FP-categories
Hello W.carter, while closing my latest FP-nomination you wrote "category changed since "Panoramas" is not used any more, please remember that". I heard of this, but I can´t find any solid decision or clue about that and it´s intension. Do you know more? Greetings --Milseburg (talk) 12:18, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Milseburg, I must confess that I have only been told this by users who were active on Commons before me. Apparently the page became too large and too heavy to handle for browsers way back when. At first a lot of the files were copied and moved to other galleries/FP-categories but not so lately, probably because very few users keep that page on their watchlist. You will have to ask one of the users who were active in this before my time, like Christian Ferrer who copied a lot of the panoramas to other pages or A.Savin who is one of the users who knows most about FP categories. --Cart (talk) 12:48, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Therefore I had started a discussion here about 6 month ago and left a note here and here. But there was no resonance. --Milseburg (talk) 13:17, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- I know Milseburg, it is sometimes very difficult to get response about some things around here. The FP categories's are almost unwatched and on the other regular pages people often treat questions like an "SEP" (Somebody else's problem). let's see if we get some respond to my 'pings' here now, after that we can start digging though archives. --Cart (talk) 13:33, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Milseburg, I found this discussion about Panoramas and I think it answers some of your questions: Commons talk:Featured picture candidates/Archive 17#Cutoff for panoramas. --Cart (talk) 14:20, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I remember, that I found this discussion too. But as I mentioned in Commons talk:Featured pictures/Places/Panoramas it seems to me, that the result has not prevailed, since after 2015 many panoramas have been added in this category. Futher more this category is still present and listed in Commons:Featured pictures and POTY. --Milseburg (talk) 15:41, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Milseburg, that is the usual problem. ;) People can vote and comment on things, but when it comes to actually fixing the thing, there are not so many volunteers. Looking at the history, Christian was one of the very few who actually did something about this. This should be fixed, and I could do that but it would take a while. Right now, I rather busy fixing the COM:PT, another project that people want, but not so many are contributing to. Btw, POTY categories are not the same as FP cats. Those categories are selected and altered a bit each year to make the voting more user-friendly. (See POTY 2017 cats here) Even if we remove the category from FP, it will probably still be on POTY. --Cart (talk) 16:01, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hello, indeed, following the result appearing at Commons talk:Featured picture candidates/Archive 17#Cutoff for panoramas, I started to copy the images from the panorama gallery to the other more specific galleries. I confess that this job was out of my mind, and although I copied more than half I did not finish. For my part I do not really have any objection that the images being placed within the panorama gallery too, but I think it is more useful for our potential visitors to have the possibility to find the FPs by topics e.g. natural places in Germany or architecture of Russia, ect, ect... rather than scrolling through an endless and unclassified page. Christian Ferrer (talk) 16:57, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Christian and thank you for joining the discussion. Well, since the page is not working and FPC Bot is not communicating correctly with it, we really should act fully on the outcome of the old discussion. Especially since panoramas can be added to normal galleries now. Keeping it in the Template:Commons FP galleries is only confusing for users. I think it should be removed from that template and from the Commons:Featured pictures page(s) for a start. After that we could put a message on the top of Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Panoramas page that "This category is no longer active, please choose another category, for example ...". As soon as those steps are done we can copy/move all the files that are still on that page to the other categories. I can surely help you with that, perhaps Milseburg too since panoramas is his specialty. What do you think? --Cart (talk) 17:13, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Maybe indeed. We should maybe firstly copy and past this discussion to Commons talk:Featured picture candidates, and then wait 2, 3 weeks or a month to see if someone has a valid objection. Not a vote, but just a discussion. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:43, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Christian, sure! Good idea. I can post a notice there to say that we are ready to fix what the old discussion started and will do so if no one has any objections to it. Better to post links to this discussion plus the old one and all the pages involved. --Cart (talk) 17:55, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

