My name is Alain Carpentier and I live in the province of Quebec, in Canada. I’ve worked for 8 years for an Internet provider and software development. I am currently vice president of technology of a B2B and E-commerce company. For a number of years, I had no hobby but work. Then I discovered photography and it has become my passion.

Background

English: I am an Officer of the Portuguese Navy, now teaching Cartographic Sciences in the university and doing research on the geometry of old nautical charts. My regular contributions with photos and illustrations to Commons started in 2006. Photography has been a hobby for a long time, though I’m relatively new to digital techniques. I enjoy photographing people as well as nature themes and macro photography. Like in other forms of art, interpretation of reality is an important component of Photography, through which we seek to recognize beauty and show it to others. That is true not only in artsy photos but also in more illustrative works. My first serious camera was a Canon FT, the last, a Nikon D80.

AngMoKio

Background

I was born in 1978 and live in Germany. I started contributing to the German Wikipedia in 2004. Two years later, in 2006, I discovered Commons and started to contribute the first photos.

I practise photography as a hobby for several years now and it still keeps providing me constantly with new challenges. I enjoy photographing moving objects (mostly cars) same as cities, humans, landscapes, nature and animals. Photography really is a versatile hobby and that is also why I enjoy it so much. Besides that I love to travel, which fits very well to my photography hobby. My passion for travelling and foreign countries is also the reason why I chose AngMoKio as my Commons user name. Ang Mo Kio is a part of Singapore, where I worked for some time.

你好。我是宏茂侨。我是德国人。我住在德国的南部。我喜欢亚洲。我学了一年的汉语。我的汉语不好。 :-)

My equipment:
So far I only have Canon equipment, which never really disappointed me - furthermore it is the presidents choice ;-).

  • Canon EOS 40D
  • Lenses:
Canon 24-105mm f/4L
Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6
Canon 50mm f/1.8
  • For some of my older photos I used Canon EOS 350D + 17-85mm f/4-5.6, Canon A80 or Canon Ixus

Benh Lieu Song

Background

I'm a 29 years old programmer living in Marne-la-Vallée, in the suburbs of Paris. I started photography with an Olympus D40-Z compact camera and later got into panoramas. I realised how far we can go after I came across a POD showing a panorama of Sydney harbour on english Wikipedia. I decided I could try to do the same and that instead of keeping my pictures for myself, I could give them to Wikipedia which is so useful to me.

I shoot mainly landscape panoramas, with a preference for night architecture shots.

I use a Canon EOS 400D most of the time with an EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 and a Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 lenses, and am very pleased with the results. I use and try to promote free softwares for post processing. They include Gimp, Hugin, Enblend, Enfuse and ImageMagick.

Böhringer Friedrich (Fred)

Background

Background

My name is Christian Mehlführer and I am from Vienna, Austria. I am currently working towards my PhD degree in Communications Engineering at the Vienna University of Technology.
I started with digital photography a few years ago with a Minolta Dimage S414 which I replaced by a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-F828 soon. In March 2006 I finally bought my first DSLR and—over the time—several lenses.
I love traveling to far destinations where I take most of my nature images which I contribute to Commons. A passion of mine is high resolution panorama photography for which I am using the Nodal Ninja [1] nodal point adapter on my Manfrotto tripod and PTGUI [2] for stitching. At some time in the next years I want to create my first gigapixel panorama...

David Iliff (Diliff)

Background

I'm a 28 year old Australian from Melbourne currently living in London, England.

I've always enjoyed photography, messing around with video cameras and SLRs since I was a kid, but it wasn't until digital cameras started to become (relatively) affordable did I start to take photography seriously. I started off with a 3mp Kodak DC4800 in 2001, then moved up to a 5mp Nikon CP5000 in 2002 but very quickly hit the wall in terms of flexibility and in 2003, moved up in the world to a DSLR in the form of a Canon 10D when it was first released. Since then, I've built up over time a decent collection of quality Canon glass to support my addiction hobby. In 2005, I upgraded to the Canon 5D, a full frame camera. I eagerly await its imminent successor. ;-) While I've dabbled in a wide variety of photographic styles, my niche is high resolution stitched panoramic/mosaic landscapes and cityscapes, as demonstrated by my contributions to Wiki.

I'm amused and honoured to be the apparent inspiration for Benh Lieu Song's photography.;-)

I am active mostly on the English Wikipedia but of course upload all my images to the Commons for use on other Wiki Projects.

My equipment includes:

  • Canon EOS 5D
  • 17-40mm f/4L lens, 24-105mm f/4L lens, 50mm f/1.8 lens, 85mm f/1.8 lens, 100mm f/2.8 macro lens and 70-200mm f/2.8L lens.

