the usage of images from a company

Dear Sir/Madam,

One of the media files I recently uploaded has been deleted because of the copyright violation. I have a spoken permission from the company to use their logo and/or other images taken from their websites. It is my understanding that I have to email a copyright license of the permission. Could you kindly tell me how it should be done and in what form it should be written out? If i could get an example of such a license, i would greatly appreciate it. Hello! Just to ask a question of uploading photos...

I would like to upload a picture of somebody else's Flickr (nothing personal, just a furry celebrity) who I do not know. Next to the image, it states some copyright law kind of thing that said "You are free to: Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format. Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material". I really wish to put this up, and I don't know if I'm able to or not. Here's the pages: [1] and [2]. I went to the first link and saw "Attribution Noncommercial Share Alike", which means that an NC license is used that is not allowed on Commons. See Template:Cc-by-nc-sa... -- AnonMoos (talk) 09:41, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

The image creator can choose to drop the "NC" clause, but other people can't make that decision for him. AnonMoos (talk) 16:28, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
HanSangYoon, the only CC licenses acceptable to Wikimedia are ones that contain -BY, -SA or -BY-SA. However, NC and/or ND are acceptable ONLY if the work is dual licensed and the other license contains enough features to cancel out the -NC or -ND elements. You can try to persuade the Flickr-user to change the license. If they do change it to an acceptable license, then you can upload the file, but it is highly recommended that you request a license review by adding {{Flickrreview}} to the file description page. This is a precaution because Flickr-users can change the license for their uploads but without a publicly-viewable record of previous licenses. If you do not request a review and the license does change again, then the file will need to be deleted. Green Giant (talk) 22:36, 2 March 2015 (UTC)

licenses for Photos

Dears
I write articles in Wikipedia about Syrian Banks and Some Historical events. actually I am very interested to write in Wikipedia and I have more than 110 Contributions.
I have problem with commons, they have deleted a lot of photos or logos or even videos I have uploaded to use it !!!
although, I have mentioned the original e-link of the resource and I informed that most of Photos are created in Syria and there is no copyright with it.
Could you please help me.

Logos are only allowed on Commons if copyright-expired, geometrically quite simple, or explicitly released under a suitable license. Photographs taken in Syria are not automatically uncopyrighted for that reason. As the image uploader, it's your responsibility to provide relevant information which can be used to assess an image's copyright status... AnonMoos (talk) 15:24, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Adding a photo to my article

Hello

I created the article on the musician Brendan Power and would now like to add a photo:

I see that I need to find a photo of him in the public domain or one with a licence to use it, but I'm struggling to get to grips with this. There are lots of images of him on google but as I understand these are not usable.

Brendan would prefer it if we could use a new photo that I will take of him myself. How would I go about using that in the correct fashion?

The big advantage of taking a picture yourself is that you are presumed to own the copyrights and can vouch for the image provenance. A few general tips: Keep as much resolution as possible during processing (if any), and leave the original camera metadata attached to the file. Choose an appropriate free licence (see COM:Licensing; make sure you‘re comfortable with the terms) and check that there’s a corresponding template on the file page after uploading. Add a concise description and at least one category that‘s as precise as possible in characterizing the subject. You may find it helpful to browse some similar content for examples. Good luck! RunBanjoRun, if you take a new photo and don't put it online anywhere else, you can just upload it here. As you know, this means that others will have permission (a license) to use it (the upload process explains this in further detail). after uploading

When someone uploads any video or audio other than ogv or ogg extension like 3ga, mp4, mp3 etc. Are they converted into ogv or ogg extensions in commons naturally ?

transcode status? and transcripts

I have just uploaded a set of 27 radio broadcasts/podcasts which have been donated by my school, Tec de Monterrey, to Commons Category:Shot_Informativo_programs_donated_by_Concepto_Radial,_Tec_de_Monterrey,_Campus_Ciudad_de_México This is my first time uploading sound files of this type and I see a section called "Transcode status" but when I click on "update" it just opens up the same page in a different window. Does this happen to have something to do with attaching transcripts? I have many students doing an editathón next week and it would be great to get a number of them working on transcripts of these shows to add to the files.Thelmadatter (talk) 17:13, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

