First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hello, Philip.t.day!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Royal College of Music logo.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

  • This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: COM:F1 This non-trivial copyrighted logo is taken from the college, and is thus a clear copyright violation. (The description here even explicitly claims to be from there)
This logo is copyrighted because it is non-trivial, it an artistic design, not simple simple geometric shapes. Commons doesn't allow for COM:FAIRUSE imagery; if you wish to upload fair use imagery, please do so the relevant Wikipedia, and even then only if it is used there. Images on Commons must instead be free-use. To permit this image on Commons, it either be clearly marked with a Creative Commons-like free use license, or go through the COM:OTRS process.
Although heraldic blazons are not copyright, their renditions are. That means that this particular drawing of the heraldic emblem is not permitted, however, if the blazon (positioning and colouring of items) behind the coat of arms were re-rendered under a free-use license, it may be permitted on Commons. This is detailed under Commons:Coats of arms, which outlines the distinctions. Unfortunately, although this looks like a coat of arms, there is no evidence it actually has a blazon to re-render.
On Commons, the burden of proof for license COM:EVIDence is on the uploader. That means this image should be deleted, and recreated when the uploader returns with evidence, rather than leaving it until evidence is provided. Shadowssettle (talk) 08:47, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Shadowssettle (talk) 08:47, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment, Shadowssettle. I have contacted the college to request written permission for their logo to be used on this platform. I will update the image with their response. If written consent is withheld I will take the image down, else I will update appropriately with proof of consent. Philip.t.day (talk) 10:47, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, there has been quite a lot of this going round uni/coll. logos and coats of arms, and I've tried to do a second clean up spree which this got caught in; it's nothing personal against this image. You might want to consider finding a blazon for it, and recreating the blazon in vector graphics, which may be more useful, and would hopefully avoid the copyright issues (unless you trace/copy any copyrighted rendition). You might also wish instead to upload it to any Wikipedia using it if that is the purpose of the upload, as they allow fair use imagery if (and only if) it is used on an article, and necessary.
As per COM:EVID, unfortunately the speedy delete should proceed (and go through) until you find such permission. Feel free to reupload it, or request undeletion once such license is provided. Shadowssettle (talk) 11:27, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi shadowssettle, I have gained permission from RCM by email. Could you advise on how to demonstrate this on the image / re-uploaded version? I don't want to get this wrong. Cheers Philip.t.day (talk) 10:21, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
