Noisy bot

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Divyesh.jpg&curid=65972064&action=history – this algorithm is silly. It is reasonable to find problematical pages by browsing through redirected categories. But, before publishing an edit to a specific page, check all categories on the page, please. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:05, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi, sorry to bother you. I made a new edit on Category:John Gavin. He died on 9 February 2018, so I added it because it had not been changed. Here is the Wikipedia site for proof... About Lobatus gigas

Hi R'n'B,

Lobatus gigas - http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=564730 - is the real, now accepted name. Eustrombus gigas is a synonym - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobatus_gigas. Please stop your bot. Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 08:10, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

If the bot moved pages out of one category into another one, it did so because the first category contains a {{Category redirect}} template. The bot did not put that template there; a Commons user did. The bot does not create any category redirects, nor does it have any way of determining whether they are correct or not; that has to be done by humans. If you think the first page should not be a redirect, or should be redirected to some other target, you can either change it yourself, discuss it with the user who put the template there in the first place, or raise the issue through the Commons:Categories for discussion process. --R'n'B (talk) 10:51, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

OK, could you do it? I'm not good with the templates and categories. DenesFeri (talk) 11:14, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

RussBot stopped emptying non-empty redirects

Hi! I noticed that RussBot has not updated User:RussBot/category redirect log since 2 June. Consequently non-empty cat redirects pile up.--Roy17 (talk) 12:24, 11 June 2019 (UTC)

Observo que ha revertido el taxón Mahonia nervosa que había modificado. Dicho taxón fue modificado según datos de CatalogueofLife aquí, modificación de Hassler de fecha Nov. 2018. Le ruego verifique etos datos y actue en consecuencia. Saludos.--MILEPRI (talk) 15:04, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Category:Mahonia nervosa was a redirect to Category:Berberis nervosa, but Category:Berberis nervosa was a redirect to Category:Mahonia nervosa. One of these is wrong. I have no opinion which it is; if they are currently incorrect, feel free to change, but please change both of them! --R'n'B (talk) 16:12, 12 June 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

93.133.124.85 09:53, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

There is no Category:Mariä Himmelfahrt Bleialf. There is a Category:Mariä-Himmelfahrtkirche (Bleialf), and I assume that is the one you are talking about. Before you start putting files into that category, you really should read the very prominent message at the top of the category description page, which I believe will appear in German for your convenience. --R'n'B (talk) 15:50, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Adding a category to a file

I have seen that the bot added File:BENJAMIN LOYAUTE Sorry for You Too ©DR.jpg to Category:Nonviolence advocates. What criteria used the bot for that action? This is a photo of a piece of art and not a person. There is no English or French Wikipedia article about Benjamin Loyaute. Wouter (talk) 15:07, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

The user who uploaded the file included it in Category:Non-violent activists. That is a redirect to Category:Nonviolence advocates, which is why the bot recategorized it. --R'n'B (talk) 15:50, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation! Wouter (talk) 19:19, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

RussBot

Hi! Sorry for bad English, I'm an italian user. To get your bot through on a category-redirect to replace the category with the category it redirects to on the file pages, do I have to request you or someone or the bot passes autonomously automatically sooner or later? A few days ago I moved Category:Streets of Noli at the better title Category:Streets in Noli, adapting to the titles of other similar categories, but the bot has not yet gone to replace it in the 109 files of the category-redirect and I would be interested in it passing, since there won't be 5000 images but there are not even 10, and time is scarce. Would it be a problem to ask you to let it pass? Rather I could also think about it but it would definitely take much more time, because I'm not a bot :-D. I thank you in advance if you can get it through. Good continuation. --Capricornis crispus (talk) 11:08, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Hi, @Capricornis crispus: The bot waits seven days after a category move before it starts moving pages, just in case there is a dispute about the move. Once the seven days are over, it will start moving the files automatically. --R'n'B (talk) 12:44, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
Ok, fantastic. Thanks for the information. --Capricornis crispus (talk) 13:13, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello. Would it be better if RussBot leaves files with licensing problem/CSD/DR tags alone? --Minoraxtalk 09:13, 27 August 2020 (UTC)

Minorax: Why? Can you show me an example? --R'n'B (talk) 09:49, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
It’s redundant to actually fix the category redirect within files that are most likely going to be deleted. example. Minoraxtalk 11:51, 27 August 2020 (UTC)
It may be redundant, but it doesn't harm anything, and I think that identifying and maintaining a list of categories and/or templates to be excluded would be more trouble than it's worth. --R'n'B (talk) 19:54, 28 August 2020 (UTC)