@Thelmadatter: The transcode section usually lists variants of the file converted to a different format (example). This is done to ensure compatibility in most browsers. Since your uploaded files are audio files and in ogg/vorbis, there is no other free format we support that would in turn be supported by a different browser. Therefore no transcoding is carried out and the section is empty. This is completely unrelated to transcripts.
To be most helpful, transcripts would be added as subtitles, too. Closed captions/ subtitles are explained: Manual on how to create subtitles?, A bit of everything about timed text., About Audio files in general.

I dont have a direct answer to that question as I helped only with the initial letter to OTRS. I do know that the manager of Concepto Radial and OTRS exchanged various others and OTRS has now archived the permission(s). uploading text

I have written the text in openoffice writer (text) and tried to copy/paste it onto the Wikipedia page. However, the tables did not copy correctly. I then tried to "embed" the file as an openoffice file, but apparently that type is currently not acceptable. I also attempted to upload a .pdf version of the openoffice file, but that was apparently rejected. Is there some way to correctly copy tables from openoffice to Wikipedia? Wikimedia Commons (this site) is all about media files (diagrams, photos, videos, sound recordings and so on). Photo and logo upload difficulty in Commons

Hi, it is quite difficult to upload a picture or a logo. In somebody else's similar question part of the answer was to provide "explicitly released under a suitable license". How can we have a sample of such a license for a company's logo? Why the upload of an organigramme or even a simple photo keeps failing? Commons accepts content under any free license. Examples of commonly used free licenses include Creative Commons Attribution and Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike. Do you mean an image you downloaded? All that information will be found on the file page the picture came from. You can copy it directly from there, or in wikitext form from the Edit tab. If using Media Viewer, you can get the credit info in HTML or text format from the download pop-up pane. Another possibility is to use the StockPhoto gadget (assuming you haven’t disabled it in your Preferences), the “Use this file on the web” link contains the credit & licence info.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:22, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

No subject

First as my log on describes I was in the estate business. A while back I purchased an old photo album which included some interesting pictures, two of them where taken in Seattle prior to Washington becoming a state. They are of the original Hole in the Wall Gang and the second picture is of five of their ladies. The thing is that these are basically unknown and where the photographers proofs considering all the others including Big Nose Kate, Doc Holiday and others. I wanted to add them to the Hole in the Wall Gang article but ended up here. So what can you suggest? Thanks! You can find out about US copyright terms at Commons:Copyright rules by territory#United States. As you can see, it largely depends on if and when the photos were first published. Tool for non-wmf wiki bulk upload

Hi,

our wiki at wikiskripta.eu posseses some nice educational images. We are now revising our collection for copyvios, duplicities etc. and in meantime we encounter many useful images that could be further used. I checked out some upload tools, but I did not find a suitable one that would make the transition easy. I was thinking that there would be some equivalent to Flickr2commons, but for non-WMF wikis. The thing with Flickr is that its file descriptions have a well-defined structure, and the license selection is limited. Mediawiki file descriptions are essentially free form. Therefore, bulk uploads from other wiki sites running Mediawiki is not necessarily simpler than from other sites, apart from the fact that if you manage the website, you may be able to export your site's metadata without resorting to screen scraping. Apart from ensuring that the copyright information is correct, the main task would be to ensure that the templates and their parameters used on file description pages on the source site are mapped to appropriate templates here on Commons. Not sure what you're asking, but the purpose of Commons is to collect free, educational media, not promotional links to websites. Why was the file Bhavin.jpg removed from WikiCommons without notice? I have tried uploading the same picture, and it does not accept it. I thought WikiCommons was a place for free upload? What do you mean "without notice"? You were given notice of the deletion discussion on your talk page. You apparently chose not to participate in it during the week that it was open, and it was deleted for the reasons described there. You should not attempt to recreate previously deleted content yourself, as that may lead to your account being blocked from uploading and editing. Short answer: you can’t. The whole purpose of this site is to host media that everyone can use and share. There are lots of other places to publish pictures under terms that forbid or restrict reuse.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:04, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Upload from Flickr using the Upload Wizard, Unknown error: "permissiondenied".

