Hi Magog the Ogre,

I did not receive any result in User:Geagea/Israel from since March 11, 2016. Stoped to work? -- Geagea (talk) 06:40, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

@Geagea: yes, the bot has been stumbling due to subcategory changes. It tried to notify you but it failed due to a bug. I have just attempted a fix. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 13:20, 20 March 2016 (UTC)

i have really no idea, where i can write and find the deletion-discussion. commons is not userfriednly. the photograph of this picture was murderer 1944, so this picture is for free. bute in the licence text is no opt ion only für - photograph died 70 years before, so what kind of licence i have tu use for this??--Gedenksteine (talk) 07:20, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

@Gedenksteine: I'm not really following what you're saying. Could you please try your question at Commons:Forum (the German-speaking help desk)? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 11:11, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
i dont understand, that you not understand. the photograph of the picture, you wanted to delete, is dead since over 70 years, so its free for use. i iploaded, but there was only an option "dead since more than 70 years AND published before 1923, so i could not use this licence-text and i chosed another reason "Urheber wurde 1944 ermordet" = Photograph was murdered 1944, so the picture is free to use. tell me what i can do? i can't understand you deletion-request.--Gedenksteine (talk) 21:39, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
I didn't understand you because your English is bad, so I provided a link where you can ask in German. I understand this time. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:02, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Copy and paste moves

OK, I understand. The problem with the file solved or should I do something now? You generally talk about my future uploads? --IM-yb (talk) 14:48, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

@IM-yb: yeah it's good now, I was just referring to future uploads. If you get in a real pinch you can use the {{Move}} template, which ports the file history with it, thus avoiding any of the pesky attribution problems. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:12, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Sorry for the mistake, i corrected it. --Marianne Casamance (talk) 17:14, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Sock

This may be a dumb post; I noticed User:Michaeltrio and User:Rajasingh123 were tagged with {{Sockpuppet}} but are unblocked, is that a concern? I'm going to guess that there is an underlying rangeblock so it doesn't matter, but I thought I'd ask anyways. :) Riley Huntley (talk) 22:45, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Xavier Badia photos of Ciutat de Granada Street

Hi, I'm helping Xavier Badia who for years has documented the Poblenou industrial neighbour in Barcelona, to upload, describe and categorize his photos on Commons. The project is: ca:VP:Badia. I've seen that recently you removed several photos but I can understand why. He is using Vicuña to prepare the uploads. Maybe he forgot to put the permission advice in this group of photos? However he is going to upload them again, taking care to don't forget anything. You can see the OTRS ticket here. If there is any comment or incident in his uploads please contact or ping me. Thanks. --Dvdgmz (talk) 07:43, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

Yesterday before I read your message I already found the person who own the house, an old man who doesn't have email, facebook, twitter, or any other media social unless that he still read newspaper and hear radio and television. I don't have enough courage to asked him to wrote a letter of his agreement because he thought it wasn't necessary to have any copyright and he doesn't want to be burdened by that and because the picture was made to give a "free" advice to the youngsters. So, can you help me to find the "right" copyright for my case? Or I just delete it and store it to the Indonesian wikipedia instead? If your advise is the last option, it's a pity because "the world" will lost one of some indigenous art and culture of Java, but it's ok, too as long as I can still put it in Indonesian Wikipedia, so it won't lost from our local culture. I already searched the best copyright for this pic for an hour, and did many changes if you see the history. Either Wiki Commons lacks of copyright tag types, or we Indonesian just very lack of the need of copyright -or both, if you can say that. Thank you for your reply and "best" advise :) Okkisafire (talk) 00:02, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre: I think you can delete the pic for now. Some days ago I already found that the murals (more than 1) are the project of local governmental community (I don't know the term in English, but it is the smallest governmental community in Indonesia which is called Rukun Tetangga (RT) consist of some few households). I have no time to ask the head of this RT10 until now, I'm still very busy doing my thesis etc. I'll upload later after I meet and ask the permission of the head of RT10 ;). Proper license for image

Hi there. I noticed that you left a message regarding a picture i uploaded. Instead of just pointing out the problem, could you help me solve it? :)

The file in question is the following: File:Lenore-Kirchbach.jpg

The original author of the image is Category:Frank_Kirchbach - I'm sure that one of the licenses for his other similar works will fit the one I uploaded, as it was published back in 1896.

