Known bugs and common errors

  1. Subtitles are not imported https://github.com/toolforge/video2commons/issues/148
Since circa 2020, subtitles have not been automatically imported even if the option is selected. Unknown cause, possibly bug in codes. Is this software still maintained?[edit]

Hello,

I repeatedly get "Error: Something went wrong while uploading... try again?"

Should I report this and if so how can I get the detailed error message please? Or is this software no longer maintained? Chidgk1 (talk) 07:31, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you provide more info? Uploads of more than 600MB (the transcoded webm, not the original mp4) will often fail, >900 will fail nearly always. It looks like the uploading of a chunk fails. That is not the fault of v2c, but mediawiki. --C.Suthorn (talk) 10:55, 1 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It is about 2 seconds of video from my iphone - about 2.4 MB of .mov - do you know how I can get a more detailed error message please? I rarely have any problem uploading photos but this is the first time I have tried to upload video. When I tried directly from the iphone it just hung so I copied the file to my Chromebook and from there got the above error. Just tried again now from Chromebook and the progress bar went quickly to 100% uploaded then it said "Error: Something went wrong while uploading... try again?". Whereas from iphone bar goes to 100% then it shows the loading icon fora few mins then gives message. So it seems there might be something wrong with the progress bar too. Chidgk1 (talk) 18:45, 6 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm also having a problem uploading videos directly, looking at uploads they're all imported media from websites, none are from local files.Dr-Mx (talk) 18:49, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Same here. Stops at 7% - after a while the error message reads: "Error: Something went wrong while uploading... try again?" - hope its just temporary, but have Commonist in mind i fear its a again the same "improvement" of some software ...Sicherlich talk 20:34, 7 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've got around the issue by uploading my mp4 file to a web server and pointing Video2commons to that. Not great, but it works. Dr-Mx (talk) 01:11, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
oh i'm not the only one.
mine stopped at 4%. it's a 94mb mp4.
i guess it must be a very specific bug, because i've tried both pc and mobile browsers, chrome and firefox, and they all stopped at 4% for my video. RZuo (talk) 16:24, 10 March 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

V2c still maintained?[edit]

V2c has been written by one user. This user participated last year in an argument about the CU blocking of another user and was unhappy with the outcome of the argument. Them user page says, the user is no longer active at commons and there actually is very few activity by the user since. Some edits about POTY voting, some phabricator comments, but not much else. There have been no commits by the user to v2c at github since 2020 (and other github users mainly only contributed to translation). It looks like this tool has become a zombie and another commited user has been alienated and left the project. --C.Suthorn (talk) 12:42, 1 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

That is unfortunate, and a bit of a problem I would say. Video usage on WM seems to be growing, it appears to be very popular on pages where it is deployed, at least from the stats, albeit these may be misleading. If we want users to import video tho, tools like this are incredibly important. I could point people to this tool, and expect them to use it, but explaining how to download YT files with websites, then convert to WebM with Handbrake, extract subtitle files, walk through through the nineteen fields of the upload tool, etc. would be wasting my time. --JimKillock (talk) 17:31, 1 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

[Feature request] test file name before confirm[edit]

it would be best if the tool will test whether a file with the same name as what you fill in the form already exists, and display a link to that file. this way it's easy to check if a video has already been imported in its name. RZuo (talk) 12:27, 22 April 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File not found[edit]

I am trying to upload from the disk and I am receiving an error File not found. How to debug? --Juandev (talk) 09:30, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The maintainer of v2c seems to have left. So proably there is no way to debug. You could say the file size and file type, also if the filename contains "funny" characters and the encoding and encoder of the file. you could upload a screenshot of the error. You could encode the file to webm (vp9) locally and upload with another upload tool. C.Suthorn (talk) 12:19, 3 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The maintainer of v2c has left the project. Therefore this will most likely not be fixed. It looks like your file contains in the metadata a text string with ISO8859 encoded letters and this is interpreted by v2c as unicode and rejected. Remove the metadata and your upload will probably work. v2c would remove the metadata, if it could read them. --C.Suthorn (talk) 20:31, 8 June 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Error uploading file from computer[edit]