Hi

Just tried to use the new (at least I've not noticed it before) upload images from Flickr option in the Upload Wizard, which is really a wonderful tool to be available, I'm a regular user of Flickr2Commons, however I'm running in to a few issues.

  1. I can't seem to draw a box round the images, it just highlights everything and makes in have a blue background.
  2. When I click using ctrl to add more images it brings up my browsers context menu which makes things tricky.
  3. When I try to upload the images I get the message Unknown error: "permissiondenied".

For info I'm using Chrome that is up to date on a Mac and trying to upload images from the UK Department for International Development.

I think you shouldn't see the upload-from-flickr button because you'll need the upload_by_url user right which is reserved to administrators, license reviewers and glam wiki toolset users (however you can apply for becoming a license reviewer). Without that user right, the servers do at least what they are supposed to - throwing a permission error. -- Rillke(q?) 01:02, 19 March 2015 (UTC)

I want files to be deleted

,I uploaded this two files but, actually I had confusion about copyright of these files. But, now I am completely sure that this files should not be public. And these files are intellectual property of someone else. I am quite ashamed of my nonsense act. I am really really sorry and want these file to be removed from Commons. Thanks in advance. I have written a paragraph describing the career/research of Prof. Joseph Herbert of the Univ. of Cambridge, UK., which I request be uploaded/displayed at Wikipedia.

Joseph Herbert (born April 8, 1936) is Emeritus Professor of Neuroscience in the Department Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining the Dept. of Anatomy at the University of Cambridge as a lecturer in 1971, Herbert was a lecturer in the the Dept of Anatomy at the University of Birmhingham. Herbert has been a fellow at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, since 1976. Herbert received a BSc. (Hons. Class I) in Anatomical Studies from the University of Birmingham in 1957 followed by a medical degree from the University of Birmingham in 1960 and a Ph.D. in neuroendocrinology from the University of London in 1965. how to replace a large batch of png files with svg

hi. i have a large batch of png files in the category AYIL MESHULASH that i'd like to replace with their respective svg files. You can’t overwrite files of one format with another. What you can do is upload the SVGs with slightly different names (appending “vector“ or “redrawn” perhaps), and tag the corresponding PNGs with {{Vector version available}}, thereby linking them to the new files. If your photo meets the non-free content criteria and you provide a fair use rationale, it may be acceptable on the English Wikipedia, while allowing you to retain the copyrights. But the rules are quite strict, and generally require that the image be used in an article and irreplaceable by free content. I might add that a licence that’s “free” WRT copyright doesn’t give reusers carte blanche to misrepresent the original work or its author, to violate the personality rights of a subject, or otherwise to break the law or act unethically. Specifically regarding corporate logos, being copyright-free (whether by virtue of a release or intrinsic ineligibility) does not obviate the protection of a trademark, or countenance any fraudulent use. So if your concerns are in this direction, you needn’t fear that your permission would extend to such abuses. OTOH mash-ups, parodies, defacements, and the like are allowed under free licences, as long as they don’t purport to have the company’s endorsement, which is certainly worth consideration in terms of corporate image … then again, ‘bad actors‘ are quite capable of ignoring restrictions on anything that’s in the public view, so the case can be made that copyright deters mainly legitimate or beneficial uses.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:26, 21 March 2015 (UTC)

HTML error uploading SVG file

I am trying to upload a new version of an image I created (File:Nautilus diagram-en.svg) but each time I do I get an error telling me that my SVG file contains some HTML code— somewhere— and therefore could not be uploaded. I then proceed to the FAQ page, where I am told that I "most likely" uploaded a JPG file with some extraneous metadata... Only I did not upload a JPG file, and there are no instructions about what I should do if I in fact uploaded an SVG file. I have tried this multiple times and am still at a loss. Preventing someone from uploading a file with HTML code attached is all well and good, but failing to provide an explanation about what to do when it happens is unacceptable. What am I to do? No, only a subset of them. We require that modification and commercial use is allowed. And you can't trust Google's automated license detection blindly. Self-copyright