So, Christian Ferrer, I have completed copying and moving all the rest of the files in Commons:Featured pictures/Places/Panoramas, that should be done anyway. As soon as you think it can be time to remove the links to the Panorama page and complete this, I would be very grateful if you would help me since you know more about the workings of the FP categories than I do, please. --Cart (talk) 21:43, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
- wow, great job, many thanks! wait a little ten days and I will remove the links. An another aditional thing that we can do is to create a kind of category Featured pictures of panoramas instead of this gallery. Christian Ferrer (talk) 05:42, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

A bit late to say this, but...
Thanks for being so diligent with Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Giuseppe Barberis - Carlo Cornaglia - Giuseppe Verdi's Don Carlo at La Scala.jpg and Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Alexandre Lacauchie - Gilbert Duprez as Gaston in Verdi's Jérusalem.jpg. Both have now passed legitimately after renomination, and while it might be annoying to have to repeat the nomination, it is definitely the best thing for the project to handle it as you did.
I'm afraid I'm only a week and a bit back from wikibreak, hence the late response. Again, thank you. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:20, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for your kind comment, Adam. :) Yes, it was a sad and messy business and I'm very glad your noms have now passed fair and square. --Cart (talk) 14:28, 6 December 2018 (UTC)
Hello Cart, I'm so sorry my note about the moon being copied in hit you so hard. I had just meant that you made several shots of the scene and then perhaps from these then the best moon would have used. That is in my eyes still a permitted treatment since nothing was composed in addition. I wanted to praise this possibly successful work actually indirectly. In the evening I first noticed the dilemma and tried to make the best of a bad job but I'm not sure if it worked out well. Sorry if that went off in a completely different direction. Best regards from --Ermell (talk) 22:43, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
- Ok Ermell, your apology is accepted. You spoke before thinking, that happens to all of us now and then. I don't mind normal factual 'opposes', those have taught me more about photography than any 'support' has. I'm just weary of things said, sometimes without thinking properly, that cast a shadow of doubt over a person's character. Even when sorted out, they leave you drained afterwards. This was just the latest/last of such incidents and piled up they have taken away the joy of competing at FPC for me. However, I will continue to work on Commons and upload my photos so that they may be used in articles. That is the main reason for my being here. --Cart (talk) 23:04, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

- See cart - we really do need you and your input on FPC! –Martin Falbisoner (talk) 08:46, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for this very unexpected Christmas gift and Merry Christmas to you too Martin! Those jackets photos were only test shots I did to figure out how to make a cool image involving the jacket. I wanted to see how that light and post-processing worked on the leather. I uploaded then since I didn't want them to "go to waste", but I never intended them for FPC. I'm sorry, but my heart is just not in the FP game now. If I get hold of a "real" camera, stop doing experimental photos and have a sex change, I might once again fit in with "the rest of the guys" some day. Just kidding. In the meanwhile I'll just go through the thousands of average nice photos I took as I documented much of the Lysekil peninsula this summer and upload selected ones. The only good thing about the 2018 drought, was that every day was a photo day. Be well and all my best wishes to you and your family. --Cart (talk) 11:00, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
- Please do whatever feels right for you, Cart! But if you ever consider paying us a visit over at FPC, please don't hesitate - there's a couple of "us guys" who will be truly missing your experimental perspective. And yes, I do understand that FPC can be annoying at times. All the best to you and yours as well! :-) --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 17:31, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

Coordinates
I've been thinking, does coordinates matter for Quality images? Adamdaley 10:31, 8 January 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamdaley (talk • contribs) 10:31, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Adamdaley: Coordinates are not a must for QIs, but they are appreciated and in some cases they can help the overall assessment. Like if you take a photo of a rare plant in the middle of nowhere, it is useful to biologists to know the exact position of the habitat, but if you photograph the Tower Bridge in London, it is easy to figure out where the photo is taken so coordinates are less important. If you photograph an iPhone, coordinates are almost useless since it is just a photo of a common object. --Cart (talk) 10:45, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- For example headstones of graves in a cemetery in my area which is the largest. Adamdaley 10:49, 8 January 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamdaley (talk • contribs) 10:49, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Adamdaley: For that coordinates are not necessary for QI if you give the name of the cemetery, town/city, state, country. Some cemeteries have plot and section numbers that can be useful. But keep in mind that we don't post photos here just to make them QI, VI or FP, they are for the free Wiki-project and coordinates can be very useful to researchers and projects. I add coordinates to almost all my photos simply because we do not know how they may be used and what info might be relevant. --Cart (talk) 11:44, 8 January 2019 (UTC)