Present day Occitanie

Hi, no need to put this precision. It's necesary the present day Occitany as no defined area was existing before. --Birdie (talk) 16:20, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

I know you're not responsable of this brainless idea. I wonder why they didn't do it for every country or region like with Category:1775 in the present-day United States or Category:1870 in present-day Germany as it's exactly the same thing. In fact, Category:1900 in Occitanie isn't a redirect. I create regulary categories like xxxx works in yyyy that lead to xxxx in yyyy. If you think it's not a good idea to create it (even if xxxx in present-day yyyy doesn't exist), I'll just leave the link red and leave it to somebody else to create a category I disagree with the name. There are so many other things to do here. --Birdie (talk) 20:44, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
I have to agree with you, both that I wouldn't have named the categories that way if it were up to me, and that there are many more important things to worry about. Cheers! --R'n'B (talk) 15:48, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Could I ask a question?

At first, I appreciate the powerful bot User:RussBot. But I'm wondering why some easy-to-move redirected categories lie in Category:Non-empty category redirects for 4 or 5 days and has been skipped "in cooldown period" in User:RussBot/category redirect log? Could you tell me? Thanks.--迴廊彼端 (talk) 09:03, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

For example, Category:Embassy of Italy in San Marino had been listed in User:RussBot/category redirect log for 6 times before I cleaned it manually.--迴廊彼端 (talk) 13:32, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
The cooldown period is seven days, so if you had just been a little more patient .... :-) The purpose of this is to allow for users to revert category moves and edits, if necessary, before the bot empties them out. I'm honestly not sure how effective it is, since some questionable redirects seem to persist for much longer than seven days without being noticed, but I think it's better than nothing. --R'n'B (talk) 13:54, 18 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your great effort and answer! Maybe you could add some description about the cooldown period informing users like me :P. I have been emptied these redirected categories lately. Many of them stay in Category:Non-empty category redirects because of Commons:Categories for discussion or categories renaming without dealing related templates and Wikidata Item. It's really a heavy work to deal them :P.--迴廊彼端 (talk) 14:19, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Crank Sturgeon

This seems a bit odd. It's a stage name. Kind of like putting Category:Duck (surname) etc. for Donald Duck. - Jmabel ! talk 16:48, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

I suppose so. I didn't add it to the category; I just subst'ed out the template that automagically added it to that category. One benefit of subst'ing is that it makes situations like this easier to find, and to fix. --R'n'B (talk) 19:32, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

Template:PeopleByName

Hi! «Template used for adding automatically a sort key, Wikidata item and category People by name and Women or Men by name according to the gender of the person». What Why replace a template with this edit? --Микола Василечко (talk) 20:18, 25 February 2022 (UTC)

On the page Template:PeopleByName there is a highlighted note under "Usage" that says "This template must be substituted using {{subst:PeopleByName}} instead of {{peopleByName}}." When you do that, the result is what you see in the edit you linked. --R'n'B (talk) 21:44, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
It seems that the template didn't add anything already added by the Wikidata infobox template? I removed the subst'ed information, and ended up with the same cats: see Category:Robert_Gibbons_(politician)? -- Deadstar (msg) 09:53, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

Also saw these edits. I have a bot that i run from time to time to remove the categories and other things that come from Wikidata. That should do the job. --Arnd (talk) 21:34, 26 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi R'n'B, when doing substitutions like these, could you please add some newlines so that my Bot can easly clean it? Thanks, --Arnd 🇺🇦 (talk) 11:10, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Mmm, not really. Subst'ing the template just replaces it with whatever the content of the template is. The way to fix this would be to ask for an edit to put newlines in the template, but that requires someone (not me) with sufficient editing privileges. --R'n'B (talk) 14:57, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Broken bot

Currently, this bot is "correcting" #redirect [[Category...]] to use the broken template Category Redirect.