I am trying to upload the logo of Fictravel, a site made by me and the logo was also made by me in GIMP, and I have copyrighted it because it's part of Fictravel identity. But I can't upload it to Commons in that case, as copyrighted (fair-use of course) works can only be uploaded if they are work of others. Can you help? Antiv31 (talk) 07:26, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Non-free fair use content isn't allowed at all on Commons, regardless of who created it, so if you are not willing to publish it under a free license, you can't upload it here. The Share-Alike requirement means that any derivative works must be published under the same license as the original. You should also specify which changes you've made to the content. I'd recommend using {{OpenStreetMap}} instead of {{Information}} on the file description page. Digital versions of old maps

Is it permissable to upload a digital recreation (.svg file) of an old map? I created the digital file that will be uploaded using a photograph of a map that was on public display at Cuvu Railway Station, Fiji as a reference. The only identifying marks on the original map are the initials P.F.D. If your version is a derivative work (i.e. it uses creative elements from the original, and yes, that can be quite a difficult call to make), then the original map must either be published under a free license (unlikely) or in the public domain for your version to be uploaded here. Determining whether or not the original is in the public domain can probably be quite tricky. Please follow the procedure described at Commons:OTRS to obtain proper permission. Do note that "permission to the photo" is not sufficient for Wikimedia Commons (this site) to host it. What's needed is a permission from the copyright holder (usually the photographer rather than the subject of a photo) to publish the photo under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Major issues with "Upload file" page

I have some major issues and questions with the "Special page" called "Upload file" that I get to when clicking "Upload a new version of this file". I think the page needs serious revision...

1. This paragraph is extremely confusing and almost incorrect:

Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. In addition, claims of fair use are explicitly NOT and will NEVER be permitted on Commons. [end quote]

Fair use justification is used all over the place on Wikipedia. The fair use justified images seem to be links to other webpages (such as the top logo on Star Trek). If someone doesn't investigate this like I did and notice that the source is another website, they would have no idea why the above paragraph is being so strict denying fair use images. They would think the fair use images are uploaded images, not links, making the above paragraph incredibly confusing. It should be changed to note this discrepency, e.g. to include this sentence somewhere:

Images on Wikipedia justified by Fair Use use external links, they are not user-uploaded files.

2. There's nothing noting how to get back to the page. If I didn't remember what I clicked to get to the page I'd have know idea how to get back to it. It should have a little box "Shortcuts: WP (etc)" or "COM (etc)".

3. The entire top of the page is information about initially posting, not revising/updating images. There actually is no information on the image updating page about updating images! It has a field called "File changes:" placed under the partially-irrelevant information on initially or generally uploading a file, but it isn't explained. The top actually mentions a "dropdown box" ("In any case, you have to select the appropriate license in the dropdown box or add one below the summary") and there is no dropdown box on the page.

4. The page says the fields Information, Description, Source, Date, Author, Permission, and other_versions need to be filled out, but only the last is optional. Why should information about "other versions" be something that is optional when updating another version of the file? This is backwards to the purpose of the page. It actually says in red neon letters that an image will be deleted without appropriate information, but which of this information need to be updated, and how? Do I stick the revised bracket code (I forget what it's called) in the "File changes" box? And is "other versions" supposed to include previous versions?

5. Can I update the filename/filetype? I don't know anything about .svg files (original format), and I'd rather not go through a learning process and download new software. I'd like to upload in .png. Gimp doesn't recognize .svg.
(I'm revising the file because it contained confusing transparencies. It contains black text on transparent background, this means that whenever anybody opens it in any web browser, media viewer, or image editing program with a default black background (a lot of them), the text will not show up. I've modified the file by flattening the transparency to black and making the text white.)