Your fridge photo found a use
It was added as the lead image to the recently created enwiki article Crisper drawer. Yoninah was perhaps inspired to take a closer picture of her own, fruit-filled Israeli crisper drawer for the article ... she reviews a lot of my DYK nominations; I shall have to congratulate her as well since she doesn't take many pictures.
So, proof that just because there's no obvious use for a Commons FP when it gets approved doesn't mean there never will be. Daniel Case (talk) 05:33, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Daniel, thanks for letting me know. I'm very glad it inspired Yoninah to make a photo of their own. :) I've seen that name many times at DYK when I bothered to make DYKs of my articles. The fridge photo is used on some other WPs to illustrate fridges, but it has also found its way to Wiktionary. The most unlikely place is to illustrate the German adverb auf. Even my most obscure photos have been used around the Wiki projects. It really shows that you never know where your photo may be useful; if we just create them, people will use them in ingenious ways.
- In a related case you never know when your photo will turn out to be useful. A while back I got into a discussion about old dyeing techniques, which led to a visit to the Orcein article. Seeing that it had no proper photo, I remembered that way back when I did some plant dyeing, I must have taken a photo of something. So rifling through my old film photos, I found a nice one of orcein (lichen dyed) yarn. :) I scanned it, and could place it in a couple of more articles. Little did I suspect where this was going to end up when I shot it! Sadly, I don't have a film scanner so I had to fix up a scan of the paper copy. I asked at the local camera store here, but when the owner didn't understand what I meant when I asked if they scanned in jpeg or tiff, I dropped the subject. --Cart (talk) 10:52, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry for my delayed response. Yes, I did mean to say that it was the first time that image has been used on the English Wikipedia—it looks like it's gotten into a couple of other language wikis "refrigerator" articles.
- My personal favorite for how someone has found a use (at least a proposed one) for an image that I never expected someone to find one for is File:Chinese couple taking selfie in Beihai Park, Beijing.jpg. Not good, but I think people taking couple selfies make interesting subjects, so I've gotten some from around the world that I will perhaps have to compile a coffee-table book, Couples and Groups Taking Selfies at UNESCO World Heritage Sites, or maybe just World Heritage Selfies. That last one has apparently made a joke Wikivoyage page.
- In this case, someone thought it would be the perfect illustration for an article they started drafting on "Learning technologies". I would never have thought of it. Daniel Case (talk) 06:35, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
Charles Arbuthnot Crombie
I'm here to ask you if my image can be saved from perspective warp. I am unable to fix it due my hands that I cannot do it. I've left a comment if it can be fixed but no one has replied. The file name is: Charles Arbuthnot Crombie, Sandgate Cemetery.jpg ... Adamdaley 21:23, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Adamdaley. Ok, I'll fix this one for you, but it will have to wait until tomorrow evening after I get home from work. Right now I'm just too tired. However, I do think you can correct these things yourself. If I remember correctly, you have Lightroom and you are able to click on buttons and enter numbers for the sliders in that program, you know the way you get rid of CA for example. Well, you can do it the same way with rotations and perspective corrections. Here is a very good video describing how you can use these functions with just such controls: Tutorial. Towards the end of the video, when she uses the slider to correct the perspective, you can see how the numbers change on that line. You can of course do this in reverse and change the numbers to move the slider. Almost anything in Lightroom can be done by writing numbers and see what happens. --Cart (talk) 22:06, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