Good day. I am trying to upload a mp4 video (502 Mb) from my local PC, but no matter what I try I keep getting the error "Error: An exception occurred: FileNotFoundError: b"[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/data/project/video2commons/video2commons/frontend/static/uploads/66607222-03a3-11ed-921f-82d0630f66a4'" during the upload process. Anyone understand this error and how to get around it? Huntster (t @ c) 18:42, 14 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This may be a temporary malfunction of the tool. Otherwise only the maintainer of v2c can fix it. If you want to get the file uploaded soon, your best bet would be to transcode the file to webm locally, than upload with any other tool. --C.Suthorn (talk) 19:24, 14 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah, hopefully that's the case. Unfortunately uploading locally doesn't seem to be an option either; I have a webm version of the file, and Upload Wizard errors out as well. Oh well. Huntster (t @ c) 21:30, 14 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Huntster: A MW-server has been restarted. Uploading with Upload Wizard should work again. --C.Suthorn (talk) 06:38, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yep, converted one of the files last night. Thanks for the update. Btw, do you know if the 4Gb upload limit imposed by Chunked also applies to this tool? Huntster (t @ c) 14:18, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Huntster: I believe that is imposed by the backend filesystem.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:24, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, Jeff! Huntster (t @ c) 16:28, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Actually the limit is imposed by the MW database storing file size as a 32bit unsigned integer value (=4GiB). The whole DB scheme of MW needs to be evaluated/changed (to 64bit integer for file size) to overcome this limit. --C.Suthorn (talk) 04:32, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Very interesting. Has there been any serious consideration express by WM toward updating to 64 bit? Huntster (t @ c) 06:18, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Huntster: I don't know. Considering by Commons:Village_pump#MP4_patents_expiration_date, user:Donald Trungs remark about MP4, I doubt that there will be done something soon. However the Offroader upload tool splits video files into parts of less than 4GiB before upload. --C.Suthorn (talk) 12:57, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That's very true. The lack of Foundation support for things like this is frustrating, considering MP4 being the dominant video format and the resources required to properly convert to another format. Offroader looks very useful but I don't use a mobile device for editing or for file storage. Insert sadface. Huntster (t @ c) 17:26, 18 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Unfortunately, getting the same error again. If restarting the MW server is what fixes this, would it be possible to create a regular restart schedule? Huntster (t @ c) 22:49, 26 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Getting this error as well just now. Vera (talk) 15:40, 26 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm having issues with uploading of video files to WIkimedia commons using video2commons[edit]

Hi, I've been trying to upload a couple of video files using the video2commons, but it's been returning error messages stopping me from moving ahead with the task. Is there another way of getting it done? Please, folks, I need your help. The files were converted from MP4 to Mweb before the upload. See the error here."Error: An exception occurred: FileNotFoundError: b"[Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/data/project/video2commons/video2commons/frontend/static/uploads/6ec04b3a-1268-11ed-aa9c-82d0630f66a4'".13:41, 2 August 2022 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Olaniyan Olushola (talk • contribs)

@Olaniyan Olushola: Are these files already online somewhere?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:46, 2 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Jeff, the files are not online; they are not yet published anywhere and are stored away on my hard drive. There are over 60 files in MP4 format; I need to convert them one after the other to the required format before the upload if I use the upload wizard. So far, I have converted less than ten files, and I still have a long way to go. Each file comes with an average size of 40MB. So, I am looking for a tool where I won't do the conversion Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 17:21, 2 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You don't need to use video2commons, if your files are already transcoded to webm and local files. You can use any upload tool (for example Upload Wizard). What is the file size of the videos? --C.Suthorn (talk) 16:33, 2 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
There are 60+files and each has an average size of 40MB. Olaniyan Olushola (talk) 17:23, 2 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Gabriel Classon, Chicocvenancio, and Martin Urbanec: could you please help update v2c's youtube-dl to a new version as per https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/issues/31530#Description ? thx a lot.
quoting @dirkf's 19 feb message for the record