This is a trivial update, so I don't care, so should I strictly note for reference in the "File changes" that I do not need to be credited for the update (i.e. are people otherwise required to credit me)? Hi User:Squish7! For reference, this is about Special:Upload. This was the upload page before the Upload Wizard became the default process for new uploads. We also have a "portal" to a few different "flavors" of Special:Upload for different use cases; this portal is found at Commons:Upload. Because the Wikimedia Foundation's developers kind of ran out of steam halfway through developing the new Upload Wizard, it's missing support for a lot of key use cases, such as uploading new versions of files. That's why when you click the "Upload a new version of this file" link on a file description page, you get dropped into the old, more versatile (but arguably more complex) upload form.
  1. The paragraph is not incorrect. Fair use content is permitted over on some Wikipedia projects under specific circumstances, but not here on Commons. Such content is locally hosted on those other projects.
  2. I suspect not many people actively go to this page or have a need to do so. Usually you arrive either by clicking "Upload a new version of this file" or via Commons:Upload (which does list shortcuts).
  3. Very valid point. Unfortunately, as Rillke mentioned, without the support of the Wikimedia Foundation's developers there's little we can do to have the page show different information depending on whether you arrived at the form directly (in which case the current information on it applies) or whether you clicked an "Upload a new version of this file" link.
  4. This is information that only applies if you went to Special:Upload directly and selected the basic upload form option. In the basic upload form, the text you enter is used to create the file description page. In that case, the other_versions part is used to link to other versions uploaded under different file names to give people a choice of which version to use. When you upload a new version of an existing file, it is only used to create a comment in the file history, the different versions are stored under the same name and only the latest version can be used directly. For example, here, the uploader entered "change" in the field when uploading the new version. As with the previous point, it simply shouldn't be displayed if you arrived there by clicking an "Upload a new version of this file" link.
  5. Yes, but in that case, you should not use the "Upload a new version of this file" link. Instead, upload the new version under a different name just like you would upload an entirely new file. Mention the author of the original file. It's a good idea to use the same license as the original, and it may be required (e.g. if the original is published under a license with the Share-Alike requirement as is the case with File:Piano Frequencies.svg). Link to the original as the source. You can always edit the file description after uploading to tidy up any details, and feel free to ask for help here. The file will be much more usable if you stick to the SVG format. What you want to do is not difficult, and you can do it with a plain text editor (like Notepad, gedit or vim). All you'd have to do is add <rect fill="#fff" width="520" height="100"/> before the first <rect> line to add a white rectangle in the back. The same thing was done with File:Sinnbild Wanderer.svg to create File:Sinnbild Wanderer bgw.svg.
  6. If the changes you made are simple and/or you don't care about being attributed as author, it's always a good idea to make that explicitly known. You need to mention the original author, and you should mention that the file has been modified from the original. You can use {{Retouched picture}} to point this out.

When a file description page exists at the specified destination (no matter whether a file exists under that name), MediaWiki will discard all input data except the summary/description field, and the file of course: The file will be overwritten with the summary/description field being used for the log entry and the Comment field.
If the wpForReupload parameter is set, the Destination filename field can't be changed by the user. This is the case for the links you follow through upload a new version of this file
Only the Destination file name initially passed to the upload form through the wpDestFile parameter is available as a variable on MediaWiki:Uploadtext.
Unfortunately MediaWiki also displays links with the wpForReupload not set. This is the case on file-less file description pages and when showing non-existing files (w.o. description and file). In this case the user is able to amend the destination file name.
The question now is whether it would be helpful to run an {{#ifexist:$1|true|false}}-check (checks for the description page, not the file; $1 being the wpDestFile parameter) and if it exists, show a different text than the standard upload text and if additionally the file exists (possible to check with Lua) show a warning about overwriting existing files. Phew. Wow, thank you so much for your thorough replies! Here are some rebuttals, if you willː

