Goodies, tips, and tricks Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities. You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads. Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~. To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg. You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account. There are several tools to upload files. Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful. Made a mistake? Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that. The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. The Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content. We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules. In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions. Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

Wikipedia Commons' Permission Requirements

There's something wrong when book cover images are freely used by the following sources: • Amazon.com • Google books • Barnes and Noble.com • Bowker (handles online and printed Books in Print) • Baker & Taylor (the major wholesaler of books to libraries) • Ingram (the major wholesalers to bookstores), and used book sites such as: • Alibris • Abebooks and • Biblio.com, and then Wikipedia comes along and asks for a formal permission to be entered.

I think Wikipedia's administrative body needs to discuss this issue in general. Wikipedia administrators don't seem to realize that publishers want images of their book covers made available to the general public; this is a form of indirect advertisement for the book and can only result in good (e.g., possible sales for the book in question). It's not remotely the same as another publisher stealing the book cover (as if they could do this from front-cover images that are way too small for printing!) for their own edition of the book (i.e., stealing the copyrighted book itself).Ronterp (talk) 16:01, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