Bot messages

Hi there. Regarding this message. Perhaps it would be a good idea to check whether the file in question hasn't been nominated by the uploader before asking for licenses. The file is already there on Commons with a proper name and license and the wrong ones are nominated for deletion (should be speedy). Don't get me wrong, I don't mind, it's just a waste of your time :) Halibutt (talk) 10:07, 5 May 2016 (UTC)

--Historiograf (talk) 17:38, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

@Historiograf: it is a Commons requirement that you, the uploader, properly license an image. As a courtesy, I will fix any obvious mistakes, but it's impossible when there are dozens of problematic files. If you don't upload your own image properly, that's not my problem, it's yours. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:46, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

91.9.111.252 10:47, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

@Slav4: stop violating Commons rules about posting images without licensing, permission, or source and I will stop posting on your page. If OTRS is pending, you can mark an image with {{subst:OP}}. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:10, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
And just to clarify, I would just mark you images as missing copyright and not mark your talk page but this option is not available in VisualFileChange. I suppose you can ask User:Rillke although I doubt he will want to spend time implementing a feature to help people not be notified that you're breaking policy. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:16, 14 May 2016 (UTC)
It is you who waste your time and also mine. I already updated hundreds of pictures, and they all have the appropriate license. Please stop it. user:slav4 21:37, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I would like to ask you a question. Need we permission of photographer to upload an image like this: hu:Fájl:Bo 873 hettita agyagtábla.jpg? The reason why I ask you because I think this image is copyright violation, but I'm not sure. What do you think? --Regasterios (talk) 23:24, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

@Regasterios: yes, we do. See COM:ART#Photograph of an old coin found on the Internet. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:13, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

PD files - fowiki2commons

Can your bot move the PD files that are in

to Commons? 91.9.111.252 10:56, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

If not, is there any tool that can do it? 91.9.116.24 09:55, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry for the long response time. My bot isn't configured to transfer in mass. I recommend For the Common Good, which is configured to do it in mass. If that doesn't work, let me know. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 23:12, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I don't want to install software. Do you know how to find users that might be happy to run that tool on fowiki? Would you do it? Template:PD-Faroe Islands50 already exists in Commons. 91.9.126.111 14:14, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

List of Wikipedias having zero local media files

FYI : meta:List of Wikipedias having zero local media files. Thanks for all you work on file transfer. 91.9.111.252 10:58, 9 May 2016 (UTC)

What were you hoping I do with this list? Pardon me; I'm not trying to be obtuse. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:10, 13 May 2016 (UTC)
Was just meant to highlight how many only use Commons for their files and so can better benefit from Commons and Wikidata. If there is any local file, it could always block a file in Commons that is referred to by Wikidata. I would like if more could be set to zero local files. There are 100 Wikipedias having 1 to 999 local files, several of them could have their local files copied to Commons and the local copies be deleted.
  1. 0 files : 107
  2. 1-9 files : 5
  3. 10-99 files : 30
  4. 100-999 files : 65
  5. 1000-9999 files : 51
  6. 10000-99999 files : 30
  7. 100000+ : 4 (de,it,ru,en)
I think I have seen that a bot of you did transfers, so maybe the list and the idea behind it could be a motivation to do more. If not, then still thanks a lot for all your work on transfers. 91.9.126.111 14:09, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

File tagging issue

Rafael Rangel

Hola, Magog.