1. I said almost incorrect. E.g., the word "here" in "not permitted here" can easily be interpreted by someone not paying close attention to the URL or the upper left logo, as "this place that you're surfing". After a half day quantifying these problems in the above post, I have just realized that there are different processes to upload on Wikipedia and Wikimedia. I thought the upload process I was talking about was for both entities. I've been a WP editor for years, what hope does a new user have of figuring this out if they're not paying rapt attention to the upper left logo or the single character difference between wikiPedia and wikiMedia in their browser bar? Webpages have different content on them; it's absolutely normal for there to be different images on different webpages. A change in a small image to the upper left shouldn't signify you're suddenly at a completely different project. The file path from the Wikipedia article image goes directly to the commons.wikimedia image details. The user actually has to be staring at their URL bar and notice the URL has changed domains when they click "More details" on the Wikipedia.org image. Consider this click path:

This changes domains from wikipedia to wikimedia to go to the main Commons file page for the imageː

For the clause at hand to be correct, the definition of "here" literally has to have changed between before and after clicking "More details" on the image. It is very easily interpreted that "here" should apply to "this place where you're viewing this single image". So from the point of view of that click path, the paragraph is incorrect.

2. You've both described a lot about the (shifting) infrastructure. I don't have time to sift through it all and explore everything (combing help pages that explain your terminology I'm unfamiliar with), but as for this issue (how to get back to pages), let me make a point I compiled information for before the previous two posts in this thread (it's still generally relevant):

The following are 9 different upload pages across Wikipedia and Wikimedia, including the page I've been posting about (listed 1st), and others you've been talking about. (Some are extremely similar.) Looking at them grouped together (e.g. clicking each one successively), one can see very clearly just how convoluted this infrastructure is. Note that only one (the 2nd) has the convenient "Shortcuts:" box to the upper right. If all 9 had that box, at least people could get back to the page they landed at, however they got there. Perhaps this is one thing that could be easily changed to help people sift throughout all this confusion? The click paths are so confusing. People with ADHD like me could literally click around in circles for entire days trying to find a page they were at but can't find again:

3. @LX: If the page can't show different information based on the arrival method, then can the text of the blurb be modified to accompany either one, e.g. with things like:

If you are updating a file, then...(etc)

In general, most of the issues I raised in my OP could be addressed by altering that blurb, e.g. this line could be used to clarify the Fair Use issue:

(Fair Use is only utilized on Wikipedia via uploads and external links, it is NOT utilized in ANY manner here in the Wikimedia Commons library.)

Simple things like this would help other people avoid all these confusions that I've had. I guess I'm still confused on what is easily done, and what would be involved or impossible. @Rillke: This is getting a bit too heavy for me. :-). I initially thought I was addressing issues with a single page, not this entire fluid infrasture. I don't even understand the correct page structure for discussing these issues. (At your suggestion to move the discussion to MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext, I actually deleted my OP with intention to move/revise it, then I saw LX's reply revived it, so I replied here.) Is this still the wrong place to be having this discussion? I don't have time to go through a learning process, however I'd like to know I at least lodged my concerns with the widest spectrum of users who may find them useful at some point.

Maybe a lot of this boils down to a base convolution of the Wikipedia/Wikimedia infrastructure. If the domains are changing at random during the viewing of the exact same image, maybe the core interactions need to be addressed. Maybe transitional boxes should appear like:

You are now at Wikimedia Commons. Click here to go back to Wikipedia.

Things like that would solve a lot of these issues. Is there a talk page for suggesting something that basic? Or should I just give up at this point and go back to my daily life? :-) This place can really be an ADHD vortex! (Aside, note that just now I said "this place" instinctively to refer to both WP and here; after years of editing WP, and recent research of Creative Commons, I think of wikipedia.org and commons.wikimedia.org as "one place". It's in that sense that the Fair Use clause in point 1. is "incorrect".)

4. 5. 6. @LX: Thank you so much for this feedback! I've added the <rect> code line to the svg image and emailed it to the author listed in the comments within the svg image. I was about to upload/update but then I figured maybe he should do it so as not to have a 2nd user on the file history. (If he doesn't respond after a bit, I'll just upload the image; I don't know if the email is active.) This wasn't my first thought because the account user:AlwaysAngry from which the image was uploaded from is pretty vacant.