- Adamdaley, I'm glad you figured out how to use the buttons in Lightroom to correct the perspective. Truth is, you can do it in a similar way with many of the functions in Photoshop too. When you click on an "Edit" function, you usually get an extra tool bar full of boxes with height, width, angles, numbers and so on. For most users this will just tell them what edits they have done to the photo by tweaking and moving it around, but you can "reverse" this too by entering the numbers and see how the photo changes. I use this option all the time when I want to make very small adjustment, like perhaps tilting a photo 0,05 degrees. Corrections that are hard to do by hand for anyone. Just play around with the numbers and see how the photo changes. If you get stuck, just do a search on YouTube for a tutorial for that specific problem. There are millions of short videos dealing with anything you can come across in Photoshop and Lightroom.
- On QIC, I changed your nomination to "Discuss". You have to do that if you disagree with the reviewer or the photo will be automatically declined. --Cart (talk) 12:52, 18 January 2019 (UTC)
- I don't think it'll pass QI. How about after QI, I try it at VI? -- Adamdaley
- Adamdaley, You can try it if you want to. I'm not active on VI since I find it a rather strange section, hard to understand. Remember that all photos do not have to have some kind of assessment, just enjoy taking and sharing them. --Cart (talk) 09:39, 22 January 2019 (UTC)
- Did you use the flash from your camera or buy a better flash? -- Adamdaley
- Adamdaley, I used the built-in flash from the camera, it is usually enough. In the case of the photo of the tree, I used the setting called "Slow sync." since the rest of the wood was rather dark. In my camera manual it is described as: "When taking pictures against a dark background landscape, this feature will slow the shutter speed when the flash is activated. Dark background landscape will appear brighter." I think other cameras and flashes have similar functions. When I use the flash, I usually take a few versions of the photo with different settings, since it can be tricky to know in advance how the photo will turn out. You have to experiment a bit. I don't own an extra flash. --Cart (talk) 08:03, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
Very sorry to read ...
... this. I always look forward to your nominations, even on the occasions where I've decided not to support them. Someday I hope you'll reconsider. Daniel Case (talk) 18:11, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you so very much, that is so kind of you. It takes a bit of effort and stamina to nominate things that goes against the usual alps/churches/butterflies/etc. which have free pass at FPC, not because of the opposes but due to the snide remarks and unrelated strange comments you get when testing new things. They are tiresome. At the moment my life is a bit upside down, so I need to focus on that instead of doing battle for my photos. For some strange reason, it is not as taxing to stand up and defend other users. That just comes natural. Let's hope that when I have sorted things out, I will have the extra energy to hit FPC with some new "scandalous" nominations. Until then, I also have a huge backlog of nice but more ordinary photos to process and upload. You may have noticed some of them on Flickr.
- I love that, just like me, you think of the posts we make here on the wiki-projects more like verbal conversations (hear–your first reaction) rather than written (read). Guess that really makes us part of the internet generation even if we came into it late in life.
- I'm hoping I will be able to get to Stockholm in August since I've never been to a Wiki event. --Cart (talk) 18:50, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