When the redirect is standard, Commons automatically corrects the links to point to the correct category. When Russbot uses the broken template, pages simply treat the empty redirect page as an entirely valid category. Don't do that. — LlywelynII 13:00, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

  • I don't understand. In what respect is {{Category redirect}} "broken"? If it is broken, wouldn't the best course of action be to fix it, instead of asking me to stop my bot from performing the specific task that it was approved to perform? Also, I am not aware that Commons "automatically" corrects links to redirected categories. Unless there has been some recent change to the software, that is not how it has behaved historically. --R'n'B (talk) 14:06, 17 May 2023 (UTC)

Category:Old maps of Saint-Martin (France)

Please have a look at Category:Old maps of Saint-Martin (France) where it is suggested to put files in Category:Old maps of Saint Martin (France); which the bot then reverts. Any suggestions what goes wrong here? Hans Erren (talk) 09:52, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

If you look at the page history, you'll see that in 2019 user @Birdie moved Category:Old maps of Saint Martin (France) to Category:Old maps of Saint-Martin (France). However, they did not edit the content of the category page, which includes the string {{TFOMC|Saint Martin (France)}}. I believe that if you insert the hyphen into the latter string, it will change the suggested categorization for the files in question. --R'n'B (talk) 19:09, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Why change of Category from ‘Live Concerts’ to ‘Concerts’?

In this edit https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Caroline_O%27Connor_at_Night_of_1000_Voices.jpg&diff=prev&oldid=810611113 the edit note states that the image Live Concerts category has been shuffled up to Concerts.

The event depicted was a live concert. Why is ‘Live Concerts’ not a suitable Category? According to Category:Concerts the category ‘Concerts’ has become too crowded. Chrisdevelop (talk) 21:50, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Template:CR cooldown

hi! i dont quite understand this template's message. if the category is the target, then it shouldnt be deleted even after the notice is removed right? RZuo (talk) 08:21, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

You make a good point. The template is only supposed to be placed if the target category is empty (the idea being that it won't be empty after the cooldown period expires). However, the foolish programmer forgot to include that condition. It'll be fixed the next time the bot runs. --R'n'B (talk) 13:57, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
🤣 ok. thx so much for running the bot to maintain commons.
i guess we can just omit the clause "until this notice is removed". RZuo (talk) 15:43, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
It don't get it :-) does it mean that the bot removes the template when content (cats and files) are moved to the new cat? Z thomas 15:28, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes. The bot should remove the template (a) if any content has been moved into the category since the template was placed, or (b) if the seven-day waiting period has expired, since at that point the bot should also be moving any content out of the redirected category into the target category. --R'n'B (talk) 16:16, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
I think these categories are never empty, so the template is somewhat pointless. Enhancing999 (talk) 15:01, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Well, the whole reason I created the template is because I've seen multiple instances where a user redirects Category:A to Category:B but doesn't move any files into Category:B; then a few days later an administrator deletes B as an empty category; then a couple of days after that the cooldown period expires, and the bot tries to move files out of Category:A into Category:B but cannot do so because the latter has been deleted. --R'n'B (talk) 16:48, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Do you have a sample of a category that is actually empty? Enhancing999 (talk) 16:49, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
The first example I came across is Category:Tongva Sacred Springs, which is a target of a redirect from Category:Serra Springs. Now you may object that this category is not technically empty, which is true, because the non-empty redirected category automagically gets added as a subcategory of the target. However, based on the experiences I mentioned in my most recent reply, admins apparently don't think this is sufficient to prevent deletion of the otherwise-empty target category. --R'n'B (talk) 17:02, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Exactly, it's not empty. Wouldn't it be more officient to add an automated notification on the admin's talk page instead? Eventually every careless admin has been made aware of the issue and this is solved. Enhancing999 (talk) 17:27, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
I already tried that (manually, not automated), and it didn't go so well. See User talk:Túrelio#Deleting empty categories. --R'n'B (talk) 17:52, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Weird, Turelio is one of the most experienced admins. But then, you are writing about empty categories (which they aren't). Also, he mentions a speedy deletion request. Maybe in that case, there was some other problem involved.
Personally, I never had one of my category moves not completed due to deletion. But then, it's usually done by some other editor manually rather than the bot.
If the problem is a speedy deletion tag on a non empty category, we could add a check to Template:Speedy. Enhancing999 (talk) 18:28, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
i edited your template which now includes the boilerplate template to deter deletion. :) RZuo (talk) 07:56, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
If the category is actually empty, it can be deleted.
Template:Empty category isn't applicable and the addition can be reverted.
We could change Template:Speedy to categorize non-empty categories elsewhere than directly in Category:Other speedy deletions. Enhancing999 (talk) 08:47, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