  1. is a consequence of the Media Viewer not providing a clear indication that "More details" leads to another site, which I agree is bad, even if people would do well to make sure they know what site they're on at all times to avoid becoming the victim of phishing scams. I have disabled the Media Viewer, so instead, I see this below the image instead: en:MediaWiki:Sharedupload-desc-here. I think that's much clearer. I guess "not permitted here" could be changed to "not permitted here on Commons" to make things clearer, though.
  2. I totally agree that the jungle of upload forms is confusing. Not all of your examples are relevant for visiting directly (MediaWiki:Uploadtext is just the place where text included on actual upload pages resides; it's not an actual upload page itself). Others require additional information to be passed in ways that isn't technically supported by the shortcut redirects.
  3. Adding even more instructions to that page is not exactly optimal, but it may be our only solution for now, yes. I'll have a think about it and make some suggestions at MediaWiki talk:Uploadtext, which is the page for specific feedback and suggestions. For now, I think this is the best page page to straighten out question marks and sort ideas out. As for notices when moving between different Wikimedia sites (Commons, different language editions of Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.), I'd like to see something like an explanation with an "OK" button and a "don't show this again" checkbox, but that would require support in the Mediawiki software (so it's not something that we could easily do ourselves).

Upload help, Flickr to Commons

So over on WP I'm in the process of improving the article Partial capo. It currently has no pictures. Commons currently has only this image, which is not exactly what I'd like. So I tried FIST. The picture "Capo Dual capo 272" from Flickr looks useful, but I have no idea how to go about uploading it. Help welcome. :) Eman235 (talk) 22:34, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

They are now in Category:Capo. Next time, choose the Upload to Commons using Flickr2Commons, open authorise first! in a new tab, authorize the application at MediaWiki and finally Transfer selected files to Commons. That should be all. -- Rillke(q?) 23:00, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

Upload stops after 65 seconds

The Upload Wizard (the default interface for uploading files to Commons) is pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time, but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels, unhelpful error messages, or simply no way to move forward. Yes, I still have the problem. I also tried Special:Upload but after the same amount of time (ca 65 seconds) the upload stops. Maybe it's a server setting how long php-scripts are allowed to run... Whatever upload tool I use, the upload starts normaly, I can monitor that traffic is transfered, the progress bar in the new tool moves, but both uploads tools stop after 65 seconds and the upload is aborted. --Ryukia (talk) 14:51, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
@Ryukia: on Special:Upload, how does it look like when the upload is aborted? Is it a blank page or some error message or just the same page loading again? It's just the same page as when I started the upload. I didn't see any error message, just the green moving circle in the Firefox tab that indicates traffic transfer stops and on the traffic monitor I can see that the upload stopped.
To make sure that the problem isn't on my side (router, virus software etc) I uploaded the same file to a Coppermine Gallery on one of my servers and it was saved there without a problem. Thanks for your efforts to solve the problem! --Ryukia (talk) 16:16, 16 March 2015 (UTC)
Wow, that's a lot, thanks. Are you using Mozilla Firefox? If so, could you open the network tab (Ctrl+⇧ Shift+I, then select the network tab [possibly has to be enabled first through the gear icon]) before submitting the upload form and tell us the result? Trying to upload a photo that has been "deleted"

I am trying to update my company's website, but it won't allow me to upload pictures. This picture is what I want to upload: Roboy

It says that I can't upload it because it was on a page before that was deleted. Can someone please explain to me how to fix this?

@Serena dulong: Hi, I've no idea what your problem was, but I put all "roboys" here in a category:roboy, and a big 14 MB version of your picture already exists here as File:Roboy_270213_4.jpg. Date of a derivative

I made a cropped version of the image File:Alberto santos dumont.jpg and I want to upload it (it would be more suitable for a table than the original). The page of the parent image lacks the date of creation, though the file is labelled as being in public domain for being old. What date should I ascribe to the derivative image. Given that the source information for File:Alberto santos dumont.jpg/File:Alberto Santos Dumont 02.jpg does not contain enough information to verify the PD rationales (which differ between the two different versions of the photo), I've initiated deletion discussions for both. I'd refrain from uploading derivatives unless the uploaders or a third party manages to demonstrate that the photo really is in the public domain. Thanks for raising the question. How to delete a link sticked into a template - Me quedó "pegada" una instrucción de subida en una plantilla... ¿Sabe alguien cómo sacarla?

