaborate map with rivers, country-borders, capitals etc. However Dymaxion is not a typical projection and none of my usual mapping tools do support it. I'm looking for a way to transform the naturalearth shapefiles (http://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/) into a SVG dymaxion map, if you have any pointers, please let me know.

regards, Steven

Hi Steven.
Yes, there are very few GIS software able to handle this peculiar projection. I found the Virtual Terrain Project's site which edits the free VTP application that re-projects in the Dymaxion one. As its name says, it's not a GIS software but handles these data.
As there are two and a half year I created it I don't remember exactly how I did, but I think I wasn't able for example to draw the grid line in VTP so I opened the data in Global Mapper, kept the Geographic projection, exported them with the grid lines into a format handled by VTP, re-projected them in Fuller's one and then exported the map (directly as image, in svg? - I don't remember -).
Hope this helps. Sting (talk) 11:17, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Israel relief location map-blank[edit]

Hello Eric, we need a map to show the general location of Jerusalem on its page in the infobox at En.WP. Right now there's a map of the city streets because there's a dispute that editors won't resolve. Some don't want it in a map of Israel and others don't want it in Palestine. It's not easy to get cooperation at this point.

I think just the terrain in your map (blank) would do the job well but I couldn't get your original one to leave out the Israel boundaries.

So I made a copy of it and named it File:Dead Sea terrain location map.jpg. When I tried it on the page it shows an error. There maybe be something in the naming or info in it that I'm not understanding.

If you have some advice or know that it's a simple problem to fix the Dead Sea map, it could help us. This way it won't say Israel anywhere on it. Or alternately, if you have another suggestion.

Many thanks, --MichaelNetzer (talk) 23:20, 28 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I responded to your message on my talk page. Thanks. --MichaelNetzer (talk) 07:22, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't agree more. There's a lot of heat around Israel right now and it's growing. We solved the problem with a compromise I drafted based on other maps. It's works fine. Thanks for the good help, I understand the templates a little better now. --MichaelNetzer (talk) 22:13, 30 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