Re: category redirect

Hi R'n'B, I'm writing here, because the discussion will be archived soon, and I fear you would not read my answer. Thank you for your opinion. I'll write a Phabricator ticket about it, and link it here when I'm done, so that you can subscribe to it. Russbot wait

Russbot currently waits 7+1 days for new category redirects. I wonder if this could be shortened to 2+1 days for categories with 5 or few entries. Enhancing999 (talk) 11:09, 3 May 2024 (UTC)

I'm trying to think of how this would be implemented, and it seems difficult. The number of entries in a category can change from day to day; what happens if it has 100 entries on day 1 but only 3 entries on day 2? Or vice versa? And to the extent there is a problem, it is easily solved by any editor who wants to do so moving the entries to the new category manually (which only takes a few clicks using Cat-a-lot). R'n'B (talk) 12:59, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
I suppose it would have to check on day 3, but day 1 could be sufficient as I'd assume it decreases.
The problem with cat-a-lot is that it's somewhat broken when it cames to subcategories. Enhancing999 (talk) 13:09, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Russbot crash

The bot didn't go through it's daily run: see Special:Contributions/RussBot, stopping at 09:12 Enhancing999 (talk) 12:50, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Yes, that happens from time to time (relatively frequently). It's usually due to database server errors, not script errors, in which case I just wait for the next daily run. --R'n'B (talk) 12:54, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
Ok. It worked fine over the last couple of weeks. Enhancing999 (talk) 13:10, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Stuck in redirects

For your info: Commons:Village_pump#Stuck_in_category_redirects and User talk:RussBot/category redirect log. Enhancing999 (talk) 13:06, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

Honestly, my impression over the years is that no one cares about images/pages being categorized correctly. If you want to spend the time and effort to clean up some of this stuff, more power to you. However, getting anyone else to pay enough attention to the issues to develop a consensus on what the correct category name(s) should be will, in many cases, be a challenge. --R'n'B (talk) 14:17, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
People do get interested once one selects a few from a category to illustrate Wikipedia (though in some languages they care differently than in others).
I think it's more important to get similar images in the same category than how one actually names them. As for the list, I'm not sure how much it slows down the bot. Enhancing999 (talk) 14:25, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
The 1800 files that remained in Category:PD Afghanistan for three weeks (category moved, files moved) may have taken 24 minutes to skip each day [3]. Enhancing999 (talk) 10:32, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Subcategory for redirects with stuck content?

If the bots gets to "x found, 0 moved", maybe it could add an option to the redirect that categorizes it into a subcategory of Category:Non-empty category redirects? Would make it easier to identified the ones where one would need to investigate further. At the same time, the bot could also normalize {{Category redirect}}. Possibly some other cleanup could be done on the content. In the next run, that subcategory could be handled more quickly. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:15, 12 June 2024 (UTC)

I did a test in the template's sandbox, see Template_talk:Category_redirect#stuck=1_option_for_bot. Enhancing999 (talk) 10:40, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

CR notice removal

At [4], the {{CR cooldown}} is still there after three months.

This happened as there was only 1 subcategory to move and this was done shortly after the notice was added [5].

As it's the only one in 3 months, it seems to be fairly rare and could be fixed manually (I added a query to the template description). I thought I'd let you know before doing that, in case you wanted to test some changes. Enhancing999 (talk) 11:20, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

  • I think it's just the odd corner case of a category that legitimately has only one member; normally, that indicates that it is a redirect target that is waiting to be populated. --R'n'B (talk) 12:22, 1 July 2024 (UTC)

Ireland vs Republic of Ireland

Category:Photographs of Ireland by date (unrecognised by the navigation template) vs Category:Photographs of the Republic of Ireland by date. IMO Ireland is the island, physical geography, while Republic of Ireland is the state, political geography. See Commons:Categories for discussion/2021/02/Category:Ireland vs Republic of Ireland category scheme. It doesn't change much for me in the end, but until there is a consensus Category:Ireland remain as well as w:Ireland. I'd say you'd better do a revert here, or if you're sure you're right you waste your time and change all the categories to Ireland (and not the Republic of Ireland). Threecharlie (talk) 15:45, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