- I grew up in Stockholm so I know the city like the back of my hand. :-) If you need some tips or info about anything there, please don't hesitate to ask. That goes for any other readers too. --Cart (talk) 22:16, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- I will almost definitely be taking you up on that. Still not 100% sure I'm going, but trying. Want to lead a photo expedition? :) — Rhododendrites talk | 17:25, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Rhod: And I'm not 100% sure I can go there (time off from work, money) but I would really like to. If so, of course I could be a photo guide in some capacity. You might have to put a gag rule on me though since I love the city so much and know it too well. --Cart (talk) 17:32, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

- +1 to Daniel Case! And just a remark that I totally understand what Cart said about the mental energy. It takes quite some effort to me to nominate an alp image. I can barely imagine to take a picture of my old jacket and send it to FPC :)
- In general, I think we're missing here some kind of social support. Let's say most of localized Wikipedias (like Swedish or Czech Wikipedia) have local clubs / Wikipedia branches / conferences where you can meet some folks and exchange ideas or get a motivation to work. You don't have to do it often, just once in a while. Like going to a yoga festival once a year, where you make sure that you're not the only crazy person in the world trying every evening to do a hand stand, instead of going to get a few beers into a local pub like most of your neighbors. Other sites - like, let's say, Flickr - have well designed tools for social interaction and I think users feel more accepted there. I feel like on MediaWiki based projects, everything that you write looks more serious than it actually is. In general, it makes most of our interaction here look quite formal. And maybe that's why it often requires more energy to interact with other users.
- Anyway, sorry for my rumbles, good day to both :) --Podzemnik (talk) 12:59, 10 March 2019 (UTC)
Good evening Mrs. Carter,
Thank you very much for the English description with my photo File:Langweerderwielen (Langwarder Wielen). (d.j.b.) 18.jpg.
Note. We miss your special photos at FP. Yours faithfully,--Famberhorst (talk) 17:00, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Famberhorst, I'm always happy to do translations, just let me know when/if you need any for your photos, they are always a joy to see. For some strange reason , I can understand some Netherlands, probably because it is close Swedish and German. :-) We will see when or if I start nominating my photos again. For now I have a lot of other things to take care of in my life, so I'm very happy only doing some maintenance work and the occasional voting. All the best, --Cart (talk) 17:15, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
Apology
Thank you for properly closing my FP nomination at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Kinvara - Dunguaire Castle - 20180706210924.jpg and my apologies for not following protocol in withdrawing it. I had not tried for a FP since 2008 (and then only on the English Wikipedia) and, although I have two Quality Images here on Commons (from 2010), I am pretty sure this was my first Commons nomination for FP. When the photo in question placed in the top ten in Ireland for Wiki Loves Monuments 2018, I thought my unbroken string of unsuccessful FP attempts (mostly on EN) might be over. When it was clear it was not up to the FP standards, I just wanted it off the nomination page. I'll try again next decade. ;-) Thanks and sorry again, Ruhrfisch (talk) 02:07, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- No problem Ruhrfisch, mistakes is how we learn. :-) You might be more successful with your photos if you used some kind of post-processing program like Photoshop or Lightroom. These days, it is often what is required to make the most of your photo, since you can bring up shadows, tone down highlights, do perspective correction, etc. Have a look at COM:PT for tips on how to improve your photos. You are always welcome to my page if you have any questions. If you want some opinions about your photos before nominating them on QIC or FPC, you can ask at Commons:Photography critiques. See you around! --Cart (talk) 10:24, 23 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for your kind words and sorry to be a bit whiny above. I take handheld photos (no tripod) without a lot of time to set up or prepare (I am usually playing tourist with my family at the same time), so while my photos are usually decent, I understand why they do not rise to FP quality levels. That said, I will look carefully through my pictures and see if there are a few to get feedback on (the English Wikipedia used to have a Photo Peer Review that was helpful). Take care and thanks again, Ruhrfisch (talk) 17:43, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
- Don't sell yourself short for the way you take photos! Many of the FPs are done just that way. I don't even have such a fancy camera as you have and some of my FPs are snaps I took handheld on my way to or from work with a small pocket camera, like these: 1, 2, 3, 4 and several others. :-) Your camera is capable of taking photos in raw format, I think you should use that. You will be amazed how much that format can do for your photos! Just take a look at how that works and you might be our newest addition to the FPC team. To illustrate what I mean, I took your castle photo and edited it a bit in Lightroom. This is the result, and that was just using the jpeg file, imagine what it could have been like with the raw file... ;-) --Cart (talk) 18:20, 24 March 2019 (UTC)
stats
Hey Cart, maybe you can help me here. There used to be handy little tool on commons that you could use to generate figures regarding the global usage of files and categories. Example: How many times do wikis use files of the category Featured Pictures, sorted by files etc. I know that tool must be there, somewhere. I just can't find it. ;-) Many thanks, --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 08:01, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Martin Falbisoner, It's not something I recall having seen or used. There are a bunch of links to different tools where you can enter all sorts of parameters listed on the page Commons:Statistics; "Statistics pages" and futher down "Resources". Might it be one of those? --Cart (talk) 09:32, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- The answer was GLAMorous. Really useful. When it works ;-) --Martin Falbisoner (talk) 13:07, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Glad you found it and thanks for letting me know about it. Cheers, --Cart (talk) 13:14, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

