File:2005-tailor-bird.jpg[edit]

Hi Yathin sk, already the red Category:Tailorbird indicates that this category does'n work. Please categorize the scientific (latin) name of this bird. Actually always use the the scientific names to categorize animals, plants, fungi etc. Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 17:49, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Btw, if you don't know the scientific name of this bird use Category:Unidentified birds. -- Ies (talk) 17:54, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Categories[edit]

Hi Yathin sk, please categorize more exact. There is a Category:Mammals of Etosha National Park for images like File:Cynictis penicillata (Etosha, 2011).jpg and a Category:Birds of Etosha National Park for images like File:Spilornis cheela (Bandipur, 2008).jpg. Beautiful pictures btw! Greetings, -- Ies (talk) 17:26, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

I always seem to forget doing the categorization right. Will fix it right away. Thanks for letting me know. :)

White Tailed Eagle license issue[edit]

The image of the white tailed hawk on flickr seems to be under a non-commercial, no-derivs license, which I believe means it is not appropriate for wikimedia commons. I flagged the file in question. For reference here's the photo on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/yathin/7857079800/ (note the license).

Did you note the image instead of just the license? It's NOT the same image. -- ~y (talk) 03:45, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Yathin, "it is perfectly acceptable for them to license the same image under different terms on different sites". So you can have a CC-BY-SA-NC at Flickr and CC-BY-SA at here (like mine). Ref: User_talk:Hwttdz#File:Haliaeetus albicilla (Svolvær, 2012).jpg. (I just noticed that you changed the license of a few images in Flickr. No need if you don't like it. Keep contributing here.) I just noticed other related discussions too. It is a pity that some of our admins have not enough knowledge about such things. But no problem; we've many experienced admins. :) JKadavoor Jee 09:27, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

"Happy Diwali!"[edit]

While Diwali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning behind it is "the awareness of the inner light". It is the belief that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Diwali as the "victory of good over evil” refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening come compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Satcitananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light. While the story behind Diwali and the manner of celebration varies from region to, the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light! And this year Diwali and All Souls' Day come together to fully defeat the Evil! "Happy Diwali!"JKadavoor Jee 06:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on . Click here to learn more and vote »

Yathin; do you have a more generous crop of it? It is at FPC now. ;) Jee 03:34, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I do not have the original with me right now (I'm not even sure if this was a crop) as I'm out in the field. Since I'm in Etosha for the next few weeks, I may be able to photograph a similar one with more breathing space around the animal. Cheers, -- ~y (talk) 13:58, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