I am quite familiar, thank you, with the distinction between the island of Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. My concern was that you created a situation where each of these categories redirected to the other. Pick one. --R'n'B (talk) 16:10, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
Obviously if I had made that change I had already made a choice, don't you think? Threecharlie (talk) 23:52, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
Oh, so you chose that Category:April 2024 Ireland photographs should redirect to Category:April 2024 Republic of Ireland photographs and that Category:April 2024 Republic of Ireland photographs should redirect to Category:April 2024 Ireland photographs? Would you mind explaining the rationale for that choice, since I don't understand it? --R'n'B (talk) 13:25, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
In en.wiki you are an admin, it should not be difficult for you to consult an contributions list. And ok, are you an admin? (From admin to admin, you for two years longer than me) I don't really care in the end, but if you've made up your mind then take it all the way, remove all the "Republic of Ireland" categories and leave only those with "iIreland" and I'll follow that standard, I have no motivation to choose one or the other, it just bothers me that in Commons for a year now there's still no position and the anarchy of who brings their own POV each time wins. It takes someone to espouse the be bold way, I've tried but it seems I'm more interested in defending a POV than solving a problem, like it or not. At the end do what you think is best, do what you think is best but do it, then those who do the dirty work do not know how to behave, I hope I have made myself clear.--Threecharlie (talk) 18:37, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
I cannot tell whether you are deliberately ignoring the point or simply do not understand it, so let me spell it out for you as plainly as I can:
  1. If Category A redirects to Category B, and at the same time Category B redirects to Category A, that is a problem.
  2. It is a problem regardless of whether A or B would ideally be the best name for the category. You keep arguing with me about what the correct name should be, but that is not the issue at all.
  3. If Category A redirects to Category B, but you think Category B should redirect to Category A instead, the solution is not to edit B to redirect to A, but to ask an admin to move Category A to the title B. I am not an admin here on Commons, so I cannot do this.
Just to emphasize, all of the above has nothing to do with what the titles in question are. It doesn't matter whether they relate to Ireland, or Georgia, or South Succotash, or Jupiter. I haven't expressed any opinion whatsoever about whether photographs should be categorized by political jurisdiction or by some other geographic criteria. If you continue to argue with me about that issue, I will not respond further. --R'n'B (talk) 13:49, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
  • Ireland is the parent category Just passing by here to leave a note on another topic and saw this. The Republic should be parented to Ireland and Northern Ireland should always have a double parentage to the UK and Ireland. Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:00, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Rename proposal for Stepanakert.

Thanks for fixing the redirect loop. It got messy there for a while. You may want to have a look at the discussion here on a renaming proposal. Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:54, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Seems Category:Photographs by the Federal Senate of Brazil might take some time, despite help from others. Enhancing999 (talk) 12:55, 28 July 2024 (UTC)

Suppression of a not redundant category

Hello. Recently User:RussBot suppressed from the page "Category:Jean Senebier‎" and two other pages the category « birth in Geneva », probably assuming that the category « birth in the Republic of Geneva » was a subcategory of it. But this is not so (or should not be so). None of these two categories is redundant. Geneva is a city in which one could be born from its existence until now, and the Republic of Geneva is a former state, consisting as well of other localities than the city of Geneva itself, in which one could be born in a limited period of history. I reverted these suppressions. Sapphorain (talk) 12:16, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

I do not understand what you mean by "suppressed". The bot does not suppress anything. Did you read the highlighted notice at the top of this page? --R'n'B (talk) 12:41, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, I read the notice and suppressed the appropriate redirection. Thanks. --Sapphorain (talk) 16:35, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Hiddencat normalization

If you are interested, you could include Commons:Bots/Work_requests#Hidden_categories_added_as_Category:Hidden_categories in the daily run of the bot (replace [[Category:Hidden categories]] with __HIDDENCAT__) ?

What do you think? Enhancing999 (talk) 07:28, 4 August 2024 (UTC)

Postcards

Hello R'n'B, thanks for your work with RussBot. Your bot added unsorted postcards to the Category:Postcards. This is helpful, but it is possible to change the target. Can your bot put this postcards to the Category:Unsorted postcards? This is our working-category. We, the helper of Commons:WikiProject Postcards, will try to sort these postcards from this category into the best possible categories at the next opportunity. Thanks --sk (talk) 15:31, 5 August 2024 (UTC)

To prevent this from happening in the future, the target of the redirect on Category:Carte postale should be changed. --R'n'B (talk) 19:57, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
Ok, with this information, I'd rather leave everything as it is. It's not that important. Thanks --sk (talk) 21:37, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