- (talk page stalker) @Martin Falbisoner: There's also the other version of GLAMorous, which can be a little easier to use for some purposes. Then there's GLAMorgan. GLAMorous gives some additional details, but I've found that it sometimes returns incorrect stats (for example, lots of zero values). Not sure why, but GLAMorgan seems more accurate for overall numbers. Of course, they all seem to be down right now. :) — Rhododendrites talk | 15:51, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

FI - nomination - Humayun's tomb
Is it's not okay ? what should I do ? Thanks EATCHA (talk) 12:52, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- Both are cropped from the original, the QI - promoter did not liked the full version as it's slightly tilted EATCHA (talk) 12:58, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- EATCHA, I am at work now, I will look at this better and come with suggestions later tonight when I'm free and home again. --Cart (talk) 13:01, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- EATCHA, I have had a closer look at the photo now. A lot of small things needed to be corrected and unfortunately those require that you have a good editing program. I have used both Lightroom and Photoshop. Like another user wrote on the nomination, the first thing you need to do is adjust the perspective. With this building it is a bit tricky since the outer building and the central one have different pespectives, so I went for correcting the outer leaving the inner just slightly tapering, doing more would look silly. The photo also have the same problem as many photos from India: It is a bit hazy and the light gets dispersed, causing everything to look light and washed our. I have not touched the satureation, but I have removed some of the haze and that brings out the colors. Next step was adding a bit of darkness in the photo to give it some depth. I also balanced the colors of the shadows and the sunlit areas by reducing the blue in the shadows a bit and cooling of the yellow sunlight slightly. The was also a lot of purple chromatic aberration to get rid of. I added some smart sharpening and a very little noise reduction. I cloned out the leaves and the water tap in the lawn and cropped it. This is a the first uncropped version in my Dropbox, and this is the cropped version. I hope you can see some of the things I mentioned above and compare them with your version. You are welcome to download and use these edits any way you like. If you start using raw format and train a bit with a good editing program, your photos will get much better. --Cart (talk) 19:52, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the editing, I could not have edited it like you did. I uploaded your cropped version. I actually have Photoshop but I am a Novice, and I will purchase the Lightroom maybe in next 2-3 days, but I think it will take me around a month or more to be able to edit like you did. I got the advice to shoot in raw from an editor in one of my QI nomination, from now I'll be shooting in cr2 format. Why the haziness and dispersion problem you talked about occurs in India (mainly in cities), I also noticed it many times. Is it due to pollution levels in the Indian Cities (Levels sometimes cross the maximum limit the machine can measure ) or is it anything else ? Thanks again EATCHA (talk) 20:51, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
- EATCHA, no problem, I'm glad you liked it. Mostly the thing beginners do wrong with Photoshop, is to pull the toggles too much and use the wrong ones. :-) Just be gentle and test a lot and you will learn fast. There are many, many good tutorials in YouTube so if there are things you wonder about, just search there. I think the haziness in India is part bad pollution and part the hot and sometimes humid weather. Heat can also cause heat haze to make things worse and in the countryside I guess most people cook over open fires, adding to the haze. Thankfully, Lightroom has a tool just for that. Good luck now! :-) --Cart (talk) 21:23, 1 April 2019 (UTC)

Artistic photos
Today I got another reminder that the sometimes frowned-upon artistic photos really do have a place on this project for free images. This one came to good use. --Cart (talk) 08:26, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

You wrote "I want to support this, but I'm still waiting for a good version of it" and today supported the nom. But the alternative JPG hasn't changed. It is still the one where Habitator terrae editing the RGB levels to taste manually in GIMP. Yann wrote "You can upload a separate file, and I will eventually replace the alternative." but I'm not clear what he intends to do with the nomination. Btw, the gigapixel version of the file I uploaded now has a working zoom viewer. -- Colin (talk) 09:35, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, I messed up. Have left a note at the nom and will keep an eye on things there. --Cart (talk) 09:49, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

- @Eatcha: Looks like a nice start. I think it would be even better if you didn't use all bold characters, and skip the x-large, since that might be viewed as "shouting", plus finish off with a welcome and your signature to make it more personal. I have altered the above test and corrected the language a bit. Small piece of advice: I could also say that you and your efforts would be taken more seriously if your signature wasn't so flashy, people might think you are too young to make these projects work. It's all about making a good first impression. --Cart (talk) 20:31, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

