Thanks, guy - it was the best I could can make of it in a hurry, actually. There's too much 'bleed' to the right, but I wanted to make sure the tiny alley was shown to cover 2 of the editorial points.
By the way, I shot Bethnal Green Museum as you suggested, but my pic isn't any better than yours, late in the day, too dark - have got one with a different angle, though, may upload it and let you make the determination. (But I now accept that I specialise in 'Gothic' chiaroscuro, might as well run with it...)
Oh, and now I've uploaded it, I just realised that the old Old Bethnal Green Town Hall shot wasn't Old Bethnal Green Town Hall at all! It's not there any more, but I think the one we were running was actually Queen Adelaide's Dispensary (of which, in fact, I now have new shots. It has an interesting history, so may put something about it on Bethnal Green.)

Interesting. We might need a hospital category... I have been mostly in Kings Cross and Farringdon, and started Category:Channel Tunnel Rail Link as I realised that they are going to finish the bits around Kings Cross quite quickly at the current rate, and there are lots of other nice bits around there. I was about to say the same re: London Hospitals as a category. I've only about 2 hospital shots right now, but that category is definitely needed given the understanding of epidemiology and healthcare that arose from the late Victorian squalor in the East End.
Anyway, you grab the King's X stuff, and I might try and record the electricity pylons (I happen to be a big fan of lekky pylons and gasometers) they have already started removing round Hackney Wick and the Marshes - Category: Goddam 2012 goddam blooming Olympix, not covering that, sorry. Might also see what I can do at King's X, but depends when I am there.

Incidentally, Islington districts are even more screwed up than Hackney's (Islington is my No 2 borough, lived there for almost as long as Hackney.). No less than four locales are listed down the length of the Holloway Road (Upper H, Lower H, H and the Nag's Head - the last is the best piece, H is a redlink.) - but this is just silly overloading. Pentonville Prison is described as being in Pentonville! It's pretty bad. But I like the idea of simply making the head borough page a category page - solves an awful lot of probs in one go. Medicine in London or something might be better, so it is less specifically architectural. I added a John Snow memorial the other day.
I got a decent gasometer picture at KX, might upload tomorrow. Do you know the photos of en:Bernd and Hilla Becher?

And medicine covers, e.g. clinics as well as hospitals. No, I didn't know the Becher's photos, but that is just my kind of thing, judging from the one link. I will look them up more thoroughly later. Have a couple of OK gasometer shots too that I took down Haggerston the other day, will upload one later. There is a gasometer entry in the pedia (and a 'town gas' one) that needs something like that. Funny how gasometers are heritage these days, but pylons are still seen as eyesores. All that cancer from the high-voltage lines, I guess ;)

Libeskind at Holloway[edit]

Re: Holloway. I took a few shots down there last week, but didn't even go as far as the Nag's Head, so not sure which building you mean? Have a reasonable pic of North London Uni, though. Holloway, I meant Image:London-Met-01.jpg (crap picture looks like its ripped off a website, its actually the UKs only Libeskind). I cant find any pictures of it, so I guess I last walked past before I had the camera and just put them in my head. I might do a Holloway Road walk, as there are no decent archway pics either (ie no actual arch). I saw the Becher's show at the Pompidou in January, having seen some pictures at some show at the Tate Modern before (they were much the most interesting). Have one of their books, would have mroe if they werent so expensive. There are lots of intersting things, like the way they pretend they are natural but are clearly manipulated to look more bland (no sky). I really like them. Link didn't work, but found this: Libeskind on Holloway Road I was really close when I took the London Met Uni pix (Keep calling it North London Uni, at least I'm not calling it North London Poly), so missed a bet. That's kind of a must as an image - that is not an area normally noted for its architectural excellence, after all. Funny about the Becher's sky thing - I've come to a similar conclusion - prefer the shots with bland or 'white sky' myself, in spite of photoshopping in a sky on your Finsbury town hall pic. But have decided to leave skies as they are, except for selecting them out of the postprocessing so as to adjust the levels on the foreground subject. Oh - and Gasometers pic uploaded now. Non met water features[edit]