But a word, "245px", got sticked to the template, with a link to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard?uselang=es&wpDestFile=Binswanger.JPG_y_Otto_Binswanger_as_20-year-old_student.jpg

I believe the problem is that the template is missing an “image” parameter, and I guess the red link is to invite users to upload one. I expect that adding a picture will solve the problem.

Yes, now that you say it, it appears very reasonable; I´m grateful for your pointing it to me. But I cannot accept the template´s invitation and upload the TWO images the template "expects". First, because it asks for two images united by way of a bad-formatted conjunction (the Spanish word for "and"). Such a pair isn´t uploadable, I believe. Second, because doing an uploading from a template sends the uploader to other pages. Where should the template keep the modification? I don’t know how or why the link is combining two filenames. But try moving just one of the existing images into the infobox, whichever best represents the subject: I expect the link will then disappear.

Nach mehrfachen Versuchen eine einfache .jpg Datei hochzuladen bekomme ich immer wieder die Fehlermeldung Unbekannter Fehler: „unknown“. Ich bin ratlos, die Datei ist 2,1 MB groß und einfach nur ein Foto. Hab schon lange nichts mehr hochgeladen, irgendwie war das früher einfacher. --Creando (talk) 19:27, 14 March 2015 (UTC)

Vielen Dank für den Tipp, habe ich gleich probiert. Wenn man Datei hochladen klickt, erscheint unten "sende Anfrage an commens", nach einiger Zeit verschwindet das und es nichts passiert. Bei mir funktioniert der Upload mit dem IE Version: 11.0.9600.17691, Updateversion 11.0.17. Zuvor den Bildupload mit Mozilla Firefox probiert und fehlgeschlagen. Drei-, vier- oder fünfmal neu den upload in Mozilla Firefox zu starten, damit es dann vielleicht beim vierten oder fünften Mal funktioniert, hatte ich diesmal keine Lust. Habe seit einigen Tagen das identische Problem. Upload er UploadWizard zeigt Unknown Error, auch mehrfache Retry-Versuche bringen nur dieses Ergebnis. Es liegt nicht am Foto/Größe, habe verschiedene Bilder versucht. Im alten Formular stoppt der Upload einfach und zeigt mit das Formular an, als hätte ich nicht auf Hochladen geklickt. Ist sehr nervig, ich dachte, das gibt sich nach ein paar Tagen, aber Fehler ist immer noch da.   • Wie zuvor bechrieben Firefox 36.0.4, Mozilla Firefox EU, euballot - 1.1 (Firefox ist aktuell) - AddOns auch wie zuvor, als alles noch funktionierte (Shockwave Flash Version 16.0.0.305 und Java(TM) Platform SE 8 U31 Version 11.31.2.13). Andere AddOns waren und sind nicht aktiviert (werden erst auf Rückfrage aktiviert, beispielsweise Microsoft Office, Acrobat, NVIDIA 3D pp). Alles unverändert zu dem Zustand, als der Bilderupload noch funktionierte. Keine Proxies. Netzgeschwindigkeiten 746 kBit/s download und 131 kBit/s upload. Das der Bildupload, wenn man lange genug Geduld zeigt, plötzlich beim 5ten oder 6ten Versuch funktioniert, erklärt sich mir leider nicht. Nachdem vor ein paar Tagen der Upload nicht klappte, scheint nun wieder alles zu funktionieren. Habe mit dem alten Standardformular hochgeladen und es geht, mit dem neuen nur angetestet, aber auch da hat er das Bild angenommen und nicht wie vorher den Upload abgebrochen.