The problem, which was revealed by a change in the metadata served by YouTube, applied to both youtube-dl and yt-dlp and has been fixed in both programs.
There is a release of yt-dlp that includes the fix. See #31535 for discussion of whether this would be a good choice for you.
See below for ways to update to a fixed version of youtube-dl. Using -U doesn't (yet) work. A new release may be created, including the final fix, some time later than now.

sorry for the ping. with my very limited coding skills i took a quick look at v2c codes. it seems it'll be too troublesome to update it manually. i guess we should just wait for youtube-dl update, unless changing youtube-dl to yt-dlp is feasible.--RZuo (talk) 19:13, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

TypeError: b 'NoneType' object is not iterable[edit]

Hi, I saw a new (to me) error: An exception occurred: TypeError: b"'NoneType' object is not iterable"

Context/Reproduction-steps: I was trying to upload a file from GoogleDrive, if that's relevant? It initially recognized the file-type, and let me fill in the {information} box, but then once it was in the 2nd-step on the Task screen it failed after a few seconds.

I've added a mention on the project page, with an empty "Meaning" parameter. I didn't see the error mentioned above or in the archives. Thanks. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 22:56, 23 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I get Error: An exception occurred: DownloadError: b'ERROR: Unable to extract uploader id. RodRabelo7 (talk) 04:50, 3 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This error has occurred before. I assume you're trying to upload from YouTube? YouTube doesn't like direct downloads of videos from its platform, and tries to keep up with blocking software that allows this to happen. Video2commons uses youtube-downloader to extract videos from YouTube, which itself keeps updating to outpace YouTube blocking it. Seems it's in a down period at the moment. You can report the issue, but they're probably aware. Kingsif (talk) 02:25, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Kingsif, you’re right. I’m trying to upload from YouTube. Still not working, unfortunately. RodRabelo7 (talk) 10:30, 10 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

What the deal is with not being able to extract uploader ID[edit]

I want to start a discussion about this. @Llywelyn2000 has posted on Commons talk:YouTube files that they tried contacting the developer of Video2commons with no luck. youtube-dl itself hasn't updated since 2021. The alternative youtube2mediawiki hasn't been updated since 2015, so there's no alternative avenue either.

From all the error logs it seems this is an issue with youtube-dl, and I think I have a theory as to why it's broken, namely that YouTube has sort of stopped using channel IDs and switched to a Twitter-like @ system. Though, honestly, knowing what's broken helps us very little. Our only real hope is to contact "Ricardo Garcia Gonzalez" or one of the other "youtube-dl developers."

I'd like this thread to remain open to anybody with ideas on potential solutions to this problem, as several people have posted here with a desire to upload videos but can't because of the current tools being broken. Any ideas on solutions or ways to move forward would be greatly appreciated.

Mentioning some people who may want to participate in this discussion: @Kingsif @HeminKurdistan @Rzuo OmegaFallon (talk) 00:52, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I want to also state that although my technical knowledge is limited I have tried youtube2mediawiki and youtube-dl via the command line on my Windows machine, the former of which gave me syntax errors suggesting that it's incompatible with the 3.11 version of Python I'm running, and the later of which gave me the same error we're all getting with Video2commons, i.e. the uploader ID error. So I'm nearly certain this isn't an issue with Video2commons, it's an issue with youtube-dl. OmegaFallon (talk) 00:55, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I deleted youtube-dl from my linux machine and installed new from github. I was not able to download videos that had been uploaded to youtube in the last week, and i was not able to download a 15 year old video. With the Android app "LibreTube" however, i can download youtube videos without problems. C.Suthorn (talk) 12:11, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Di was nice enough to direct me towards a useful tool: this site converts to WEBM without any strings attached as far as I can tell, other than it being a tad slow. This appears to be our best option currently. OmegaFallon (talk) 13:01, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