--C. Jonel [talk] 16:27, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

@C. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 16:59, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
:D --C. Jonel [talk] 17:36, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
@C. Jonel: He subido las primeras cuatro: File:Luis Razetti.jpg‎, File:Rafael Rangel 2.jpg, File:Rafael Rangel 3.jpg, File:Eusebio Rangel Moreno.jpg.
Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:03, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
Gracias Magog. Descuida, yo las subo siguiendo tu procedimiento. :) --C. Jonel [talk] 02:35, 23 May 2016 (UTC)

Image Issue

Hello there, I have been kindly directed to contact a member with OTRS privileges about an image on an article that I am involved with. The image is that of an old coin from Ancient Rome, the image has been checked by OTRS at ticket #2006092710009217. However, the image is missing author info, can you or somebody at OTRS please check the author info and fix the error tag?

Hi, may I ask, if the above picture can be uploaded to Commons? --Regasterios (talk) 21:05, 29 May 2016 (UTC)

@Regasterios: that file was uploaded after the cutoff date for Commons:Grandfathered old files, so I'm thinking no, unfortunately. I've reached out the uploader to ask for further assistance. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:20, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi! I was wondering if it was possible for you to add a feature to OgreBot's new user gallery that detects whether the users in question have a large number of edits on wikis other than Commons. For instance, I'm nearing 20K edits on ENWP myself; maybe a threshold right around there would work. Instead of adding all images from users with <150 edits on here, it could just add images from users with <150 edits on here and with <20K edits (or whatever threshold is eventually decided on) on their home wiki (which can be checked with a simple CentralAuth API call). What do you think about this idea? Enterprisey (talk) 00:47, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

@Enterprisey: the last I checked the API doesn't support that function, surprisingly. Do you know where it does? It would be especially helpful if it supports it en masse. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:52, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Also, if you are concerned about your uploads in particular, try User:OgreBot/gallery-opt-out. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 00:54, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
This call gets the home wiki, and this call gets the edit count. Are those the API calls you were thinking about? Enterprisey (talk) 00:59, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
@Enterprisey: is there any documentation for globaluserinfo? This should be doable. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:04, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
I found some at mw:Extension:CentralAuth/API and https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=help&modules=query%2Bglobaluserinfo, but neither go into exhaustive detail. Enterprisey (talk) 01:14, 30 May 2016 (UTC)

Moving files to commons

(Sorry for cross posting) Magog, I find it fun and creative to move files from EnWiki to commons, and have a couple of questions; where do I insert the java script at en:Wikipedia:Moving_files_to_Commons#Tools? I also fell it would make sense to rename a lot of the files on enWiki before transferring to commons, a Change from completely meaningless names into suitable name, since afterwards, when the file is uploaded to commons, renaming a file just makes a lot of extra work? Dan Koehl (talk) 14:22, 1 June 2016 (UTC)

@Dan Koehl: you can insert the Javascript in w:Special:MyPage/common.js. And you can rename on Commons because I have a tool that I use to fix the links. Just make sure you tag the image with the new name. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:15, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi, Magog - actually File:Xiao Long Bao dumplings Small.jpg is properly noted that it was derived from another file on Commons under a CC-BY-SA 2.0 license. What is it exactly that you need me to do? Atsme 📞 04:51, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

@Atsme: I wasn't sure if you had touched it up at all, but upon closure inspection, it looks like you just downsized it, so I've deleted it as a duplicate. The bot should replace it at the correct resolution within a few minutes. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 04:58, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
Please ignore all that. I see you touched it up. Could you please add a license indicating your copyright of the derivative work? The same as the original license should do. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 05:00, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
See this diff [20] as it is what I had on it before the first delete warning. Surely there must be an easier way to make a derivative work of a CC-BY-SA 2.0 without having to jump through hoops. That's what I get for taking a bite out of those dumplings. Atsme 📞 05:06, 9 June 2016 (UTC)
@Atsme: usually you just add the same license back to the page. I don't think that's too difficult, honestly. We used to have a tool that automated even that but it is gone. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:55, 11 June 2016 (UTC)
Ok, I agree with you that it should not be too difficult but please look at my original upload here. I did add the license and what I thought was the proper info in the description box from the very beginning, but then FlickreviewR 2 tagged it as an undeterminable license. Perhaps I added too much information for the license? Thanks in advance. Atsme 📞 03:04, 11 June 2016 (UTC)
@Atsme: Flickrreview bot will get confused if the image isn't a bit-for-bit copy of one of the sizes already on Flickr. You can leave that out or wait for an image reviewer to come along and update. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:33, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

Mokau bridge

You say, "If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the OTRS system and follow the procedure described there."

