HERMANOS tells in parallel the story of two Mexican brothers that want to go back to the US after being deported for life, with the story of an American woman who lost her house and today believes she can get it back through Trump’s promises. Their journeys take them on road trips to meet with their past and with relatives who they believe can help them achieve their dreams. Immigration has been shown in many ways, but it has never been presented through the lives of Mexicans and Americans who live similar situations due to poverty and lack of family structure.
Synopsis
Hermanos - Siblings portrays immigration between Mexico and the US through the intimate encounter of families who regardless of coming from Mexico or the US face similar troubles seeking the American Dream.
The film tells in parallel the story of two Mexican brothers that want to go back to the US illegally after being deported for life, with the story of an American woman who lost her house due to the world economic crisis and today believes she can get it back through Trump’s promises.
Their journeys take them on road trips to meet with their past and with relatives who they believe can help them achieve their dreams.
Chuy and Chato preparing their last attempt to cross to the US, meet their mother in Tijuana. The encounter provokes a shock that makes them question their life and what they are looking for.
Vanessa on her way back to the farm in Montana where she grew up, follows Trump’s campaign and rallies. The journey, and her return to her roots, opens wounds and raises questions that makes her realize what she’s really looking for.
The immigration theme has been shown in many ways, but it has never been presented through the encounter of families in Mexico and in the US, who regardless of coming from different backgrounds live similar situations due to poverty and lack of family structure.
“What is the American Dream?” Is a question that Hermanos-Siblings aims to ask the audience. Is it just a dream? Has it ever existed? And if it did, can people have it again?
In order to open the discussion further, the film is accompanied by a collage of portrait interviews from people who wish or have wished for the American Dream: Mexicans who have crossed illegally to the US, Latinos living in the US and Americans who wish for the American Dream to return.
To achieve a dream you first need to know the name of the dream.