Peter

Background

I'm a Yr 12 high school student in Victoria, Australia. I live in the country and hence a lot of my photography is to do with nature.
I've been contributing to Wikipedia since August 2004, if you're incredibly bored one damp evening you can read a little spiel I wrote on my first wiki-bday. I started off in photography with an el cheapo Kodak LS633 which turned out to be very good in most respects except for a complete lack of any manual control! With a bit of creative use though it managed to produce a few decent pix.
I took quite a leap really in the camera hierachy when I got a Canon 20D back in April 2005. For a year or so afterwards I was very prolific, clocking up over a thousand photos. However with real life (ie schoolwork!) making more demands on my time my output somewhat dwindled, I think my total of date is slightly under 2000 photos. Check out this for a full list
Equipment: Canon 20D, Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Canon 17-40 f/4L, Canon 85 f/1.8, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L, Sigma 150 macro f/2.8, Canon 580EX shoe flash, Canon TC-80N remote release, Slik Pro 700DX, 2x2GB 80x flash cards.

Luca Galuzzi

Background

I am LucaG, a software engineer from the Milano area, Italy.
Despite the beautiful locations in my country, rich in historic sites and monuments as well as crowded fashion events, my favorite locations to photograph are deserts and very high plateaus.
I'm "on top of the world" when waiting, in silence and solitude, for the right light on wide open lands, short of breath because of a rarefied atmosphere but under the deep blue sky at an altitude above 4000m.

I go digital and I develop my RAW files with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop but I'm not a fan of digital over improving. I do prefer a grainy, slightly out-of-focus image with a great emotional appeal rather then a plastic, sharp, ice-cold image.
I've been contributing to Commons with my photographs since december 2006 when studying countries like Tibet, Bolivia and Lybia on Wikipedia I noticed a lack of landscape images on related pages.

My photo gear: Canon EOS 400D, Canon 10-22 mm, Canon 17-85 mm, Canon 70-200 mm, Canon 50 mm, Canon 420EX flash and the essential Manfrotto Carbon Fiber Tripod with Proball Quick Release Head.

Richard Bartz aka Makro Freak

Background

My name is Richard Bartz and was born 1976 in Munich, Germany. I work as an Artist/Musican and have a profound love for mountain climbing.

My road to photography
Being a kid I always kept a magnifying glass with me, a present from my grandpa. With the years passing by, and me getting older, this glass was falling more and more into oblivion but somehow it kept staying on my mind for all of this time. After retiring from my job as a visual EFX supervisor last year, and having a lot of free time as an aftereffect of this, i had the chance to go walking out in the woods and mountains of my childhood together with my dog, a Sibirian Husky, feeling like the ten year old boy with his grandfathers magnifying lens again. Though being a few years older now gives me the chance to give in to my childhood dreams and so instead of this simple childs toy, these days i prefer having my Canon Eos 400d with me, coupled with a formidable MP-E65mm lens.

Keeping the fascination for delving into the microcosms of our imminent surroundings since my childhood, my primary mission is to let other people have a chance to peek into those small worlds through my photographic works, something you usually fail to notice in your day to day life, even if you are having a walk through the woods yourself. My almost fanatical urge to take things 'micro', and convert them to our usual 'macro'-world is the reason why i took the alias of 'Makro Freak' on Wikipedia.

In my personal view, if life treats you nice, you should give something of this luck over to other people. Being a professional in Graphics and Visual EFX for over a decade, this as a chance for me to give something small back to the people through contributing some of my photographs to Wikipedia. I started doing contributions on Wikimedia Commons at 22:26, 8 May 2007.

I have a M.Sc. in biology, but am currently studying to become a school teacher. I've been contributing to the danish Wikipedia and related projects since December 2002. I am an amateur photographer. I like to photograph nature (primarily animals) and whatever motives I pass, that I think might be useful on Wikipedia. Some of my best pictures are "lucky" snapshots. I also like the work in the "digital darkroom" editing and improving my pictures.

As a contributor to the danish Wikipedia it is natural to submit my pictures on Commons hoping my pictures are of use in other Wikipedias and Wikimedia projects. Indeed this is a major motivation factor for me to go on photo safari.

I'm a physicist by profession and I'm working in the field of information sciences. My main hobby is working on Free Software in the Debian GNU/Linux Distribution where I started the Debian-Med project. My second hobby is taking nature photos. I do this in my holidays exclusively and I'm a conservative photographer that sticks to using slides for his "real photos". As a consequence some of my uploaded images are not as good as the original slide would allow because the process of digitising was done automatically via Kodak Photo CD where not every single image gets the subtlety it would deserve. In case I will find some more time I might redo some scans manually but this is nothing that will happen soon.

I am a sociologist and taught humanities and photography for many years. Currently I work in the water sector in Mexico.

For me photography is a discipline with a wide range of considerations: historical, cultural, sociological and aesthetical. Photography must be analyzed within each particular context, with no particular platform of analysis having a preponderance over the others.

I have been contributing images to Wikipedia for a couple of years with the firm belief of Wikipedia´s ideals and the possibility to create a source of knowledge in a scale and accesibility never before seen in history, taking advantage of the opportunity of the technologial advances that made the Internet possible.

I see this effort as an ongoing and evolving social phenomena of extraordinary opportunity for the good of mankind, and photography, as well as other forms of graphic information, is a part of the overall endeavor.