However, I've stated the source and that the source says, "No known copyright". So why ask for information which I've already given?Johnragla (talk) 05:12, 9 June 2016 (UTC)

@Johnragla: As stated on the message, each image must have an appropriate copyright tag. A textual description is not enough. I added one this time.[21] Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:01, 11 June 2016 (UTC)

@TripWire: if there is an edit dispute about a speedy deletion claim, usually the best course of action is to just nominate it for deletion and to have a discussion. You can still do that now. N/A authors

Hello Magog. I noticed you recently had OgreBot 2 change "N/A" to "{{unknown|author}}" in author fields. I'm not sure that this is such a great idea, because the term "N/A" is ambiguous. Sometimes "N/A" means "not available" (in which case it's probably safe to assume that the author really is unknown) but sometimes it means "not applicable", meaning that there is no meaningful sense in which the resource can be attributed to a particular author. That is, for the second case, the author is not unknown; rather, it is known that there is no author. Since there is no way for a bot to distinguish between the two senses of "N/A", I don't think it should be changing these authorship tags. Would you consider reverting the changes it recently made? —Psychonaut (talk) 11:07, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Soft rangeblock?

Hi Magog. Over the past couple weeks I've seen numerous vandal/disruptive DRs of sex-related material coming from 63.143.64.0/18 ([22], [23] for example). Can you see if a 1 month soft rangeblock would be safe for this range and put that block in place if so? Thanks for your time. INeverCry 03:52, 15 June 2016 (UTC)

@INeverCry: I did a 15 day block. There were definitely good edits coming from logged in users while almost all of the edits from logged out users were junk. Here's hoping that it's just a low energy vandal or vandals that won't bother with registering. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:29, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Map Data

Hi,

I am looking for the data you used to create the Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting goods Location maps. I would really appreciate it if you can provide this data or point me in the direction where I can find it.

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.70.10.194 (talk) 19:03, June 13, 2016‎ (UTC)

It involves some website scraping. In the case of Dick's, IIRC they used a third party which had a public API exposed. I don't have that data off hand but I can get that data for you. What sort of timeframe do you need it under? Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:22, 16 June 2016 (UTC)
Hi Magog, Thanks for the reply. I don't want to burden you with this. If it is quick and easy for you to obtain then I would greatly appreciate the help but honestly if this takes you more than a few minutes then don't bother.
Some retailers, such as Hibbett Sports, freely provide this information in excel on their websites. In the case of Dick's, I've actually attempted to contact the company's Investor Relations but their reply was: "Please refer to our store locator tool to identify our current locations." Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.70.10.194 (talk) 13:15, June 16, 2016‎ (UTC)

@INeverCry: can you give more information on that? I have no prior experience with Albianmoonlight. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:21, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
He did uploads like this where he's hiding his face in his hands, or he did pics where he was standing naked on a beach with his back to the camera (we called him the "beach bum"). He would then put the images in articles and various pages on other wikis. I don't want you to waste your time, but you'd find several versions of the above "distressed man" image in the deleted uploads of AM's various socks (the guy in the pic is Albianmoonlight himself). I'm OCD, so I tend to mentally catalogue these old sock masters. His name is David Horvitz: Commons:Requests for checkuser/Case/Albianmoonlight. He's an occasional nuisance, but nothing to worry about too much anymore. I may have left some old info on him at cu.wiki. Here's the first mass DR: Commons:Deletion requests/Files by User:Albianmoonlight, and there's about 80 others: [24]. @Ellin Beltz: might recognize File:20160416- DSC5229.jpg.