Phoenix well

During today's expansion of Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association (I went on a pilgrimage to find the first one on Snow Hill), I found a water feature thats much earlier and not by them. I like the fact that a house of correction is mentioned. Its amazing how many fountains there are - still have 2 and a trough to do that I know of. But each time I find more. Kentish Town has 3 fountains and a few months ago I hadnt really noticed any of them... Justinc 01:46, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That one is cool, with the odd-looking granite trough (I thought it was wood at first) and everything. (That page is starting to look like The Observer's Book of Drinking Fountains, you know). Anyway, I've been through the raw shots and have uploaded the Geffrye Museum one. Additionally, since we're talking earlier features, here is Tottenham High Cross Pump, mentioned in Pevsner. Dates from 1791, but the cute little wellhead building is only from 1876. Don't know where to place it, maybe that page needs something like 'Miscellaneous' at the end.
Two important fountains (and closely linked with East End Jewish history) are the well-known Edward VII one by the London Hospital and the one dedicated to Mocatta, the Jewish philanthropist, at St Botolph's. Will check them out next time I'm down there.
Tottenham High Cross Pump
Your Hackney one is pretty much the same design as St Johns Wood, first "standard model" so far. I found another with the same push button as Kentish Town too (still to upload). I think a seperate pump category could be in order. Justinc 18:31, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well the book finally arrived. Lots of useful info and some locations to check out. Myddleton at Islington Green is met - he turns out to be an important water history figure, probably needs an article. But not sure there is anything about your anon. WIll post more later. Oh and the common pattern was a standard design. In fact there was a catalogue that you could choose from, or commission something yourself. Book sounds good, what is title/author/ISBN? Yes, I realised Myddleton was an important figure in terms of the overall growth of London as a whole, was thinking of expanding New River piece, but he certainly deserves an article, agreed. Think I'll create a London water infrastructure cat over here, as you've done on WP, as a catch-all. Have some New River pix to add to that too. Details at en article - just expanding article (suspect not easiest book to obtain - got it from an architecture bookshop in Lancashire). It says that there is the original "Devil's conduit" from Lambs Conduit Street moved behind the Met Water Board building in Rosebery avenue - might be worth a look. Ta for book stuff, will look. Anyway, the terrapins are in the Clissold lakes not the New River, there're just waterfowl almost literally walking across the New River algae. But another enigma here - the lakes are said to be a survival of the Hackney Brook, with its source in Holloway so it runs at right angles to the New River, and the Brook traditionally emptied into the Lea somewhere south of Homerton (bridges on Mare St and Homerton High St, AFAIK). As far as I can make out, the Hackney Brook disappeared into Bazalgette's Northern Outfall one day and has never been seen since (truly - the river vanished, and no-one noticed?). I don't understand quite how it crossed the New River before then, and how the Clissold Ponds are supplied now (their water is quite fresh, not at all hypertrophic).

Stardom at last. Becky, my friend who lives in Sevill House, will love that one - must try and get that pic into the 'pedia. Yeah, good shots. Mine are mostly same angles, not quite as good, but I think I have a few that are different. Was waiting for yours to go up. West[edit]

Fine set of fountains from out west. I tried to find the end of the New River. It was getting dark. There is a big sign saying "London Water Ring Main New River Head" also somewhere there might be older stuff but behind doors locked at night. Justinc 01:49, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's another sign down there round the back pointing to a continuation of New River Walk, but I couldn't find the way to it last time I was down there. Yeah, the embankment is a target-rich environment down west, but that's true of Thames-side in general, I guess. Just put up some more stuff including Bazalgette's pumping station. Oh, that Novus fountain you recategorised is in fact in Pimlico, not Chelsea, I just realised. Got muddled because the estate agents have been hard at work reclassifying whole chunks of the Pimlico embankment as being in Chelsea - as you can see from the poster in the pumping house shot, though admittedly that is only about 100 metres from the borough border. Wow. I would be cool with time-saving features - I will get there some time soon. Right now processing protest stuff about Broadway Market on the Hackney Town Hall steps. Don't get political very often these days, but Broadway Market close to home... Unfortunately the Respect (why don't they just call themselves S.P.E.C.T.R.E.?) agents turned up and ruined everyone's day. Hey, later, must put shot up. 2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
