Parliament diagram tool
[edit]Hi Uaine,
I see you've started testing the new OAuth interface for the parliament diagram tool.
How is it working for you? Is it more convenient than the old way? What needs to be fixed?
Thanks, --Slashme (talk) 23:23, 2 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Slashme: It's working well for me so far - the only thing I'd request is that it fills the "Author" field on upload with the uploader's username.
- Oh and just generally, not specifically about the new upload feature, and I know this will probably take a while to do since neither the WM or arch style layouts have been made with it in mind, but adding the ability to make hybrid partial hemicycle/WM layouts (ie Dáil Éireann, Australian House of Representatives etc) would be great. UaineSean (talk) 00:21, 3 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for the feedback! Can you link to a picture showing the kind of layout you're after? --Slashme (talk) 08:09, 3 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Slashme: Something like this: File:House of Representatives of Australia Layout.svg
- Ah, OK. That is an attractive diagram, but there are two reasons that I probably won't implement it:
- it's a bit difficult to make it properly generic: in most cases you'd want the "left wing" parties to be on one side, the "right wing" on the other side, and the rest around the arch, but there's quite a bit of artistry needed to make that layout work really well. In the example you give, for example, the blue spots reach into the arch section, as do the red ones, but to a lesser extent. That probably mirrors the layout of the hall.
- during the discussion about what the best layout would be for "Westminster-style" diagrams, the users who were working on the project felt that we needed to demarcate "left", "right" and "cross-bench" regions, and one or more "speaker" spots, giving a sufficiently generic layout that seems to cover most cases, even though it won't match any given legislature's seating plan. We came up with the layout that's currently there (without OAuth direct upload - watch this space ;-] ) and I think it's probably best to keep that one.
- Ah, OK. That is an attractive diagram, but there are two reasons that I probably won't implement it:
- By the way, I've added a note to myself to add the uploader's name as author. Will be easy to do, but I will probably not have time this evening. --Slashme (talk) 21:42, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
- Update: I've added this functionality to the code. It's a bit of a hack, but it should work for most cases. Please try it out when you next have a diagram to make, and let me know! --Slashme (talk) 22:51, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Slashme: I tried it out here: File:West Dunbartonshire Council, 2012.svg but it didn't seem to work. UaineSean (talk) 23:58, 4 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you :-/ I'll open a bug and take a look over the weekend. --Slashme (talk) 06:10, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
Isle of Man
[edit]Hi Uaine,
To help me debug the issue, could you please try re-doing File:Isle of Man House of Keys Current Composition.svg, and then click on the link that says "Your file was uploaded, but still has the previous info text. To overwrite it, click here"? I'd like to see what page text appears then.
Thanks! --Slashme (talk) 06:20, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Slashme: Done! All looks fine now. UaineSean (talk) 06:25, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2018 is open!
[edit]Dear Eilidhmax,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you voted in R1 of the 2018 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in the second round. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2018) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked.
In the final (and current) round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2018.
Round 2 will end 17 March 2019, 23:59:59.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 18:04, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
