First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hi Shapinsky, and welcome to the Commons from me too. I notice you've been adding a lot of unexcisting categories to images here, mainly Category:pingnews, Category:shapinsky, Category:shapinsky.net, Category:david shapinsky and Category:pingnews.com. Categories here at wikimedia commons are not just general keywords associated with a mediafile or it's creator, but part of a category-tree that is intended for logical sorting of files. It is possible to add a category concerning creatorship of files, that should then be named Category:Files by user Shapinsky or category:Files from Shapinsky.net - the latter doesn't seem to apply however, it seems to me that most these files originate from Flickr.

I have had to remove the "categories" mentioned above, please feel free to ask if you need help finding a way to tag your contributions in correspondence with excisting policy at Commons. Regards, Finn Rindahl 11:17, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, second thoughts about in which order to do things... These four categories above will have to go, and I've started removing them. But to save both of us tedious work, it might be better to replace them with a new category or a template. If you would be so kind to explain how Shapinsky/pingnet is the source of these images are (photographer, Flickr uploader, or ...) and how you would prefer to have these images credited I could help you work out how to do that within the Commons system. Regards, Finn Rindahl 11:30, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Finnrind - The suggested credit line I include on all (or most) of pingnews photos is "(agency name) via pingnews" if it is a public domain file from let's say the Library of Congress or DOD. If there is a photographer associated, the credit is "photographer/agency name via pingnews." On photos that I take, these should be labeled by D.F. Shapinsky for pingnews/Shapinsky MultiMedia. Shapinsky multimedia runs pingnews.com as a public service. So the two sites that are associated are pingnews.com and shapinsky.net, the latter of which is the company site.

I would add that there is a lot of material besides photos available. Because of my background as an historian and a journalist, producer, etc. I've tried to make my professional experience more useful to people in general by helping them find things or creating video broll, music, sound effects, and more for them to use mostly under the same license. In addition, I've created special search tools that look at sites like wikimedia for media, other search engines that target reference, etc. PINGNews was begun as an experiment to see how much could be done using available free tools -- and with an emphasis on creating communities using existing structures like flickr. So there are lots of groups associated with pingnews, the usual multiple websites (like google video).

Whatever is appropriate as far as categories is fine with me. I actually stumbled upon a photo last night and became aware that there were many photos that came from pingnews on flickr but were not all clearly associated with each other. Someone else had already pulled out all the categories you mentioned and I simply copied them over to the other photos.

Anyway, my hope would simply be that the attribution reflect the "suggested credit" line with each photo and that people be able to find more photos easily through pingnews.

Let me know if I can help further.

cheers david

Hi David, it does seem we have a common agenda in making PD media accesible to the public . As i understand it, what matters here would be to give Pingnews it's due credit for making mediafiles avvailable, and giving our users a link to browse for additional PD-media that's not yet avvailable here. The original source, whether Library of Congress or yourself as photographer could be attributed the normal way, but we should probably have something in addition making it clear that it was made avvailable via Pingnews. For the images identified it could be something like template:ping
This Public Domain mediafile was made avvailable through Pingnews.com

(the layout, url and category name could of course be altered - it might be better to link directly to this for instance). I'm starting to believe, however, that we could be able to find a more systematic approach, to the benefit of both our projects and the public, than the occasional file being uploaded from Flickr to Commons. I will ask a more experienced administrator here to give advice on how we could best proceed. Regards, Finn Rindahl 16:52, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi David and Finn,
I suggest not using a category but a template. Also, don't tie the template to any particular license, because it looks like Pingnews stuff is available under multiple different licenses. So if you use a template to give information about attributing the source, then have a separate template for the license, that would be the best case, I think. Call it something like template:Source via PINGNews. You will be able to see which images are using the template by looking at Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:Source via PINGNews (or whatever). cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:38, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds fine to me. Just let me know what, if anything, I need to do, etc. Cheers -- David
I'll try to tag a template like Pfctdayelise describes to the images in question later today (bit busy right now), we can always change the layout&links in that template later if you want to. And I will probably sift through your files at Flickr at some point and look for some more treasures to use in Wikimedia projects ;) Regards, Finn Rindahl 06:49, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Made this for starters, you're free to change it (or ask me to do so). Adding it to the identified files now.

Looks great so far! Thanks.

PINGNews is an attempt to make resources more available using readily available resources. We ask that people using our materials recognize and respect copyright rules. This means, for instance, that public domain materials are labeled "public domain." We also encourage, however, that even when a photo is in the public domain that it include all available information. In most cases we provide this although we recognize that an entire catalog record may be too much for a citation. In these instances, we suggest at minimum that the user source the photographer's name and agency where the source was created or now resides.

The nature of copyright on flickr -- where most of our photos are located -- is that there has not been a "public domain" license available. As a result we label this information as clearly as possible. Please DO NOT CREDIT PINGNEWS for a public domain photo taken by someone else. We are grateful if there is a line that says "via pingnews" so that we can alert others to this free service.