- No problem! You are always welcome here. Now it looks as if you are about to do some serious business. (I also had a flashier signature at first.) --Cart (talk) 20:43, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Hello Mrs. Carter,
I have a question, maybe you know what to do.Suddenly I can no longer upload photos to Wikimedia. Everything is going well, until the moment is asked: publishing. Then I get the error message: An error occurred while opening the file for the ZIP check. Can there be a malfunction at Wikimedia? Sincerely,--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 17:24, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- Hello Agnes Monkelbaan, sometimes in the evenings I too can get very strange messages when I upload photos because there are so many other users doing the same thing and the servers get overloaded. You can try again a bit later or use another web browser. I alternate between Explorer and Chrome. I will see if I have an image that I can try to upload and see if I get the same message as you. DO you use the "Upload Wizard" (The page you get when you click on the link in the left column on Commons) or do you use some other way? All the best, --Cart (talk) 17:33, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- I have tried explorer and chrome. and have been busy for hours. I'm not going to succeed! Agnes.
- Hello, I just had the same message and I did not managed to upload my file. I don't know from where that comes from. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:36, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Agnes Monkelbaan and Christian Ferrer: I just tested to upload and I managed to upload File:Sivik recycling station in Lysekil.jpg using the Upload Wizard. It is just a small mobile phone file, so maybe it slipped through. BUT I got a very strange thing: I got one image but two sets of data to fill in! I only filled in the one with the actual photo, and it worked. This all might have something to do with the Commons:Structured data/Development they are trying to get working. I haven't had time to read what it's all about, but I saw a discussion about it at QIC talk. There are a lot of new things they want us to fill in when we upload files and it might be clogging the system with bugs now at the beginning. --Cart (talk) 17:49, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- I just tested uploading a new version of a big file (File:Cherry tree moving in the wind 1.jpg). Everything went well. In both tests I used Explorer. --Cart (talk) 17:59, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @MB-one: You seem to know something about Structured data. Is this what is causing these malfunctions? --Cart (talk) 17:52, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

- @Agnes Monkelbaan and Christian Ferrer: Ok, something is definitely off in the system. I did a quick processing of a file and tried to upload it first using Chrome and then Explorer plus Upload Wizard. Both times I got the same strange message you got. A ZIP file is usually used when you upload a lot of data, so just to test things, I tried to upload the same file, but just the plain out-off-camera version and that worked with Explorer (File:Pine with some snow in Brastad.jpg). My guess is that the additional info stored on the file from the post-processing program is doing some strange things with the system right now. I think it's best to wait a while, probably until tomorrow and see if this gets fixed. I will keep an eye on the technical pages and see what's going on. Hopefully I will have some answers for you later. --Cart (talk) 18:24, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- I'm afraid my technical knowledge is too limited to help here. --MB-one (talk) 18:26, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Agnes Monkelbaan, Christian Ferrer, and MB-one: I have posted a question at Commons:Village pump/Technical#Upload malfunctioning. --Cart (talk) 18:30, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Agnes Monkelbaan, Christian Ferrer, and MB-one: This is weird... I tested if I could upload the processed files, the one that I got the strange message about, over the out-of-camera photo I managed to upload. That worked! So it seems you can upload photos if you start with uploading the unprocessed file and then add the processed version on top of it. Not exactly optimal though... --Cart (talk) 18:39, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
- Good morning everyone, I am going to wait a few days to upload my new photos. I have been busy for many hours and have tried everything. There you will be stressed on. Maybe Wikimedia will solve the problem soon. Thanks for all the responses. Greetings--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 04:50, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Agnes Monkelbaan: You can always try an alternative way to upload images. Recently, I've been having some issues with Upload Wizzard too, but Commonist works just fine. --Podzemnik (talk) 04:53, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Prettig weekeind toegewenst,--Agnes Monkelbaan (talk) 15:57, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
Prettig weekend jullie allebei, --Cart (talk) 16:21, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
